Back in December, I was feeling brave. I booked a five-hour makeover and photoshoot with Tracey Galligan at Femme Side Studios in Leicester. It was a long run-in to the actual appointment on 23rd July, and there was plenty of time to get cold feet. However, the closer the day got, the more positive I felt. Some people mention getting so nervous travelling to a makeover they consider turning the car around and driving straight back home. All I felt was excitement and a rush of adrenalin. I couldn’t wait to get there!

Not really knowing what to expect, I arrived with a whole suitcase full of clothes and shoes; so heavy I had trouble getting it up the stairs. Tracey instantly put me at ease. She has a wonderful way with people. From the outset, it felt as though I’d known her for ages. As we chatted she gave me a brief tour and then it was time to start.

I stripped down to my knickers and put on a dressing gown. I took my place sitting in a makeup chair in front of a mirror, under a big sign that said “Diva.” Tracey painted my fingernails and toenails. It should have felt strange. It was, after all, the first time I’d ever dressed in front of anyone. And yet, I felt completely comfortable.

Next came the makeup. Tracey explained what she was doing and why at every step, photographing each accordingly so I would have a record of the different stages. Primer first, then eyes, foundation, setting powder … bit by bit the magic started to happen.

When my makeup was almost complete (I loved every second), the next step was choosing a wig. Tracey makes a REALLY good cup of tea, which we had first. While it was brewing she picked out a “temporary” wig. It instantly made me feel feminine. I felt so happy that while she was out of the room I had a sneaky dance around to the music on the radio. It was good that the blinds were pulled down.

In my first year on CDH, I had a profile photo in which I was a brunette. It was the only fully made-up photo of me, dating from a charity makeover more years ago than I care to remember. The occasion itself had had a profound effect on me; I've written about it elsewhere. In my head, I was still a brunette. I went into the wig fitting convinced that only a brunette wig would be right for me. Tracey saw otherwise. The first two wigs she picked out for me were blonde; they just looked right. They suited my colouring, they made me look younger, and they just worked. She did try a few brunette ones, more to humour me. Those made me look old, pale, and frumpy. Auburn ones were better… but the blonde ones rocked. Tracey just knows.

Settling on blonde, we next tried wigs of different lengths and styles. She photographed each to allow us to properly compare them. Like everything Tracey does, she has this down to an art form. The end result is the one in the photograph. And... Oh. My. God. It was just PERFECT.

Now to think about clothes...

I’m decidedly wibbly around my middle (what can I say? I’m a work in progress) so a girdle was essential. Then on with the shapewear. What that did to my body was astonishing. Suddenly I had a figure ... and it was closer to an eight than a zero. In case you're wondering, none of this was in the least awkward for me. I was just Ellie getting dressed in front of a supportive friend. It felt absolutely normal, it was fun, and it was wonderful.

From the clothes in my bulging suitcase, Tracey picked out a blue dress. She found some white shoes to complement it, and then selected some jewellery, topping it off with a little clutch bag. My look complete, we headed to the studio. Tracey adjusted my makeup to suit what I was wearing …

... and THAT was when I looked in the mirror and felt as if the floor was falling away from under my feet.

I saw me.

I didn't tell Tracey, but I wanted to cry. Thankfully, I managed to stop myself; it would have ruined my makeup. However, it felt as though something in my head had clicked into place.

Having studio photos taken was another first. I felt awkward, not knowing what to do with my hands or how to sit. We had lots of discards; the various angles revealed my saggy neck, wobbly cheeks, and numerous wrinkles. Yet, despite the problems posed by her model, Tracey STILL managed to take some beautiful photographs.

When I first contacted Femme Side, I mentioned that I’d like to go outside and introduce Ellie to the real world, not knowing whether or not I’d actually go through with it when the time came. Well, this was the time. It was a lovely sunny day, I looked the best I have in many years, and I was wearing a lovely outfit.  I had no nerves at all.  After all the years of fear, stepping out of Tracey’s front door suddenly seemed like the easiest thing in the world.

