Do any of you find yourselves watching television shows that have mostly women in them that are dressed rather formally just to see what they are wearing and how they have done their hair and makeup?

I know I do, and I get a lot of inspiration from these types of shows for buying my clothes, matching outfits, doing makeup and accessorizing.

I was also wondering if while you are watching you try to picture yourself with the same looks.

@jennconn Jennifer, it's not a conscious plan for me, but I do occasionally think 'ooh what a gorgeous dress'. And have to be careful I don't say that out loud as I'm sitting next to my wife. I certainly often imagine myself wearing the outfit I'm admiring xx.

@chrisfp99 it makes it so hard having to hide Chrissie, but we get good at talking to ourselves inside our brains.

Many many years ago when department stores sent out catalogues I would go through the women's section and wonder what I would look like in a dress that was being displayed.

Today google is my friend and if I want a fashion idea I do a search.

But I really admire Helen Mirren, Jane Fonda and others for their style and check out what they are wearing.

@jennconn I certainly do this.   I always try to catch the beginning of Live with Kelly and Mark to see what Kelly Ripa is wearing.  I love her style although I'm not a fan of the show.   I also like to see what newspersons and talk show hosts are wearing.

@jennconn Another one I forgot about...Project Runway!  I admire the vision, talent and skill of the designers.  While sometimes the outfits can be strange, many are just beautiful.  I love checking out the judges too!

I certainly have. Also my GG friend has an eye for all things fashion. She loves to color coordinate everything including her house!

She gets great bargains on jewelry at pawnshop's of all places!

Hollywood dose lend a helping hand to us. That's for sure!

In fact she lives closer to you than me. I'm in Georgia. She's in Florida.

The plus is She's one hundred percent in support of Fran! 🥰

Yes, I always pay attention to the women I see, whether on television or out in the "real" world. I notice everything, from hairstyles to the shoes. Of late, I'm paying particular attention to the hairstyle and jewellery as I'm letting my hair grow so that I can style it instead of fighting with wigs, and a girl can never have enough jewellery.

I never miss the chance to watch films from the fifties, I just love the fashions from that era!

Thanks for posting this, Jennifer.

@alexina I so do love the way women in the 50s dressed too Allie.  I love to see the women on Perry Mason they are all so pretty.  How exciting that you are growing your hair out.

@jennconn I often find myself wondering if a dress or something else I see a woman wear would look good on me. I once commented on a woman I saw at a winery when I was there with my (non-supportive) wife. For some reason I said, I think that dress would look better on me. THAT did not go over well with my wife. I still look and compare, but I keep my opinions to myself.

@jennconn Hey Jennifer, a very happy new year to you and your family!

I catch myself doing this a lot. For someone who loves Christmas, the more Hallmark Christmas movies the better. They are awash with inspiration for hair, makeup and clothes regardless that they all seem to be a size 8/10 🤷‍♀️

Some period TV, for example, Call the Midwife which started off in the 1950’s and is now in the 1970’s I love to see the retro look and how I can find inspiration.

Friends was a big influence with Rachael and Monica and what they wore. Like I said to someone on the chat, inspiration is everywhere and even in a coffee shop I’m noticing clothes, shoes etc. It’s a lot of fun.

Hugs,

Samantha x x

In always looking at what women wear, not just on the telly. One programme that I do watch just for the clothes is Strictly Come Dancing. I think the US version is Dancing with the Stars. Some of the dresses and outfits the female dancers wear are amazing. From long flowing ball gowns to short to sexy outfits. There are many that I'd like to wear.

Hi Jennifer!

I can think of 2 shows I have watched just for the clothes.... Project Runway and Making the cut. Both are fashion designer contest reality shows. Loved them.

Hugs,

Autumn

We haven't watched TV for a few decades. Call us culture deprived, I guess. However, we have the Internet and thousands of movies to keep us occupied.

Fashion in movies? Sure. Dolly Harshaw's tulip dress in The Hotspot? Eva Kendall's gorgeous Bergdorf-Goodman wardrobe chosen by Alfred Hitchcock in North-By-Northwest? I pay attention more than my wife ever would.

Hi Jennifer, when I watch TV I am always interested in the clothing women wear, more so than the plot a lot of the time! I agree with Cerys Strictly Come Dancing is great to see all the fabulous outfits, Tess Daly the main presenter on the show always looks fabulous and I often thing to myself 'I could wear that'..... A lot can be learned from watching women on TV, particularly live performances where makeup is often exaggerated to cope with stage lighting.

Jennifer -

A resounding yes to your question. Almost every show my wife and I watch we do that. Sometimes it is "how can they wear something like that" to "that is a pretty outfit" and once in awhile my wife will say "Suanne would look good in that" (that really feels good when she says that). I do get a lot of ideas from what I see and we do discuss what looks good and what doesn't. We really like watching award show red carpets and the lovely outfits some of the women (and occasionally men) wear. Some are over the top but most are gorgeous. Aside from dresses seeing and learning about jewelry, hair styles, make up and such is a bonus.

Have fun with your continued watching, I know I will.

XOXO
Suzanne

@cdsue yes Suzanne, you are so lucky to be able to share these shows with your wife, and to have her say you’d look good in some of the outfits, that would be a dream come true for me.

When I watch TV or out in public or at a conference, I always pay attention to what the ladies are wearing from heels to jewelry. That way when I dress, I minimize any fashion errors

I do not watch T.V. with the intention to see what the women are wearing but I will pay attention when seeing something that gets my attention. News and weather girls definitely wear some lovely outfits and are a key for me to seek out similar fashions.

@ab123 I love watching the news and weather girls too.  I actually tune my newscasts to whichever local station has the prettiest and best dressed women.

I do watch TV and often when I see a woman wearing a nice dress or top or skirt I sometimes think that would look good on me. Can't think of any in particular but I also think newsreaders wear nice outfits that I sometime think would make a good corporate look

Lizzy, I’m right there with you on watching “news readers”.  Plus I just love the term “news readers”.  We used to think that those people were so smart until we finally figured their talent was looking good and being able to read and sound like you were actually talking.

@jennconn My trajectory on “news readers - love it!”….was as a young adult I thought they were smart and good looking. Then, as I started to catch up to them in age I still thought they were good looking but began questioning their smarts. Then after I passed them in age I still think they’re good looking but smarts? You gotta be kidding!

I'm always looking for old movies from the mid 1930's to the mid 1960's where the starlets are wearing high fashion or evening gowns. I love watching Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, Audrey Hepburn, Vivian Leigh...etc wear dresses from that era.

@d44 my favorite stars too Fiona, don’t we wish that women could go back to wearing those fashions and look like women again?  It would be so nice.

I actually watch the shopping channels, which are quite frankly boring, just to check out the presenters outfits. I particularly like this time of year as they start wearing outfits that give off Christmas party vibes, with sparkly sequins and shiny faux leather.

The only program we intentionally watch is Wheel of Fortune to see Vanna's outfit.

Other than that we never watch something just for the clothing, but I certainly take notice of what the women are wearing and try to determine if I might look as good in some of the outfits. I must admit I love watching the movies based in Victorian times. There's something so feminine about the clothing the women wore. Of course there were the corsets, but even though they were basically covered head to toe the dresses were so pretty and feminine. I'd love to try one of those, especially the more formal dresses.

I suppose I must admit, that although I don't like watching because the stories are all so similar, the Hallmark movies do present the women in some lovely clothes.
