Hi to all my lovely Crossdresser Heaven Girls!

Today I’ll be covering tips on wigs to include where to buy them, colors to consider, how to take care of them, and how to store them.  I’ll be teaching you how to save a lot of money covering all the issues noted above regarding wigs!

First, never go to a brick and mortar wig store to purchase a wig. If you do, you’ll be paying between $100 to $300 for a wig you could have gotten online for between $29 to $69!

My favorite place to purchase wigs is out of a catalog from Paula Young Wigs. The average sale prices on Paula Young Wigs range from those $29 to $69 prices which are noted above.  Most of the time, the sale prices of the wigs in the printed catalog are better than those online. However, if you are worried about your wife or SO finding the catalog in the mailbox, you probably need to do your purchasing online and possibly establish a PO box at your local post office where you can have the wigs delivered to in order to keep them out the sight of those who you don’t want to know about your cross dressing. My wife is accepting of my cross dressing now, so I don’t have to worry about getting to the mailbox before she gets there. She also never opens any packages addressed to me and I don’t open any addressed to her as well.

As far as I’m concerned, and I have quite a bit of experience ordering wigs online and out of catalogs. Paula Young Wigs offer you the best bang for the buck. The quality of the wigs, the selection of wigs and colors, and their liberal return policy are all reasons why Paula Young Wigs is my place to go to order my wigs!

I’m a chin-length, bob-cut kind of girl and that’s the style that works for me. It took more than one wig purchase to find what length worked for me. The same may be the case for you. Same goes with the selection of the color of wig that’s right for you. I really like my auburn colored wig with the dark roots.

Your color choice is your own personal choice. I have four different colors of wigs. You may want to choose a color that’s close to your natural hair color or you may want to choose a color totally different from your natural hair color. Look through the catalog and see how various colors and styles look on women with different skin tones, face shapes, eye color, and other physical features which may match up well with various wig colors.

As far as maintenance of your new wig/wigs, don’t buy any of those wig maintenance items they will try to push on you if you order on their 1-800 number. Here’s my money saving tip for cleaning your wigs. I wash my wig/wigs in the shower while taking a shower and I use the over the counter shampoo I use on my own hair on the wigs. I wash and rinse them out in the shower and then towel them off once out of the shower. Then I blow dry them with my hair dryer and shake the wigs while drying them to help add body to the wigs. Just comb them out with a wide tooth comb after drying them.

As far as storage goes, here’s my money saving tip on storage. I bundle up two plastic Walmart bags and then place the ball of bags under each wig and place the wig on its side on the inside of an empty shoe box to store inside my Scarlett closet.

One additional point I would like to make; you’ll more than likely need to do a little trimming on each wig you choose to purchase after it arrives and you try it on a few times. This trimming process is very normal. Just try and trim as little as possible as you go. You can always take off more; however, if you cut off too much, you may destroy the wig. Take your time while trimming your wig. Go slow and take off as little as possible as you trim!

This is a quick highlight-no pun intended, ok...yes it was. I’m sure you have a host of questions to ask me regarding wigs. If you have additional questions, please feel free to send them to me in a private message.

Sincerely, Scarlett

You must be a mind reader; I was searching for a better wig yesterday, on Paula Young and at Wigs.com (I'm on their mail list). Paula Young's prices are so much lower than others that I was concerned about the quality. My current wig is a basic cap with bangs, and barely touches my shoulders. OK, but not enough bulk to allow for any styling. Wondering whether I really need to buy a lace front wig ; is it worth the extra cost? I know what they would say if I ask. I only know I need something age-appropriate - which will be gray and short or (possibly) mid-length. Your opinion, please, if you don't mind.
Hugs,
Bettylou

No Betty Lou, you don't necessarily need a lace front wig. I absolutely love chin length bobs. Now the one I always wear is from Paula Young and it's a Shannon, however, I had to cut and trim the entire wig until it looked perfect on me. Now here's the really bad news. I purchased three other Shannons and my hair cutter at Sports Clips agreed to take all three home along with my perfectly cut one to get the other three just right. I gave her $60 which was the $40 she asked to cut them for and gave her a $20 tip. I got them all home and they were all butchered and I couldn't fix any of them so they are currently buried in our local landfill! That was $180 bucks plush shipping for the three wigs and then the $60 to have them destroyed my my hair cutter. It took her a month to butcher all three! So from now on, I'll be trimming them all myself.

