I have been a long time time fan of the Killers and their lead singer Brandon Flowers. Before I admitted to myself that I was a cd, I loved songs like mr brightside and somebody told me, but as life has gone on I feel many of the lyrics may be written for folks like us. Some of their songs bend gender roles like “crossfire”,this features Charlize Theron as the heroine attempting to save the helpless lead singer, others are just for fun like” shot at the night”. Whenever I hear this song I feel like Cinderella, waiting for my turn to be the belle of the ball. Lol, I’m sure we all have been there. Another is “The Man” which is all false bravado but reminds me of the way I’ve been over compensating my whole life to be more manly. There are too many songs to mention that make me think about my own situation. Please take a minute to look up this band, the killers and Brandon flowers, because any band that can make you think about your own identity while still rocking is worth a listen. What music artists do you love? And why?

I've known of the Killers for years and am somewhat familiar with their music.  I don't consider them overlooked.  They're indie faves and in regular rotation on many indie radio stations.  That said, they are deserving of a wider audience.

It would be impossible for me to list all the artists I love. I listen to a ton of indie, alt, post-punk, EDM, electronica, house.  Also a smattering of hip-hop, alt country, jazz, blues.  If it's good I'll give it a spin.

Off the top of my head.....Idles, Fontaines DC, Debbie Friday, Arlo Parks, Dry Cleaning, Bully, Soccer Mommy, Swervedriver, Ride, My Morning Jacket, Lizzo, Bartees Strange, Japanese Breakfast, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Foals, Ministry, Cracker, Hot Chip, Bjork, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Tennis, Revolting Cocks, Built To Spill, Odesza, Wet Leg, Gang of Four, Dehd, Yves Tumor, Horsegirl, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Khruangbin, The National, Gorillaz, M83, Deerhunter, New Pornographers, Chemical Brothers....that's just scratching the surface....stuff I've listened to in the last few months.

@emilyalt That's quite a list of bands. Heard of 3 of them. Even heard a Bjork song once, I think. 🥴

@harriette I've followed the Indie music scene since I got out of radio years ago.  Heard literally thousands of artists.  The stuff you hear on commercial radio isn't even 1% of what's being released every year.

Bjork has been around since the '80s when she fronted The Sugarcubes.  Still has an amazingly powerful voice.

@emilyalt Lots of good ones in that list Emily.   I'd add Death Cab for Cutie, San Fermin, Tamaryn, Warpaint, Hozier, Washed Out, Tame Impala, Your Smith, Cuco, Local Natives, Future Islands, Father John Misty, Jealous of the Birds, Bakar, Phoenix, and Mazzy Star.

My all time anthem though is Expectations by Katie Pruitt.

@lauren114 Good list but I’ve gotta say, I’m kind of surprised no one mentioned arcade fire, muse, modest mouse or the shins. Maybe those are a bit too main stream for this conversation. Oh btw if you want to hear music that will haunt you in a good way? Take a listen to Lord Huron’s “ends of the earth” or “the night we met”. Really good stuff imo

Have you ever noticed that the refrain of Mr. Brightside sounds like rapid mourning dove cooing? I have that one and All These Things That I’ve Done favorited on Spotify.

I like My Morning Jacket. I first heard them covering Long As I Can See the Light on an episode of Bosch.

The one group I would recommend here is Steeleye Span, traditional music of the British Isles on electric instruments. Great vocals and harmonies.

@emilyalt

Having read the rest of the bands that you named in this now ageing (but happily resurrected) thread, I did NOT expect Steeleye Span to make it onto your list! I only have the 'Best Of ...' album.

Out of the others you mentioned I have three albums by Bjork ('Debut' favourite album, 'Venus as a Boy' favourite track) and a couple by Gorillaz but that's it. I haven't even heard of most of the rest 🙁

On my own shelves there are lots of albums by Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, Florence and the Machine, REM, Bon Iver, The Cranberries, Indigo Girls, KD Lang, Gerry Rafferty, Edie Brickel, Peter Gabriel and a whole heap of acoustic guitarists. I like a good poetic lyric, and most of these are also good background music to paint to 🙂

Not everything I listen to is quite so middle of the road. I once spent a couple of hours pogoing to Half Man, Half Biscuit when they did a gig at a club in Aberdeen.

Ellie x

I've never been to Red Rocks.  Envy!  Would love to see Khruangbin live.

Glad you found that list helpful.  Like I said, that's just scratching the surface.  The number of artists I love is in the hundreds at least.  Much of that knowledge goes back decades to my college radio and concert promotion days.  About 15 years ago I discovered a radio station that's profoundly expanded my taste in music - KEXP.  They're in Seattle and stream at kexp.org.  TBH, I think it's the best damn radio station on the planet.  I promise you you'll hear music you've never heard before.

@emilyalt   In New York, WFUV is an excellent, non-commercial(!) radio station.  They stream online and through an app.  It has a tremendous influence on my music taste.

That’s certainly quite a list Emily and while I admit to not being familiar with all of them, I really enjoy the new pornographers. I never heard their music until the album white out conditions came out. After hearing “high ticket attractions” i was intrigued enough to check them out and I’m glad I did. Such a cool group.

New Pornographers have been around since the late 90's.  They have a bunch of albums worth checking out.  Their singer, Neko Case, is a versatile powerhouse that pulls from a variety of musical styles, especially country and folk music.

Make Red Rocks happen.  By far the best venue Ive ever been in.

I know what you mean.  I no longer have a list of bands  I have  a 55gallon barrel.   Thats cool you got to be in the music business a bit and not be jaded too much hopefully.

Absolutely agree KEXP is one of the bests.  I think I saw the IDLES on there for the first time.  Im lucky Pittsburgh has a few good channels.  To return the new band favor check out The Warning.  Jumped into my barrel this past year.

@erikabell Working in college/non-commercial radio is way better.  No advertisers or corporate types to answer to.  Play whatever you want.  Up and coming artists love you.  I miss the work TBH.

I have seen the Killers live twice. I admit I did not catch onto the music until the band was already famous. I never paid much attention to the lyrics, but now I will.
I live in New York City and for the longest time I was hoping that I would meet a crossdresser with whom to attend rock concerts. I have a GG girlfriend now, and we go out together all the time, so reluctantly I have put on ice the desire to rock out with a CD.

Little Feat and the Kinks are two under-rated, under-played older bands.