I sat on a bench surrounded by flowers. I posed while Tracey took photos and videos. There were lots of people passing by; a gaggle of women on their way to a Weightwatchers class, a small group of girls, some teenage boys. There were men sitting outside a pub. None of them paid me the slightest attention. The only person who did was a middle-aged man who strolled past and told me that I looked lovely!

Tracey filmed me walking back towards the studio, opening the front door, stepping inside, and giving a little wave. I can’t walk in heels; watching the replay of the video, I'm all splayed legs and swinging arms. Although I might have looked convincing while seated, walking instantly gave me away 🙁

Back inside, Tracey picked out a dress from her own collection. I was dubious at first, but having learned that whatever Tracey suggests is something I should go with. Of course, she was right – it looked good. She added some strappy sandals and a bag. This time we didn’t bother with the studio. There was no stopping me. Had the heel length allowed, I would have sprinted outside.

There was an ugly blue van parked behind “our” bench, so we crossed the road. I posed by a flowerbed and then on a bridge crossing a stream. Several passers-by; no incidents.  At one point, because I was smiling so much, Tracey laughed and commented, “Feels like you’re being naughty, doesn’t it?” But the thing was that it didn’t. Standing in the sunshine, with the breeze ruffling my dress and House Martins twittering overhead, all I really felt was a tremendous sense of peace. I’m Ellie, I thought, this is who I am.

By now I’d gone over my five hours. Tracey asked if I intended to travel back to Norfolk en femme. I did; we picked out one of my own dresses, and she selected a wig for me to wear on my journey. Then, dressed and completely at ease, we sat and chatted over a cup of tea for another hour and a half 😊

I walked into Femme Side as a decidedly nondescript 60-year-old man. I walked out as… okay, I’m going to say it... a good-looking woman with no qualms about being out in broad daylight.

I carried that ridiculous suitcase back to my car, parked some way away, without a second thought. I even enjoyed the two-and-a-half-hour car journey; I didn’t think that being stuck in traffic could ever be fun, but you should try it while wearing a dress!

If you’ve stayed with this article so far, let’s summarise a few things:

  • It was my first-ever professional makeover.
  • It was my first time dressed in front of another human being.
  • It was my first time realising that I’m actually a blonde 😊
  • It was my first time going outside as Ellie.
  • And … it was my first time properly realising that this is probably who I was meant to be.

Where I go with that last one is anyone’s guess.

And if you are thinking of having a makeover, all I can say is “Do it!”. Beware though... it might change more than your appearance!

@ellyd22 You look absolutely amazing girl!   I'm very happy for you that it was such a wonderful experience.   You make a great case for makeovers.   Maybe I need to do the same very soon...  Best wishes for wherever your journey takes you now!

You make a great case for makeovers.

It definitely falls under the heading of 'expensive treat', but you get such a huge amount out of the experience that the expense is fully justified.

As well as the makeover (which doubled as a makeup lesson), the wig consultation and the photoshoot I learned so much from just talking to Tracey. I came away with my head stuffed with information and inspiration. And, Tracey being Tracey, I've had lots of contact with her since; giving me contacts for groups in my area, sending me links for a particular shade of nail varnish I was after, ordering a wig for me and just generally chatting.

She's one in a million!

Ellie, you were kind enough to give me a sneak preview of this article a while back - and now I'm an Editor, I was able read it again even more sneakily last night 😉 and so I knew it was going to be published today.  But it's so good to finally see it out on the forum and being enjoyed!

The detail and the sheer joy running through your story transport me straight back to my makeover at Femme Side in June - especially that big moment:  the gasp of delight and the beaming smile once the correct wig had been chosen and I finally saw what Tracey had done with me!  I know how I felt that day, I also know that it was so much more for you, something fundamental even:  I can only imagine the magnitude to  which your world was rocked, but I'm so happy for you that it was 😊

I'm counting down the days also until your next makeover with Tracey 🙂  That's going to be one very special day in so many different ways!  All I can say is, Tracey had better have a lot of tissues on hand and be very quick to apply them!

