A beautifully written article. It expresses everything I went through too. It such a scary thing, going out into the great unknown, but such a fantastic thrill when you pull it off and everything goes well. I am so looking forward to part 2. Take care...Ellie

Thank you Ellie - I'm so glad you like the article! I've found that the fear you describe never really goes away, but if you can turn it much in the same way you turn stage fright into anticipatory excitement you can experience the thrill you describe. Part II is coning soon!

Darn it Kris, you stopped too soon.
Although I've been dressing for some years it was always at home, within my safe zone. I decided that this year was it, I came out to my friends and family as Jennifer. Since then my outings have been to friends with more drab, women's jeans and blouse type, earrings since I've gotten my ears pierced, nail polish, no makeup though, when going shopping. About 2 months ago I ventured out to the local alternative type bar/club in full, dressed to kill outfit, right to the 4" stiletto heels, and was so welcomed and felt so at home I've been going back every Thursday on karaoke night (just watch) and Saturday night just to meet new people. I'm very comfortable at this stage, but now I've been invited for a date going to a local quite upscale restaurant in the middle of downtown, and well, it's still scary, really scary. Friends, the alternative bar doesn't seem as much out, more amongst friends, this is like "OUT" out, like really out. I was anxiously reading your article, thinking wow, just what I need right now. It's like a cliff hanger. I'm anxiously awaiting Part 2, no stress, but hurry. 😄
Keep up the good work, it seems most of us are on the same road, it's nice to be amongst others who help clear the path.
Hugs,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer - I'm glad you liked the article! It looks like your experiences stepping out have been quite rewarding, so you know the fun it can be when you break through the fear of the unknown. We can all do it! Part II should be coming soon, it's with the CDH editors as we speak. I hope you like it as well.

Thank you for your interesting article! It brings a few things forward which are close to my heart, and in a way we are opposite spaces. Let me explain!
I'm now rather experienced at going out fully femme to just about any place any other woman would go, and I have an extensive wardrobe to back me up.
So, if I can so can you! I hope Part II has some more successes in it!

However, for most of my life, for even longer than I've been dressing up I've also been drawn to making music and to that end I've learned a number of instruments. However I was talked out of making a career in music, so I stayed an amatuer musician and only in the 10 years did I start to perform! OMG, how scary!!! Even now!

Hi Amy - I'm glad you can relate to my article. Yes, I guess we are in opposite places as my musical experiences came long before I put on women's clothes and went to the mall. I have found there is a significant difference between stepping out en femme and performance, which I go into more closely in Part II, so stay tuned!

Kris, you have a great gift of being able to express your feelings. I remember meeting another person like myself as it were yesterday. It was actually in 1977 or 8. That meeting changed my life. Thank you for telling your story. Hope to meet you at Keystone.

Kris,
Thank you for the well written and helpful article. So important to 'performance' is confidence, and I'm sure you have helped many here. I look forward to Part 2!

Hi Kris. What a thought provoking article .I did exactly the same on my first venture out as Samantha a quick 15 minute walk around my neighbourhood at 6 in the morning feeling a mixture of excitement and apprehension.
I'm yet to step out again amd when I do it will be fully made up which is something I struggle with.
I look forward to part 2 and send all my love and best wishes to you x

Thank you Samantha, I'm glad you could relate to my post! As I read the comments on my article, I find that so many of us started in a very similar way. I'd say make an achievable plan and get out again as soon as you can! I'll talk about all this in part II - which should be coming soon.

Kris this is such a well written and informative article, especially on the eve of an event like keystone. This maybe some folks first time taking that plunge into the public so your timing couldn’t be better! I can’t wait to read part 2, and btw the photo is a real winner! So well done Kris.

@melanieelizabeth Thank you Melanie - I do hope the article is something many can enjoy and relate to. Part II is with the editorial staff at CDH now, hoping it will appear soon - perhaps it will drop to coincide with Keystone - hope so!

Expertly conveyed, Kris. The analogy to performance, the thoughtfulness to the approach, all of it - an EXCELLENT article. Thank you!

@melodeescarlet - Thank you Melodee - so glad you liked the article. Part II will continue the analogy, and I hope it will be something folks can relate to as well. With the editors now, hoping its publication  coincides with Keystone!

Kris,
a thoughtful article about stepping out. It is a useful tool for me to relate my eventual going out en femme to stage fright. I know what stage fright can be from limited but generally successful amateur theatre experiences and from public speaking situations.
You look great in your pretty floral print dress surrounded by flowers on the steps. I love your smile and your accessories and the heels! I hope I can learn to look so good!
look forward to reading more of your posts.
Hugs,
Dee
