This year for New Year's Eve I will find myself dressed and enjoying the femininity that comes with it. That excitement and fun will be tempered as I will be by myself, however, I wouldn't be surprised if I do venture out for a short drive or something like that. Even so, I will enjoy the evening with a nice meal at home, leaving lipstick stains all over my glasswear, and more than likely putting on my own personal fashion show.  Is anyone else so lucky?  Able to dress?  Big Party or quiet night at home?

@celestecd I dress full time at home (alone) but I DO make a special effort on New Year's Eve and have a proper formal dress (or two) for the occasion 🙂

I always open the front door at midnight to let the New Year in, open the back door to let the Old Year out, then go out into the back garden to watch the fireworks. While there, I make a toast to the incoming year, look for a shooting star (you'd be surprised just how often you see one) and make a wish.

This year, I'll raise a glass to all my new CDH friends ... you're a very special group of people, and I've loved getting to know you over the last six months. I don't feel alone anymore, and that's DEFINITELY something to celebrate.

I've come a huge way since the beginning of July. It's scary, but also exhilarating, to contemplate how far I might go in the next year.

Rest assured that I'll be here as the countdown to 2024 approaches ... though remember, US friends, that I'm in the UK and will already be pretty squiffy while you're still wondering which shade of lipstick to wear.

Hugs

@ellyd22 Ellie,I believe I will do the same as you,I have 2 or 3 special outfits I will wear for the occasion  even though Michelle wont be out and about partying.Just the mere fact that I can wear them will be enough to start the new year out the right way.Thank you,my friend, for the push in the right direction.Enjoy your day to the fullest.

@ellyd22 I love the idea of opening the door and letting the new year in! But you can be sure that if I try it, the door won’t be open long as it’s usually pretty cold here in Vermont on New Year’s Eve.

@ellyd22 That's an interesting tradition, Ellie.

However, I haven't seen a shooting star in decades. Too much ambient light in the big city.

@harriette I'm in a particularly dark bit of 'deepest, darkest Norfolk' so I'm fortunate in being able to see them quite a lot.

New Year's Eve coincides with the Quadrantid meteor shower, which puts on a show between late December and mid January. At its peak (3rd-4th January) there are up to 110 meteors an hour, so if the skies are clear as Big Ben chimes it normally doesn't take me long to see one. That's the point at which I make my New Year's wish 🙂

Ellie, this is one thing my wife must do on NYE also.  Take it easy with that 'squiffy' feeling or in the morning you may be sorry. lol  Cheers, Victoria.

@celestecd As New Years Eve is on a Sunday AND I am out as Cassie almost all the time.  My plans are going to Church in the morning and I think I will be working my part time job at Torrid at noon.

@celestecd sounds like a lovely night in Cleleste.  If you asked me this question two days ago Id say I was going to Philly for a concert.  As of yesterday that may turn into a night with friends here.

@celestecd I am a docent at the Palm Springs Air Museum. I will be on duty on the 31st from 10am to 5pm. I will be dressed, of course in the women’s version of our “uniform” (logo shirt, khaki skirt or skort, logo baseball cap, tan/white wedge heel sneakers - actually not specifically part of the uniform!).

@celestecd Thanks!

We were quite busy on Sunday and that surprised me. Lots of families, extended families and kids.

I chose our F-117 hangar for my volunteer time. I often make this point to our visitors:

“Over the life of the F117, 558 pilots flew them. Of those 558, 5 were women. They never built any 2-seat versions of the plane. They were all single seaters. They offered to the job to the most experienced F-15 and F-16 pilots at the time. You did the training, you did the simulators and then they turned you loose in a plane. But, for the women, this means that they were among the Best of the Best fighter pilots at the time.”.

Often when I say that to mothers, grandmothers, aunts, etc. often they will nudge the girls and say “Did you hear that? Did you hear that?”. I get a big charge when that happens. I am reminded of the old Lone Ranger TV series. At the end of the show when everything was straightened out, the Lone Ranger would say “Come Tonto. Our work here is done!”. I set out to pass this information along and that is what happened. It isn’t classified, but it isn’t widely known either. For that family, my work is done.

@traci429 hi Tracy over the next few weeks I’ll be updating my profile pic with those from my NYE. To be honest I didn’t go through as many outfits as I thought I would. It was fun nonetheless.   Hope your evening was good as well. Happy NYE!

Ellie that is a lovely note.  This place is amazing isn't it?  I love how you open up the front door for the new year and let the past year out the back.  I may just have to do that...in between changing my lipstick shades 🙂

@celestecd  I do the run through the house also. And carry a piece of coal for good luck. It's been a tradition in my family for as long as I can remember (at least 80 years) and must have been done for years before that. Best, Marlene.

I can't see myself going out and paying extra to see an odometer turn over or to watch someone drop the ball. I live with two adult children. One is planning on going over to friends for a couple of days around New Years, and the other one is unlikely to stay up to midnight anyway, even more unlikely if they are working the next day (retail). Although I'm likely to be alone (especially late in the evening), I'm unlikely to dress up any more than I usually would.

In addition, this New Year's Eve/New Year's day happens to be the anniversary of my Mom's passing on the Hebrew calendar, which will make the whole thing a little bittersweet. I'll be leading religious services over zoom in the early evening that day, and not be able to dress before then (or I'll have to hide behind a sweatshirt).