Huge hugs lovely 🙂

@ellyd22 Ellie, this is a wonderful article, thank you so much for posting it. It's great to read about what a positive impact your day was for you and how much you enjoyed it.

I'm really, really pleased for you and remember fondly the first time I saw Anna's face in the mirror so I can relate to what you describe. Also driving en-femme, not caring about the slow traffic is such fun isn't it?

The photos show you are very beautiful and looking a lot younger than me.

Keep on being fabulous

I told you there would be loads of interest!

I was looking forward to seeing what Tracey could manage with me before I, too, got a preview and since reading your draft, my booked makeup and go is now only a stop gap until I can have the full experience.

This edited version is no less joyous and, as others have said, inspirational. Honestly, Ellie, I have never felt as happy for others as I do since becoming a member here, this really touches the feminine side of me.

Yeah, dancing in heels, I'll be carrying a pair of (gorgeous, irregular choice, thanks @annaredhead ) flats in my new bag that evening.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Ellie, I can see why it can become addictive!

Dancing in heels definitely ain't happening!

I like your two-pair solution. Pink Punters in September will be a trial run for me and my one-pair plan, allowing me to adjust if necessary before Leeds First Friday 🙂

Will the distraction involve dancing in heels?

Only if a really MAJOR distraction is required. Dancing in heels would lead to me breaking both ankles and being carted off the dancefloor on a stretcher.

@ellyd22 Ouch, not worth the risk. I walk pretty well in heels and do well on stairs in them, but cannot dance whatsoever.

Any of my pairs of ankle boots would be good. They have lowish but wide heels and good ankle support. They're also quite grippy - less chance of slipping over in someone's spilled drink.

I think I could also move pretty quickly in them in the event of unwanted attention 🙂

@ellyd22 I should say that with my really high heels I can only walk in a straight line and have to duck to go through a door. I've just bought a pair of Irregular Choice glittery heels for my next photoshoot. Will give them a test walk shortly as on the shoot I will have to tackle stairs. They have a very curved shape to them.

And if you are thinking of having a makeover, all I can say is “Do it!”. Beware though... it might change more than your appearance!

Ellie,

I really appreciate getting a sneak peek at this before it actually published.  Thank you!

I wish I had your descriptive writing talent.  I've written several times about my first makeover.  I don't think I've ever captured in words what I actually felt that day.  You nailed it though.  Reading about your experience was like reliving mine in vivid detail.

What you experienced mirrors mine from five years ago.  Seeing myself when I stood from Gina Ortiz's makeup chair was like stepping into world that I didn't know existed.  My life changed that afternoon.  I knew it immediately.  What I didn't know was how profoundly that makeover would alter my path and purpose in life.

Like you, much more than my appearance changed on that day.  Getting that makeover was the catalyst for everything that's happened since.  Joining CDH.  Meeting tons of girls....some of whom have become chosen family.  Realizing it's so much more than the clothes.  Realizing I'm transgender.  Realizing that transition was the key to my happiness.  And learning to navigate the world I live in with authenticity.  I never could've imagined my first makeover would lead to the rich life that I have today.

Thank you for giving us a written panorama of your first makeover.  And thank you for being an inspiration to all the girls contemplating a makeover of their own.

I'm with @finallyfiona.  Your next makeover with Tracey will be a very special day.  Waterproof makeup seems a good idea.  LOTS of tissues too.  Can't wait!

Lots of hugs darling ❤️

Liz

In my case it's definitely started a ball rolling.

Whether that ball will keep rolling, or roll only so far and come to a natural stop, is something I don't know yet.

At the moment I'm just happy to know that it's on the move.