I just received three more wigs of different colors and will give them a go next week in a photo shoot. I don't remember what colors I orders and all three are still in the shipping box in my closet.

I think most cross dressers look the best with the chin length bob cut, however, there are a few girls on here who look like a real bombshell with the longer length. Personally, I look like a cave woman in the longer lengths.

One top on the trimming...It's not easy at all to get perfect on the cut. You'll see what I mean when you go to trim them. My advice it to cut just a little length off at a time until you think you have it just right. But you'll still kill a couple yourself in the trial and error phase of cutting wigs.

Good luck, Betty Lou, and I hope some of this information helps a bit!

XOXOXO Scarlett

All very good points and ideas. I only have one thing different that I do. Seeing how and all I am a touchy feely type of girl, I tend to want to actually hold what I am going to buy before I buy it. I am fortunate enough to have a brick and mortise wig provider not far from my home here in Florida. The owner of the business is a crossdresser herself and the GG's she has working for her are wonderful. I get to actually see the product that I am buying and sometimes even try it on. She also has very good sales on her wigs and she is willing to work with you on the price and everything she sells is very good quality and the prices she has are comparable to what you had mentioned. Possibly, if everyone looked around hard enough as I did, you may find a similar place in your neighborhood.

Thanks Danika!

You are very lucky to have a brick and mortar wig shop close to your home that would sell you quality wigs for the prices I mentioned in my article.

Danika, you're fortunate and definitely in a minority of wig buyers. I've been to the two in our area and they wanted anywhere from $100 to $300 and the prices were non negotiable. So you're very lucky to have that wonderful shop so close to you with such reasonable prices.

Those shops like the one you're lucky enough to shop in are very few and far between based on the input I've received from many other cross dressers on this site and one other CD site I'm no longer a member of!

Thanks for your input, Danika, and I look forward to your comments on my future articles.

XOXOXO Scarlett

Thank you so much, Scarlet! I am looking for a wig and haven’t a clue. Having been mostly underdressing over the years I am petrified at spending too much for a wig I don’t care for. Love the care tips as well. You are fast becoming my hero

I agree a chin length bob or slightly longer looks best.
My favourites are Prettyland wigs from Amazon(UK) - I have the ash blonde and the orange 35cm medium bobs. They look great on me (see my public photo's). At only £22.50 they are a steal - and I haven't had to trim them. And they last a long time too. I also have a Prettyland 45cm bob in a more layered style and that does need a trim - I haven't worked up the courage yet to get the scissors out. The big advantage of wigs with a fringe(bangs) is that you don't need to worry about the hairline - 'cos you haven't got one! And they frame the face nicely - reducing its masculine size quite a bit. It means you can hide in your wig.
I have totally given up on long wigs. They just don't suit me. They make my face look too long, and get in a mess easily.
I really do recommend an orange or copper orange wig. They transform your look, making your eyes pop and generally making everything appear more vibrant.
I hate wigs with a central parting and no bangs - the hair just hangs down either side of my face and makes it look more masculine not less- Shrek in a wig!

My opinion on the length of wigs exactly. Glad I have found another huge chin length bob fan!

Stepanie, I'm like you, the longer wigs look horrible on me! They make me look like a cave woman or ever a cave man!

I like the same colors and styles of wigs you like! They do give you such a more youthful look! That wig you usually see me in I've had for over 7 or 8 years. I've only washed it once and not because it was dirty or smell bad, I just thought is was a good thing to do at the time and washing it and rinsing it in the shower and then drying off with a towel and then shaking it while drying it off with my hair dryer just seemed to give it a fresh look. But looking back, I really didn't need to wash it at all. I'm never out in public while it's hot outside. The four nights I get out during the year are always after 7pm and it's never hot or even warm so my wig has never seen any sweat ever!

Many girls are out on a regular basis and have to perform regular maintenance on their wigs. I'm never out during the day so as stated above, I never sweat in my wigs.

