Inspired by Samantha’s reviews and the lockdown meaning I have more time to pursue one of my favourite pastimes of movie watching I thought I would post reviews of films I have seen.
I came across Blinded by The Light on Amazon, and as I have a liking for Bruce Springsteen I thought it would be worth the watch.
The film in set in 1980’s Britain and has a clear social message from the time, this focuses on a young British Asian man who feels stuck in his home town that is beset by racism and few career opportunities. Under pressure from his father to confirm to the cultural norms of his Asian rots, the man finds escapism in the songs of Springsteen.
While the above may sound quite deep the film is quite uplifting with the majority of the Springsteen songs of the time being cleverly interwoven into the film. Our American friends may not identify with the times of 1980’s Britain but at heart this is a simple love story entwined with the young versus old conflict that arise in many families. Based on a true story it is a entertaining film and fans of the Boss should not be worried that the great songs are misrepresented in any way.
A solid eight out of ten for me.
Hey Jessica - is it on Amazon Prime Video, or did you rent it? I might need to watch that. It sounds similar to Yesterday (with the Beatles music), which I enjoyed immensely.
Thanks!
Lexi
Hi Lexi,
It is on Amazon Prime. I have Yesterday recorded to watch, looking forward to it.
Hope you enjoy Blinded by the Light.

Would love to see both "Yesterday" and "Blinded by the Light" . Took me quite a while to really like Bruce Springsteen, but after learning more about him and really listening to his lyrics, it became more difficult to hold that opinion. So to know that a movie using his music set in 1980's Britain, shows how universal his music is, so thank you for sharing it and your review of the film.
Hugs,
Michelle
Michelle, it's funny that you say that, because I'm just like you when it comes to Bruce. It's only been in the last year or two I really started to appreciate him. I watched the film version of his Broadway show on Netflix, and that's what really started to turn me around, and get me looking deeper into his catalog.
Just watched "Blinded by the Light," and I highly recommend it as well. But, I am sucker for anything that shows the life-changing power of music. I wish everyone could have that feeling...
Cheers,
Lexi
Thanks for the responses Lexi and Michelle, I couldn’t agree more about the life changing impact of music. I have now watched Yesterday and loved it, there are some great musically inspired films around, notable Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman that show how powerful and inspiring music can be.
It is also nice to see how a film set in 1980’s Britain can transfer into the American market, I grew up in this era in a town in Northern England (think The Full Monty) so the social commentary resonates for me, but I also like movies where I can an understanding about the social and cultural times of other countries, hence why I love films like To Kill a Mockingbird and others too many to mention.