Big, big hugs

@ellyd22 I had never even thought about getting a makeover until I seen all the wonderful ones here. It would be interesting to see what someone skilled with makeup could do and how I would look in a couple different wigs. I’ve never had one for cross dressing before. I sure wish your gal was closer (Just a little anyways, lol) because I would definitely book myself an appointment

I’m definitely going to do it. The big cross-dressing storage and closet is only about an hour and a half away from me. I’ve been down there several times but I’ve never done anything as far as a makeover goes there. It would be fun just to see, the variety they could come up with that’s different than what I normally do. You girls have set a high bar for sure. I really want to get a set of real acrylic nails to go along with that, but I’m gonna need some time off work to make that happen. I suppose the press on nails will have to do for now but they definitely add to the pictures

Stevie - I'm intrigued by 'The big cross-dressing storage and closet'!

What IS that, and WHERE is it? I'm wondering if it's somewhere that CDH should contact to make sure they have a link in our 'Local Places' section, if they aren't in it already.

You might have seen a post by Liz K saying that we're keen to refresh the 'Local Places' area of the site. One thing I'm hoping to do here at the UK end is build a little directory of all the makeover services on this side of the pond to make sure that they're all represented.

There are more than people think 🙂

Voice dictation in action 🤣🤣

I tried to say Janet’s Closet in Wyandotte, MI about 1.5 hours from me lol. Yea, a big storage closet would be really cool lol

It’s a huge crossdressing store. Really neat place.

I was trying to edit the post and it wasn’t loading. I figured that would sound kinda screwy 🤣🤣🤣

Voice dictation in action

It took me a while to figure that out, but then I saw that 'the big crossdressing store, Janet's closet' had become 'the big crossdresser storage and closet' 🙂

I'd just been imagining a giant wardrobe, with lines of crossdressers wandering in and out ... perhaps the entrance to an alternative Narnia.

Janet's Closet doesn't seem to be in our 'local places' list, so I'll see if I can sort that out.

@ellyd22 Yeah, voice dictation can do some pretty goofy stuff sometimes. I actually think it would be awesome to have some kind of cross-dressing consortium where gals can get together online and buy, sell, trade and swap clothes.

Its one of those ideas that sounds great in a forum post, but the logistics could prove to be complex and challenging. It would have to run primarily on an honor system, a Modicum of trust and vulnerability would have to be involved. Not everyone is into, or could participate openly in such a program.

At the same time, however, I have a ton of stuff that rotates in and out of my main wardrobe that I would love to share with others As opposed to just donating it back to the thrift store.

In many instances, I tend to do the same thing Mona does. Buy stuff I think is pretty, take pictures of me in it and then donate it back to the thrift store or give it to someone if the opportunity presents itself. Of course, keeping the stuff that I really like. I have a ridiculous amount of clothes already though lol

And all seriousness, if you ever had any ideas on how to make something like this work, please by all means let me know. I would be very interested.

Something like this came up once before in the Forums. As you say, it sounds like a great idea on paper. Sort of an eBay for crossdressers.

cdBay?

Why not start a separate Forum thread on this subject and see if you get any useful feedback.

It isn't just interesting to see what someone skilled with makeup can do ... it's mind blowing.

I wasn't expecting a full-blown wig consultation to be part of my session (Tracey just kind of threw that in). I think I tried on around 20 different wigs, but it was interesting that her instinctive choice of the very first one (which was just a 'put this on so you have something on your head while I make a cup of tea' wig) was pretty close to what we finally ended up selecting.

She's that good, and clearly knew me better than I know myself!

It's amazing, isn't it?

On the one hand you look in the mirror and think 'Dammit ... I will never be able to do that on my own'.

On the other you now have a clear idea of what's actually possible, and that's an inspiration.

@ellyd22 You're so right Ellie. Firstly the makeover has to be looked at in isolation. It's a quite exquisite experience that will be treasured for ever. But there's no harm in having something to aim for. So it's aspirational as well as inspirational xx.

Well Ellie, that was the article I had been waiting for; it was a joy to read and to share your experience so vividly.

Posted by: @ellyd22

I walked out as… a good-looking woman

Others have already said it, but it is worth shouting it from the rooftops - you really do look absolutely amazing; "good-looking" totally understates it. Your face in the picture radiates an inner joy and a sense of calm, ease and completeness. Like many others here, I am so pleased for you. And you totally rock the blonde look - super cool, or super cute as Christy said.