Thanks, Stephanie, for taking the time to send in a response to my article regarding wigs!

Go Chin Length Bobs! Auburn, Light red, and other colors as well!

XOXOXO Scarlett

Scarlett,
I really appreciate the advice; thanks ever so much. Would you consider expanding on your wig article, with some detail about wigs? Basic cap vs lace front vs Rooted - and most likely other things about which I and many other girls here have no clue?
Meanwhile, it's back to Paula Young for me, so I can figure out what to buy next.
Hugs,

Bettylou

Hi Scarlett,

Thanks for all the great information. I totally agree with you that Paula Young wigs are the way to go. And it's funny you mention about the catalogues coming in the mail. After i purchased my first wig online, they unexpectedly started appearing in the mail.I managed to intercept the first few but one day my wife got the mail which of course included one of the catalogues. Not really a big deal because she knows about my dressing. Funny enough, It wasn't until a couple weeks later that she told me she did not immediately connect it with my CDing, but then the light bulb went off. She had nothing more to say about it, consistent with our current DADT arrangement.

But I did call Paula Young and asked them to stop sending those catalogues to respect my wife's wishes that I keep it all on the down low. But it's too bad because I liked getting them and seeing the variety and sale prices. But looking online is the next best thing.

Anyway, I wanted to share an additional tip about choosing a wig. Now, this takes some computer skills but nothing too advanced. What I do is take screen shots (or you can use the snipping tool) of models wearing the wigs I like on the Paula Young website (or other online purveyor). Copy and paste the photo into a program like Powerpoint or even MS Word. Then take one of your own head shots and crop it so that only the face part is left, and size it so you can superimpose it on the face of the wig model.

I admit this is probably too laborious for most but I have found it helpful to see how a wig looks with my face shape and features. I used this method to select my first and very favorite wig (the Ashley) that I purchased from Paula Young.

Hugs to you, girlfriend. Mona

A great idea on choosing the right wig specifically for the shape and skin tone of one's face!
Those who are technologically not impaired like me will appreciate this suggestion.
I'll never be able to figure out how to pull that process off because as you may have read from previous posts of mine, I suck when it comes to technology!
Love ya girl friend and thanks for taking the time to send in your response.
I was in that DADT situation with my wife for years. And I used to try to beat my wife to the mailbox so she wouldn't see the Paula Young catalog with my name on it.
Thank God now I don't have to worry about catalogs or packages that come to the home. I can now have anything delivered to my home without my wife opening the packages up. She is accepting of Scarlett and my desire to get my girl on on a regular basis! She knows that getting my girl on is actually healthy to my mental health and outlook on life.

Mona, last week, my wife even purchased me a sexy top while we were both shopping at TJ Maxx which kinda floored me! She has come miles forward with her accepting of my thrill of cross dressing.

We had "The Talk" about a year and a half ago and that's when all things changes on her outlook of the femme side of me. She knows she will always be #1 in my life and if it ever came became between here and Scarlett, Scarlett would have to go. But now I know Scarlett will never have to go and is totally accepted by my sexy redhead with only one exception. I can only dress while not in her presence here in our home which is just fine with me. I would feel rather awkward dressed as Scarlett around her. However, ironically, I'll always have that common fantasy of wanting to go out on a girl on girl date with that sexy redhead of mine. I know it will probably remain just that - a fantasy.

Thanks again for writing your response! Love ya girl friend! XOXOXO Scarlett

Hi Scarlett,
Thank you for brightening my day with your lovely smile... You look mahvelous in that pink dress. Your wig commentary was very timely for me... I needed your tips on washing and I have a shoulder length that needs a trim.
As a suggestion could you write an article on how you maintain those gorgeous legs !!! Did you have a pedicure or do the yourself.
Hugs.....Leonara

You're welcome for the wig tips, Leonara, and you are one of my biggest fans and I love you for always being there for me!

Good question on the nails. I have never had any professional help in person with nails or makeup. I learned all of my makeup skills by watching videos on line and I learned how to apply finger nail and toe nail polish by much trial and error by myself. My favorite toe nail polish is a really red gel polish by Revlon. It goes on smooth and easy and that particular brand and type is easy to put on but all of them are a pain in the but to take off as you probably know. As a matter of fact, that's the worst part of the cross dressing process I hate the most and that's the removal of finger and toe nail polish. I'm sure many cross dressers would agree with me on that one!

