Hi everyone! I wanted to share an amazing shopping experience that I had with all of you wonderful ladies. So my goal for the day was to get as femmed-up as I could and make a trip to Walmart to buy some stockings. I tore the only ones I had the night before so I figured basic lingerie/hosiery shopping was a good excuse to go outside in public during the day.

Thrift stores are the best place to find clothes without spending too much money (I love Goodwill!) I can usually try on a few dresses without that many weird looks. It will start getting cold soon, so I was looking for a jacket, but also found a pair of cute faux-leather boots (and they were even in my size!) I just couldn’t help myself. I carried this pink and wine colored jacket with the boots right up to the counter dressed in my normal “boy mode” and smiled proudly when she complimented the boots. I know, right! Cute boots are cute boots. I took everything home and got all dolled-up; awkward makeup, curly brunette wig, press-on nails, and everything, but I made sure to dress nice and casual with simple black leggings so as not to stand out.

Nothing much exciting at Walmart; no one really notices anything if you keep to yourself. I tried my best to smile and say hi when the woman at the dressing room looked over at me picking out the stockings. I forced myself to brave the long checkout line instead of rushing through self-checkout so I could take my time and enjoy being out in public. After I paid, I was feeling good about everything and decided, "What the hell," and drove a few miles to the mall to see how well I would do around more people.

Again, there was nothing too life-changing at the mall, though it felt great to just walk around amongst everyone. I did make an uneventful lap around Victoria’s Secret; it was pretty crowded, and I was feeling nervous, so I walked over to Spencer’s Gifts instead. I didn’t realize they had such a great lingerie section! I found an amazing little teddy/corset to go with the stockings I'd just bought, and it was fairly close to the same color as my new jacket

I grabbed it off the rack (after having to jump in heels to reach it) and went to the sales girl to pay. I got so nervous, realizing that I hadn’t actually talked to anyone all dressed up before. I did my best, and she was so sweet! She complimented the color and said it was her favorite one (even she noticed that it kind of matched my jacket!) As I paid, she even complimented my nails and said how cute they were! I awkwardly thanked her and told her they were press-on. She reached out and grabbed my fingers as she was handing me my change to take a closer look and told me they looked great either way!

I swear she was taking an extra time talking to me, pointing out the return policy on the receipt and explaining their customer survey. She told me how to get store credit if anything didn’t fit. I’m not entirely sure, and maybe it was just in my head since I was feeling so confident by this point, but I swear she flashed me a cute little knowing smile as she folding my purchase and putting it in a bag. As she handed me the bag, she told me she thought I would look cute in it and hoped I enjoy it! I was floating on a cloud. I thanked her and walked back to my car. I was so happy and reassured, and admittedly, feeling a little awkwardly turned on by her kindness.

Awesome story, Brittany! Thanks for sharing your amazing experience. A you discovered, our fears are usually far greater than the reality we experience.

Brittany, in my limited shopping experience, I've found that if people interact with you at all, it is in a good way. I haven't yet gone out full femme (wig & makeup), but I was at Express in the mall today, to try on and buy a turtleneck top I wanted, and was complemented on my nails - and they aren't that well-done.

Thanks everyone for all the kinds words of support and encouragement! I've noticed that, when out in public, people tend to be so focused on their own lives that they hardly think twice about how other's look. A big part of the anxiety in "passing" or "not passing" is really about your own confidence!

Folks here are Right--the vast majority of the public rarely take notice of details--If your hair & clothes are Female people glance/assume that's what you are & go about their busy lives--& in retail/the service industry you are taught to be friendly with All Customers no matter what-(their paycheque depends on You spending money -Mind you there are lots of service folks who are genuine- & I certainly agree that second hand & thrift shops have nicer people (different personality) folks who volunteer & really want to help others--- I'm not getting out hardly at all this past yr -wife got very sick & died in May--with her--I was Brave & confident--(plus I wasn't so Broke) I do intend to turn that around but not sure how to do do it- Jane London Ontario

Thank you so much Brittany for sharing. I have yet to venture out although I often buy my stockings at Walmart (using self checkout) so I can picture exactly what your saying. Your story will stay with me an give me the confidence to do the same when the time is right.
Thank you again:)
