When I first heard the song “Let It GO” from the Disney movie Frozen, it struck me how well the lyrics describe the journey of exploration many of us are on with regards to how we express our feminine side. (After searching to be sure I had the words correct, I discovered I’m not the first to see it this way but the below are my thoughts I had before seeing anyone else’s about it). I encourage each of you to read the below and then go listen to the song with a new perspective.

For those who don’t know the basic story-line (and if you don’t you clearly don’t have young female children  ), it is about two sister princesses, Elsa who has the power to wield and weave snow and ice and her little sister Anna. The sisters love playing together, but one day while playing, Elsa accidentally injures Anna. The injured girl is healed with the help of trolls, but the parents, in their fear of it happening again, ask the trolls to make Anna forget about her sister’s abilities, and Elsa-feeling responsible for her sister’s injury, isolates herself in her room and tries to suppress her powers. Years later after the parents die, the two sisters get in an argument and Elsa’s anger causes her to lose control and plunge their world into eternal winter. Fearing she will hurt others again, she runs into the mountains to isolate herself. The rest of the story is about how love overcomes the isolation and eventually returns the world to normal weather.

But while in the mountains, Elsa sings a song that I think expresses many of the feelings we all have experienced to some extent in our lives.

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, Heaven knows I've tried

These words convey the dark times when we hide in our closets, lonely and confused, thinking we are the only ones who feel the way we do. We try to deny the feelings but they keep bubbling to the surface.

Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know!

We hide ourselves trying to be what everyone expects of us, and forget our feelings. We worry-not wanting others to know about our true selves. But then we are discovered!

Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door!
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway

Being confronted, our fear may turn to anger and denial. We may turn selfish…” screw the world”! But that anger only isolates us even more.

It's funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can't get to me at all!

But at the same time we realize that the fears of what would happen once people found out about us were far worse than the reality. And we begin to take our first steps in revealing our true selves, as we realize that it was our own fear that had been holding us back.

It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I'm free!

Let it go, let it go
I'm one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand, and here I'll stay
Let the storm rage on!

We revel in the new-found freedom, soaring into the world like a young bird who finally realized they could fly, and spreading our wings we reach to new heights and adventures.

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past!

Once freed from the shackles we had placed on ourselves, we commit to ourselves not to allow anyone ever again to clip our wings and prevent us from being who we are.

Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on!
The cold never bothered me anyway

Finally we enter the world and say “Here I Am”! I am proud of who I am and no one can take away my worth-not with cruel words or rejection or hate. I won’t allow the world to define me.

We are all at different points in our journeys, and though our roads and destinations are not identical, they wind back and forth across each other. Sometimes, we may have to break through the barriers that others put up to try and keep others from hurting them; but he power we each have is the sacrificial love and support we give each other. For love that demands nothing in return is stronger than hate any day. So whatever fears you may have of letting the world see you for whoever you are inside-LET IT GO!

Wow, Cyn! It is far beyond me to give such an insightful explication to the words of this song, so thanks so much for finding in those words meaning so near and dear to the heart of this humble closeted crossdresser! I am not yet to the stage where “But then we are discovered!” However, I hope that if I ever am (discovered), I will be able to say “Here I Am!” and maybe take some modicum of pride in the fact that, after all, I am a crossdresser, it’s just who I am.

As an addendum to your article, I would like to offer up my favorite Youtube clip of Frozen/Let it Go, complete with the actual Disney animation. Just do a Google search for:

Disney's Frozen "Let It Go" Sequence Performed by Idina Menzel

One can play it and follow along with the words you’ve given in your article. I did. I love the music and the lyrics. As a testament to the popularity of this particular clip, note that is has over a half billion views (is that even possible?) Just saying.

Thanks again!
Camryn O.

Thanks Camryn! I listened to that version and loved it! It really is the key-accepting who we are and not being ashamed of it. We are ALL worthy of love and respect because we are human-and anyone who doesn't accept that doesn't deserve a lick of attention;their opinions of me mean less than nothing!

Thanks Cyn! I don't think I'll ever be able to hear this song without thinking of the struggles of what it means to be CD/Trans. I started to cry as I read the lyrics as I looked at it with new eyes. I have heard the song played sooo much on the radio, but never watched the movie (kept meaning to though). As a GG (genetic girl) or CIS Woman (however you'd like to word it), it's sometimes hard to truly understand the struggle you all go through, it's easy to take it for granted. But at the same time, I can relate in someways, being 1st generation born here in the USA, I never really felt like I fit in, that I was always trying to assimilate, so for a good portion of my life, I was just too focused on that, instead of discovering who I am and how I want to live my life. I just know I am sick and tired of the societal expectations, because all the truly matters in life, is to be kind, respectful, and compassionate. I'll end with a partial quote "To thy own-self, be true".

Love, Gwenn

Gwenn, your comments mean a lot to me. I like the analogy you made with your experience as a child. And thank you for being such a great supporter of Michelle and all of us here and such a wonderful friend!

Thank you cyn for opening our eyes or our ears to that song it does have alot of meanings to our journey. As a CD I have closeted myself away . But when I was married and was discovered by my wife . She was like Anna and told me it was ok and to let it go. There is another song that should listen to that us girls should listen to it is by Queen. I want to break free. That song beats in us all we want to break free and live for us or to let it go. They are both the same .

Funny thing is, I didn't associate the movie or the song with my crossdressing the first time I saw "Frozen". I still don't to this day. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was in kindergarten because my bitch teacher raised hell about my excessive energy. I spent 12 years having pills crammed down my throat and spent half my days in special classes away from other kids. IN my teenage years, the medicine caused depression. I could relate to how Elsa's parents made her wear those gloves and kept her locked away from Anna. When I turned 18 in September of my senior year, I quit taking those pills and demanded the school put me in all regular classes. MY depression magically lifted, my athletic ability increased and I felt like Elsa felt when she built her ice castle in the mountains. Yes, I often dreamed of running away to the mountains. Although, not directly associated, the movie did get met o go out in public dressed en femme for the first time. Because I could relate to Elsa, I decided to be Elsa for Halloween in 2017. As a kid, I had worn my mom and sister's but never in public. Being out on the town in a dress brought back those fond childhood memories of sneaking feminine clothing and inspired me to visit a boutique in Vegas to further my crossdressing journey. BTW, I'm eagerly waiting for "Frozen 2"

Thanks for sharing your story, Christine! I think far too often, society tries to isolate those that they don't understand or that make them uncomfortable! Congrats on standing up for yourself and becoming a happier person!

At the request of student I used the script from the movie as a study text but still missed the nuances. Thank you.

Amelia, thank you for letting me know that my interpretation meant something. Nothing means more to a writer than to have made an impact

Nice to see others hear lyrics and apply the words to daily life.
Nice job on your recognition. Although these lyrics are cloaked in a animated "kid's" movie, they are highly applicable to a CDers lives.
Good catch! The concept...Don't, Let It Go!

Thanks T.J.-I really could see how my growth in accepting myself paralleled the lyrics to the song! Whether that was the original intent of the author, I think great writing lends itself to sharing universal truths.

Thanks Cynthia. Must have watched Frozen more than once and would have heard the song several times... But never hear the lines in a way you interpreted here.

Wow, this song really hit's home. I passed it on to my daughter who knows all of me. She has just overcome substance abuse and I think this will enforce her new beginning and the new life she has before her. Thanks for this Cynthia..!