As for heels ... well we all get on differently with them. My wife can't live with flats; I have tried heels but at my age they give my toes and knees bad vibes if I try to wear them too much. This summer I seem to be much more at ease with flat sandals or low heeled sandals than anything too high. It looks as though I may have to accept the constraints of age as far as footwear is concerned!

Best wishes and many hugs, Rebecca x

Rebecca

You've seen me in real life (or as close as we've managed so far) so you know what a miracle the photos on my profile page are. Favourable light disguises the wrinkles; favourable angles disguise the droopy wobbly bits; expert makeup and an expensive wig disguise EVERYTHING.

And don't forget the shapewear.

What I have been reassured about though is that I have the potential to scrub up well. That at least gives me something to work towards 🙂

But I'm totally with you on the whole low shoes thing.

Big hugs

@ellyd22 Hi Ellie,

You write beautifully. I've always loved your brunette photo, but I now agree - you're a blonde! I had no idea you'd never dressed in front of another human being either. Hearing you so happy is the best thing. Stay cool

Yup ... it was my first time EVER properly dressed in front of anyone (other than that one charity event at school, which was more like play acting and so doesn't really count):

Ellie, Isabel and the Mermaids … an origin story – Personal Crossdressing Stories – Crossdresser Heaven Forums

It should have been nerve-racking, but it was anything but. I felt totally at ease - just one girl dressing in front of another.

And I am SO definitely now a blonde. Tracey got it right the moment she laid eyes on me.

@ellyd22 Ellie, have you ever posted a full picture of your old profile photo? I think it’s quite lovely. Just wondered.

Have you ever posted a full picture of your old profile photo?

Short answer ... no, I haven't.

When I first signed up here in July 2023 I used that as my profile pic because it was the only photo I had of me in make up.

It took until this 2024 makeover before I summoned up the courage to post any other photos in my gallery. There are just so many good-looking girls here on CDH; uploading my own photos seemed a bit daunting.

I do have the full photo somewhere. It actually IS a real physical photo rather than a digital image. I'll see if I can dig it out 🙂

I would love to see it. I always thought you looked really good. I wouldn’t have known you were a biological guy seeing it. Not at all.

The psychological certainly overruns the physical in this case. Now you also have a base to work from as far as honing your make up skills and being able to use your own makeover photos as a reference point. I personally think you make it look effortless. you have great facial features already

As I often like to say, I think you “clean up” very well

@juststevie

That's not entirely true, sadly.

A lot of it's to do with favourable angles 🙂

Side on ... big nose (can't do anything about that) and obvious jowls (can do something about that).

If I look down ... double chin (I can do something about that as well, i.e. exercise more and eat less).

You'll notice that all the photos I've opted to post  - and I've chosen them very carefully - are either face on with head held level, or looking slightly skywards.

I know what's possible now though. The only way is up 🙂

  • And … it was my first time properly realising that this is probably who I was meant to be.

Where I go with that last one is anyone’s guess.

No prizes for guessing what I'm guessing. When you know, you know!

I'm so glad you had such a great time & that you got so much more than simply a makeover out of it. When you realise what you got for your money it makes it all worth while.

I know what you're guessing, and I imagine that lots of other CDH girls are guessing the same ... but I genuinely don't know at this point!

Time will tell.

@sashabennett This for sure! Without a doubt, she got much more than a makeover. I would say it was absolutely money well spent. Sometimes, the best things we get out of certain events in our lives don’t come from what we directly got if you know what I mean.

@ellyd22 Thanks so much, Ellie, for sharing your wonderful adventure. This just another example of why I LOVE LOVE LOVE CDH. When we all can freely share our stories, even if there are problems along the way,we get the chance to encourage each other to explore ourselves.

For me almost 4 years ago when I had my hair colored for the first time. It was only after reading so many great stories here at CDH that I worked up the courage to make the appointment. I went through with it even as I was sitting in the car just before the appointment I felt so sick.