Thanks for your response Leonara and I love ya! XOXOXO Scarlett

To quote you, "I hate the most and that’s the removal of finger and toe nail polish"
May I tell you a story...during the winter I polish my toenails "sexy red" of course...however I was having my medical problems and Kathy wanted to take me to the ER.....I removed as much as I could... To make a long story short, before I was admitted to ICU I had a head to toe inspection .. The two RN's were OK with my "bloody toes" . A very embarrassing moment was handle very discreetly. LoL hugs. Leonara

Scarlett - have to wholeheartedly agree that Paula Young is the place to shop. I have a big head so I am glad they have so many large size wigs. And reasonable prices. Went to a real wig place for one purchase and way overpaid.

Keep your articles coming. They are always interesting.

Thanks so very much Steffie for agreeing with me on the information contained in the article on mine pertaining to wigs. I have another article coming out soon on how to share our thrill of cross dressing with others. I hope you enjoy that one as well!

Most people who go to those brick and mortar wig shops do end up paying way more than they should for a wig. Thanks for backing me up on that one!

Love ya and keep those responses to my articles coming in!

You're welcome Michelle! Just keep in mind - every one usually needs a little trimming. Just go little bit at a time with your trimming. I've butchered a few wigs in my lifetime so be careful!

I bought one “quality” wig, and had to ditch it at the end of a business trip. It was wonderful, but could not keep up the habit. Now I will try this and send to my PO Box. Getting more time alone so can manage. The on line now. Great helps, again. Thanks

Hi Scarlett,

I loved reading your advice. I just had my first wig buying experience recently, and I had a great time at a brick and mortar store in Louisville that was recommended to me by a drag artist in the city. I did pay more than Paula Young prices, but it was about $85. For me that was worth it because I tried on a dozen different wigs, had my two allies there with me to offer their opinion, and the shop owner was so sweet and complimentary on the whole process. I was clearly not her first crossdresser.

I found that hair that goes past my shoulders is ideal for me as I have quite broad shoulders. With the wig that I chose, there wasn't a dress that didn't look good on me. I was shocked, almost cried, really. My female ally gave me wide open access to her closet and literally everything fit and looked great, and I think it was all because I had found the perfect wig.

I've also done some reflecting on naturally long hair versus wigs, as I cut off all my long hair back in April, hair that was down to my shoulders. At first, I really regretted it, as I thought that it was such a great tool for crossdressing, but after my experience with the wig, I realize that my forehead is so large and square that no amount of styling will disguise just how dudely my head is. Thus, I am becoming more and more into wigs, as they feminize my head and shoulders, and now I'm thinking about having a small arsenal of styles and colors.

Thanks again for your article!
Ashley

Go for it girl friend! I must have at least four new wigs I haven't even taken out of the box yet. However, I can tell I'm not going to like them near as well as the one you almost exclusively see me in! It just fits my face, head, and skin tone perfectly. When out in public, no one has a clue that that's not my real hair!

I've had that Paula Young wig for well over seven years and wear it at least once every two weeks. I've only washed it in the shower once with my regular shampoo. It didn't need washing but I just washed it anyway.

I doubt, if the new wigs end up in the bottom of our local landfill, I'll ever buy another one! I have a total of about 8 or 9 now but my hair cutter butchered 3 of them and I need to get them in the nearest dumpster soon. I gave her my favorite one I always use to use as the model to trim the others just like it. She failed miserably so that $60 I spent on the trim jobs was a total waste. They are a huge mess but I never told her that. I just kept quite and chocked that one up as another trial and error and it ended up to be a huge error. I'll be attempting the trimming by myself from now on.

Gotta run girl friend so have a wonderful weekend and so happy you had some super luck at that brick and mortar wig store! 85 bucks isn't that bad especially when you got the chance to try on so many others to see how they looked on you. You can't get that done while ordering on line although Paula Young does have a very liberal return policy! I've never used it though!

XOXOXO Scarlett
