[Sticky] Posting Song Lyrics on CDH

A Message from Staff

Song is a powerful medium for the expression of ideas, and from time to time members of CDH have included lyrics in their posts to illustrate or emphasise a special point.

Whilst this is perfectly understandable, we must always respect the international laws of copyright. Posting the lyrics of an entire song, or a significantly large extract, is a clear infringement of these laws. It could potentially result in a hefty fine or, at the very worst, the complete closure of the site. Naturally we don't want that to happen!

We kindly ask that members refrain from adding whole song lyrics (or substantially large extracts) in posts. Staff reserve the right to edit any such posts which may henceforth appear, in order to help CDH to comply with copyright law.

There are exceptions within the law, of course; brief quotes, say a line or two, are perfectly acceptable under the copyright clauses regarding "Fair Use". Song titles themselves may be freely stated.

The same laws cover a diverse range of creative material, including literature, dramatic and musical theatre works, TV and radio shows and movies. Using tiny amounts of dialogue from a movie or TV show will probably be acceptable, but if in doubt, leave it out. Staff may amend any posts which could infringe copyright.