I was even able to on the very next day when my Ex offered to pay for my ear piercing (she thought I would chicken out)for my birthday that day. I was so excited I couldn't answer yes fast enough.

In my opinion just shows that we will never know where we can go, and where the line is which is to far if we never push ourselves.

@loneleycd

I went out shopping for hair colour with my sister the weekend before the makeover, as it was another of the things I'd promised myself I'd do post-retirement. The next day my Mum helped me colour my hair.

It's a '6.3' 🙂

I didn't recognise myself in the mirror for the next few days, but I'm fully used to it now. It might need a top up in a couple of weeks' time.

@ellyd22  It  seems that you really are meant to live much or  of your life as woman, but I am glad to hear that the experience has cemented that belief.   I hope you take every opportunity to practice what you learned from Tracey in your every day life.

Hmm. I know that I am Ellie, and that's the name I call myself. I self identify as female, and my Femme Side experience was a lovely affirmation of that. Living fully as Ellie ... well, that would be wonderful but various things get in the way.

I'm actually quite happy at the moment. Since I'm single I get to be Ellie most of the time, and I can switch back to drab when it's convenient or necessary. It's not a bad way of being 🙂

I'll second that lovely 🙂  I was in drab most of today in the end, but actually still feeling quite me rather than him.  That was the last time for more than a week to come, at least that I'm planning!

Awww ... thanks Nikki 🙂

There's lots more excitement to come in late September and early October when I get to go out in the company of some of the other CDH girls for entire evenings (*gasp*).

And obviously we'll be telling everyone exactly what happens 🙂

Big hugs

@ellyd22 Hi Ellie.  I just had to say, at 60 or any age, you look stunning girl!!!

Posted by: @ellyd22

I walked into Femme Side as a decidedly nondescript 60-year-old man. I walked out as… okay, I’m going to say it... a good-looking woman with no qualms about being out in broad daylight.

Unbelievable.

I'm actually 61 in September 🙂

It just goes to show:

1). The power of makeup.

2). The magic of Tracey Galligan.

I'm the youngest of three siblings. My middle sister is two years older than me, but looks ten years younger. She definitely has a portrait in the attic.

@ellyd22 Thank you for your refreshing and beautifully written account of truly becoming Ellie.

I am a hair's breadth away from getting that professional makeover - or closer, if I could finally get rid of my facial hair which for 35 years has been part of my male persona familiar to family, friends and colleagues.

I deeply suspect that once I've passed through that studio I will, like you, be reborn and find that I really am Katherine - and might never want to go back.

Much love,

Katherine

As I've discovered (and many others here on CDH have repeatedly pointed out) makeovers are wonderful things. However once you've seen your female self looking back at you from the mirror there's no going back.

Although they're great fun, every makeover service should have a big 'Approach With Caution' sign outside 🙂

@ellyd22 thank you Ellie for sharing your experience, you look absolutely gorgeous. I had my first makeover in early June, not as glorious as yours and had many of the sensations you experienced. It boosts your level of confidence to another level. Yes you definitely look like a women and a proud one too. Your story will certainly encourage others to adventure it. Congratulations!

@ellyd22 Hi Ellie, what a wonderful and uplifting article article. It brought back so many memories of my own journey. I must say you definitely are a very attractive woman who would have no problems passing at all. You photo is stunning!

I have always done my own make up but when I was at Diva Las Vegas last year the girls talked me into having Amy do my makeover at Just You. All she does is trans girls. Isn’t it amazing being pampered and catered to? Afterwards we went for manicures and pedicures as well. It was an amazing afternoon. It is also very addictive, isn’t it?

You must have been so overwhelmed and happy especially because of all the firsts you had in one day. It must have been so satisfying and confirming having the gentleman compliment you on how pretty you were….. another very addictive thing in being out in public and being admired in public. Your adventure that day will be with you for ever. Luv ya girl.

Trish ❤️
