Now I'm not normally one for liking much pop music (I tend to like my obscure electro and hard rock) but certain artists reach out to me. In this instance I'm speaking specifically about Pink. There is just something I really like about her.

Just wondering if anyone else has pop music that reaches out to them?

Love Charlotte XxX.

Hi Charlotte,

when I was growing up "pop music" would have been The Beatles, Sandie Shaw, The Rolling Stones and many others.

Do like some modern pop music, but a lot of it I find bland.  Do like the music of Pink though.

I was growing up at the time pop music transitioned: from Doris Day, Frankie Laine and Perry Como; then suddenly, it was Elvis, The Everly Brothers and Jerry Lee Lewis. I "belong" to the Elvis generation, but for some reason,"pop" goes much further back for me: to Bix, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Red Nichols. And I bet most of you ladies have no idea who I am talking about.

I grew up listened to the rock hit makers of the day - Hendrix, Zeppelin, Stones, etc. - and prog-rock pioneers like King Crimson, Yes, early Genesis, etc. I joined my college radio station in the late '70's and was immediately exposed to The Clash and The Ramones. It changed my life. I discovered artists and genres that were completely ignored by commercial radio. I've been hooked ever since. There is SO much good music out there waiting to be found. KEXP in Seattle is my go-to. It's the best damn radio station on the planet, IMO. As you may have guessed, I don't listen to much pop. But a few artists I do connect with are Prince (RIP), Beck, and Lenny Kravitz.

Love the clash myself. Train in vain is a personal favourite of mine. I grew up predominately listening to Radiohead, pixies amd at the drive in which one think had a profound effect on the music I listen to. I think it opened my mind to the weird and different.

Charlotte,
Yes, he made great music on the trumpet; and that voice! He was my #1 on the horn, until I heard Bix play. I think Bix could even show Gabriel a thing or two.

Agree.  Train in Vain is one of their best.  It's tough to pick - Clash had so many good songs.  Ironic most US radio stations now consider them "classic" rock.

Love the Pixies and Radiohead.  Such talented and influential bands - especially Radiohead.  I've seen the Pixies a couple times.  Really powerful and LOUD shows.  Would love to see Radiohead.  Someday.

I think it depends, of the more recent pop stuff, I would have to say LP is really appealing as well as Paloma Faith.  Though at heart, I am still a New Wave, Punk, Alternative kid.

Hugs,

Michelle

Where to start?

I have a fairly large and varied collection of music, ranging from heavy rock to folk to punk to classical.

Top of the tree has to be Kate Bush and Led Zeppelin, but Cowboy Junkies, Imelda May and Joni Mitchell are getting a fair bit of play at the moment too, but that'll likely change in a few days...
