I’m watching 2001 space Odessy about Hal the computer that goes berserk on a mission. What is your favorite sci-fi flick?  Aliens, Forbidden Planet., encounters of the third kind, Signs, Terminator, Star Wars, Starship Troopers, a geek could go crazy in this.  Just trying to have a little fun girls. @kerrismith

I've moved this from 'Crossdresser Heaven Polls' (since it doesn't contain a poll) to 'All the Arts - Music, Movies, TV and more' (because it's about films).

Bonus points to anyone who keeps things super-relevant and on point by mentioning a sci-fi film featuring crossdressers 🙂

Nice! Bonus point awarded.

I can't find a suitable emoji so you'll have to make do with this alien.

I've thought about it.

Yes, that counts.

Here's your bonus alien: 👽

Sci-fi is my favorite genre of all. I'm a Star Trek fan for sure. Enterprise was my favorite spin off series and favorite Star Trek movie was The Voyage Home. I liked Star Wars but I was always more drawn to Star Trek. I personally think Disney ruined Star Wars.  However my all time favorite sci-fi movie is 2001 A Space Odyssey followed closely by The Martian.

@mkat3874 I am a Star Trek fan too. Enterprise got rated as worse of spinoff series, but I liked it and think it is better.   than deep Soace  Nine or Discovery

Same here. I tried to like Discovery but just couldn't get into it. I liked Deep Space Nine somewhat but it wasn't on the top of my list. I did enjoy Brave New Worlds.  I hope they continue it.

As for Enterprise I think I enjoyed it because it was a little less polished than the rest. It required more of the audience to fill in the gap in their imagination in a similar manner to theater. It also weeded out the less than devoted Trek fans.

In my youth, I was into sci-fi big time. But through the quaint medium of the written word, aka books.

If I'm permitted to just talk about novels, I'll take Ellie's bonus points and raise her by putting it back in the kitty.

"The left hand of darkness" is by an author called Ursula Le Guin. This very brief intro to the plot is from wiki.

The novel follows the story of Genly Ai, a human native who is sent to the planet of Gethen as an envoy of the Ekumen, a loose confederation of planets. Ai's mission is to persuade the nations of Gethen to join the Ekumen, but he is stymied by a lack of understanding of their culture. Individuals on Gethen are ambisexual, with no fixed sex; this has a strong influence on the culture of the planet, and creates a barrier of understanding  for Ai.

Be warned. I've not offered you a sandwich to eat here. More like a five course feast of unfamiliar food.

I, too, cut my teeth on science fiction in book form... I am currently re-reading, for the umpteenth time,  Robert Heinlein's "Number of the Beast" from 1980 and happened to read this earlier today:
"Just a side remark to my husband, Dora. What are New-Rome high styles today?"
"'Today' I must construe as meaning the latest I have in stock. Styles follow the stock market. In evening dress, men are wearing their skirts floor length ith a slight train. Bodices are off one or both shoulders. Bare feet or sandals are acceptable. Colors are bright and may be mixed in discordants. Weapons are required - may be symbolic butmust be displayed. Ladies, of course, follow the cycle out of phase. Skirts are hardly more than ruffles this season, worn quite low."

@kerrismith

I've loved sci-fi since my early teens, starting with 2001 A Space Odyssey-still one of my all time faves.

I'll watch pretty much anything sci-fi, including @caroline2k, those dodgy old 50's and 60's black and white films.

Far too many to list -or remember 🙄 but nearly all of Star Trek, with the exception of DS9 and Discovery, both of which should never have got further than pilot episodes. I'll make an exception for series two of Discovery, thanks to the brilliance of Anson Mount as Pike and Ethan Peck as the long haired, bearded Spock. They introduced some much needed, lighthearted fun and continued in Strange New Worlds.

I would watch a lot more sci-fi but my wife occasionally imposes a moratorium as she suffers a crippling lack of taste (apart, clearly, from her choice of husband 49 years ago 😊).

Good topic, Kerri.

@alexina I am with you. I think Deep Space Nine and Discovery are the weakest Star Trek series. They are both hard to watch and have lack luster storylines.

@kerrismith Back To The Future is probably the best trilogy. But I also love most of the Star Trek and Star Wars.

@kerrismith 2001 was the first "true" science fiction movie I ever saw. I was only ten at the time and it totally baffled me. It even baffled the adults in my life. One of our local pastors thought that what he called "the block" (the monolith) was God. I didn't think it was but it surely represented something to us indistinguishable from God. And yet it was still something else.

Other sci-fi movies I enjoy and watch every chance I get: War Of The Worlds (the original), Forbidden Planet (A masterpiece of its age), The first Alien movie (scared the daylights out of me), Predator and Predator II.

I like Star Wars, mostly the original trilogy, but that's really more fantasy than sci-fi.

