They are releasing a new movie this month and it should be on every CDH members wish list to see. It is called The Danish Girl and tells the story of self discovery in the CD world and the first Gender Reallignment Surgery. It shows the pain of losing someone close to you as well as the discovery of freedom when you open up to the experience. It seems like a remarkable movie and I hope to see some reviews of it here.
Best Wishes,

I went to see this movie last weekend with three cis-gender people, my wife and a couple who are close friends who know about Jane.
The Danish Girl is the story of Lili Elbe, Danish transgender woman who was one of the first identifiable recipients of SRS in 1930. Although not completely historically accurate (the time line of her surgeries was condensed for dramatic effect) the movie conveys very effectively the emotional impact of being transgender, as it affects the tg person and those around them. It portrays her journey from self discovery, through acceptance and eventually transition.
It is a hard-hitting movie and I freely admit to shedding tears, as did the other two ladies in the group. The bloke was at the other end of the row so I'm not sure how he fared. Although I am not transitioning the feelings and emotions really hit home. What was interesting is that whilst I sat there and cried, feeling so much empathy for Lili, my wife was crying because of her empathy for Lili's wife Gerda, who had chosen to stick by her and support her to the end.
If you go to see this movie, and I encourage you to do so, be prepared to confront feelings and emotions you might feel you've conquered. Whether you are a CD or are transitioning, many of the feelings you've experienced over your life will be revisited. They were for me anyway.
The best outcome from the movie, after we left the theatre, was the comment from my wife. After wiping away more tears she said "I understand so much more now." That in itself made the whole experience worthwhile.
Thanks for this Jane. I went to see this film with my wife. It bought a lot of intense and familiar feelings to the surface for me. Joy, sadness, anger, but also a feeling of relief that here was mainstream film that looked at transgender in a compassionate and serious way. it was deeply moving for me particularly as I was with my wife, who has been struggling to come to terms with my desire to dress and be feminine. She also empathised with Lili's wife Gerda's struggle to come to terms with her husbands desire to transition.
We both came away from this film with more understanding of each others feelings. My hope is that given time, patience and lots of talking we can reach a position where she will accept me dressing in front of her, at least sometimes.

Hi Joanna!
I first heard of The Danish Girl when my wife was listening to the audiobook in August 2018. We were driving my stepdaughter from Long Island NY up to Boston Mass to start her freshman year of college. We spent two days in the Boston Area and the book played whenever we were in the car. We finished it on the ride home.
At some point my wife purchased the movie digitally and I had been meaning to watch it for a long time. I finally got around to watching it about 3 weeks or so ago. It's an excellent movie and I agree that it should be every CDH members watch list or book list. I love how they portrayed Einar's transformation into Lili.
For anyone who hasn't seen it, you might find it on Netflix. Have tissues close by, you're going to need them.
Hugs

Brilliant book and film... what a magic tragedy with such an astonishing outcome! A very thought provoking moment in time.
I fell in love with him before the end of the film...
