Insightful comments, thanks girls!
Lynn, it's a great point that there are other mountains to climb - being transgendered is not the ultimate goal in life, but who you are as you live the life that you were born to live.

Zosimus, it's so true that the more you accept yourself the more others accept you. The irony of life is that the more you need other's acceptance the less they'll give it to you. I loved your breakdown of four key attributes to have!

I think you summed it up nicely Brandy with "get a life" :)

Yea, I agree. Get a life. What a person wears is not that big of a deal. It doesn't change your intrinsic nature.
I dress in various outfits throughout the day depending on the task at hand. Wearing a nice outfit to work if I am doing something involving grunge just does not make sense.
Is that a man dressing as a woman?
Maybe it's a person with a male body choosing clothing to wear, clothing I like, clothing that feels good, clothing that supports what I am trying to get done.

And halloween is going to be fun!

I'd have to say that I've been very lucky in that I've always accepted my transgender tendencies. I remember even as a child feeling somewhat "girly", and while I sometimes thought that was a bit odd, I can't say it ever really bothered me. As a result, I've always been very open about this side of me, and I'd have to say that this has yielded positive results far more often than not. The more you like and accept yourself, I've found, the more likely other people are to do the same, which in turn tends to make you even more comfortable in your own skin.

To generalize a bit, I often think that if you engage in any kind of behaviour that society considers "deviant" (not just cross-dressing), there are four qualities you can have that'll greatly reduce your chances of being ostracized.
1) Strength - obviously. Just don't give a shit what other people think of you. (Isn't it funny how people are much more likely to like those who don't try too hard to be liked?)
2) Intelligence - since people tend to respect the smart (if begrudgingly at times). The more intelligence and wisdom you have, too, the less likely you'll be to do stupid things that'll only reinforce other people's negative views about people like you.
3) Charm - since nothing seems to drive people crazier than wanting to hate someone but being unable to because they're just too damn likable!
4) Talent - be really good at at least one thing that other people appreciate (since they'll be more likely to, at the very least, tolerate having you around). This ties in with what you said about being able to make a meaningful contribution to family and society. (It's probably also why so many geniuses get away with being such utter weirdos!)

I think some of it comes from what you as a person want out of life. If you're happy to dress at home (in secret or otherwise), that's fine. Likewise, you may enjoy the 'part time' going out or even want to live full time. All of these are fine because it's about your personal wellbeing. What's right for you may not be right for me and vice versa. Do what you need to to stay level headed.

There will be some hard choices along the way and I won't lie to you saying it'll be easy.... It's like a long hard slog up a mountain. Sometimes you'll go up, sometimes down and maybe even rest at a point for a time. Maybe, you'll give up. There's nothing wrong with that. Maybe you'll reach the top and get to enjoy the view. If you do, don't forget to offer a little help if anyone's struggling.

Now you're at the top: what now? Sit there and crow about it, or get back down and get on with living? There are other mountains to climb you know. ;-D