I'm a "Trekker" from way back and I think the best movie from that franchise was The Wrath Of Khan.

A couple of great movies made from books written by authors who really understand science: Contact (Carl Sagan), and The Martian (Andy Weir). Both manage to tell a great and thought provoking story while staying mostly within the bounds of traditional science as we know it without venturing too far into the realm of fantasy.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be a film base on Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous With Rama.

I'm actually more into sci-fi I'm print than on film, and I have dozens of books from that genre.

There's no way I can cover it all in one or several messages, but thanks for being up this topic.

Rayna

@kerrismith I'm not sure if Astrid likes SF as my original self..., few ladies do? Having said that, like Fiona, I enjoyed BBC's Blakes Seven, with real characters and sharp humor. For the bonus points: does Aech from Ready Player One qualify?

@kerrismith 2001 is my favorite movie. I've seen it over 30 times.

I love Sci-Fi! Fave authors are Heinlein, Jerry Pournelle, Phillip K Dick, Greg Beqar, Azimov of course.

In books, Footfall, The Mote in God's Eye, Starship Troopers (hated the movie), Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, and my big one is Ringworld.

@kerrismith As a cheesy Sci-fi it was ok. It strayed too far from the book and the writer is one of my all time favorites so it's difficult to read and love a book and see it commercialized.

I am not a nwrs, but I do enjoy sci fi, to a point. The problem with it these days is that it is all about CGI and explosions in space. Which of course is silly because, "In space, nobody can hear you scream."

...and if I recall, HAL never went bezerk, it just followed its programing tyo see the mission to its end. But, to be honest I never fully understood 2001. I have seen the movie a few times, and read the book, but as I understand it, you have to read the book and watch the movie more or less at the same time, as neither makes sense without the other.

I did enjoy some of the Terminator films and I like Arnie in general. I do love a good dystopian movie like Soylent green, Silent Running, District 9, Blade Runner (the first one, 2049 was rubbish), all The Matrix films.

I like anything 'spacey' really, most of my book-reading is sci-fi or fantasy. Let's face it, as a cross-dresser, I largely live in a fantasy world anyway.

Becca, now that publishers use such small font sizes that mean holding a paper book in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other, I use the kindle app. I also read mostly sci-fi but it's increasingly difficult to find sci-fi that isn't about space marines or interstellar wars.

Also, pressing and holding a word in a paper book doesn't bring up a definition 🤔

@alexina It's weird when reading a normal book not to be able to look things up as you go along. I do like a real book though and I do buy new from bookshops to try, in my small way, to keep them open. My local bookshop, a small affair in the town, is going to close around May quoting too many online sales and rising costs to make it worth continuing to run a shop. They are too small to open a café, like many have done in the big cities, and there is no other revenue stream to which they can diversify.

It's a shame, but it's just one more thing that's going to disappear.

@kendra2024 I watched it Thursday night with my wife. We both enjoyed it. The only complaint I have is they never fully explain why Jonathan E. was considered such a threat. A nice bonus was the dresses the ladies wore at the Jonathan E event.

@augustvaliant He was a threat because he was asking dangerous questions (his access moment with the supercomputer) and he had a huge fan base that could overthrow the status quo IF he ever realized that. Made me a big Maud Adams fan; she still looks good for 77, but now I look almost as pretty as she does! 🌹 🤣

I love sci-fi! I have a soft spot for dodgy old 50's and 60's B-movies as well as some of the more obscure Japanese films from the Toho studios - Latitude Zero for example.

@katie71 Serenity (and Firefly) are definitely in my Top 10 of Sci-fi!

Star Trek TOS too, and I even rather enjoyed the recent movie re-boot, although they couldn't top 'Wrath Of Khan' 🙂

I have to mention Primer which is a complete mind-bender of a film, which highlights perfectly the perils of time-travel.

@rozalyne Oh yes, definitely! Barbarella is a classic.

However, I recently discovered an Italian film called 'Danger: Diabolik'. It was produced by the same producer as Barbarella and at the same time, and has a similar glamorous campness. For my money (which to be fair, isn't worth very much!) it's the better film (although lacking Miss Fonda in her sexy spacegirl costumes) plus it has Terry-Thomas and the soundtrack is great too.

Sci-fi has always been my favourite genre too, mixed in with a bit of fantasy courtesy of Tolkien and the wonderful Sir Terry Pratchett (RIP).  I watched (repeats of) the original Star Trek on TV as a kid, along with Dr Who and Blakes Seven.  I've enjoyed many of the big film franchises over the years, and various standalone gems.

Sci-fi on film isn't the most partner-friendly medium though, so most of my indulgence these days is in printed form.  Alastair Reynolds now holds the top spot for me, "House of Suns" being a particular favourite.

This is being a great thread, many thanks to Kerri for posting it - I'm really pleased to have got some leads for a few more films and books to get my eyes in front of 🙂