For the past 6 or so years (except covid in 2020) I've held a gaming NYE at my house for my friends. Roughly 15 or so people just playing games for ~12 hours. Yeah...we're kinda geeky 😉

@ellyd22 Which games? People will bring dozens and I have...maybe 100 or so? A couple of people in the group are all 'The New Hotness'-type having the latest Kickstarter or whatever. Still, the steadfast games get played invariably as well. For us those are, in no particular order: Brass-Birmingham, Captains of Industry, & Dominant Species, among other.

Now, let's be clear, if someone mentions a game that rhymes with Ponopoly, the room wil grind to a halt and dirty looks will be given. 🤨

@melodeescarlet I don't play Fronopoly or Prabble. Board games leave me cold. However, my ex and I once lost an entire day playing Commander Keen without once getting dressed or eating ... so I know I have an addictive personality for 'actual' gaming.

And Discworld novels.

I've never heard of any of the games that you've mentioned.

Now, they're all I can think about.

I feel I need to back away from you as quickly as possible and never look back.

@ellyd22 Wow....Commander Keen. I have not heard that name in DECADES! lol

Yes, sorry, 'gaming' is nebulous term. I do play video games from time to time, but as a social junkie, the tabletop variety stoke that flame.

Discworld - yes, another area of my expertise. 😉

@ellyd22 OK, so my SO is totally not into games so we won’t be playing. But in his teens my son got really into Discworld and I also became addicted. Terry Pratchett worked in the same company as me and once said he would “write a book about his experiences if he thought anyone would actually believe them”; he reckoned, probably correctly, that Discworld was more believable than some of the situations he had to deal with.

@ellyd22 Picking a single one is too difficult: notable titles for me are: Thief of Time, Hogfather, Small Gods, The Truth, & Going Postal. I went to the NA Cons from 2009-2013, and in the UK in 2014. I was lucky enough to meet Sir Terry on a few occasions and he was simply the nicest person.

'Small Gods' and 'Going Postal' would also be up there for me; so would 'Mort', 'Wyrd Sisters' and 'Guards, Guards!'

You know, I'm beginning to suspect that we might be sisters rather than just friends 🙂

The same as every year - stay home have a nice meal and attempt to stay up until the ball drops (usually have to set alarm to wake up for it) - don't know yet if I'll dress for it or not - that will remain to be seen - either way it will be a nice night.

I like Ellie's idea of opening the front and back doors to let the new in and the old out. This year may need to set up a fan to help the old get out of the house.

@shadowqueen The secret is to not open both doors at the same time.

Open the front door. Beckon the New Year in. Give it a gentle stroke. Fondle its ears. Allow it to sit on the welcome mat and get its bearings. Close the front door gently so as not to alarm it. The whole thing shouldn't take more than ten seconds or so. Have a saucer of warm milk ready for it and use calm, slow movements. You want it to be favourably disposed towards you; first impressions count.

Then, go the back door.

Fling it wide open, give the Old Year a sharp kick up the backside and slam the door shut behind it. Over in a flash with minimal loss of heat.

@ellyd22 thanks for letting us know how to do it - I was just going to open both doors for a few minutes. Just curious though - how do you keep the new one from escaping with the old?

@cdsue @shadowqueen The warm milk makes the New Year relaxed and drowsy. You have to time things so that it's about half way through the milk before booting out the Old Year. As a precaution, close any other doors within the house to trap the New Year in one room. Don't alarm it in any way or it may try to bolt.

If both years escape at once, you'll find yourself trapped in time.

That wouldn't be a great start to 2024.

I've had in the past few years, had a formal 5 course dinner for about 16 people, 15 of who know nothing about Sherri but if they saw what she was wearing under her drab outer ware. Uncertain

I start the day off under dressed, then lunch with some friends at a bar I only go to on New Years Eve day, then we go and launch model rockets. After that it's home, change my cloths and under garments and begin to prep the meal (which I insist is all done by myself, I love to cook,) and ready the house for guests. About an hour before they arrive I change again into what I feel at the time is my prettiest and sexy lingerie and wait for my guests. Dinner doesn't start till 8:00 for two reasons, 1 to give me more time, and 2 so people can stay awake till midnight.

So I get too under dressed 3 times, cook up a storm and Spend New Years with some of my closest friends. But this year will be a little different do to the fact that my wife broke her pelvis last week and I think that would be a little much for her to have happen in the house. So I'll still do lunch, launch rockets, make dinner for the 2 of us and put on my prettiest, and sexiest outfit and bring in the New Year with the love of my life instead.

My partner and I just got tickets to the New Year's Eve event at Tracks in Denver. It's an LGBTQ+ night club, and the first place I went out in public as Rilee on Halloween earlier this year. I've been pretty excited putting a new look together, but also a little bummed I didn't think about it earlier to get the shoes I really wanted lol. I'll be adding some rhinestones to some pretty plain low heeled sandals I have so hopefully those will work out well enough😅

I have two problems with celebrating New Year’s Eve. One my Job may require me to be gone as I’m always on call and AnnaBeth isn’t getting any younger and she needs her beauty sleep. So the likelihood of me greeting the New year are pretty slim but that being said I will wear a pretty nightdress to bed.

We're off to friends this year. We normally host, but our friends invited us to theirs. Cerys will be going. I haven't decided on the outfit. It will be too short, and the heels too high (probably). It's a mile walk to our friends. The walk to and from our friends is always enjoyable. NYE is one of the few times I'll wear stiletto heels out. They sound great on the pavement!
