for the past two years we've had a halloween photo contest.

they have been fun...

however, Halloween is a very American tradition, and not so in other places.

we're thinking that if we have one (we aren't approved to have one... yet) we might consider another theme that is more universal with all of our members.

Without further ado, I ask you this...

What theme would you like for a contest?

@billiejay Sorry Billiejay - I had to choose Halloween. if you had asked me a month ago I’d be up for anything, but I’ve already spent my budget on this year’s costume.  On the other hand - with an audience that just loves getting dressed up, why limit to just one?  Love to see 50’s era competition (poodle skirts), 40’s era (pin up gals), hippie era, rock stars, etc.,so much fun!  But  having spent a small fortune (for me) on my Halloween ensemble - please don’t kill it this year Beg

@chrissydee I'm not killing anything...

I'm merely giving other ideas a chance.

and it's always The Management Council that makes these calls, I'm just one vote.

@billiejay And I applaud the effort - as has been seen already, there's plenty of good ideas out there.  I simply  would urge the Management Council to take into consideration the timing of any change to this year, but not at the expense of  welcoming new opportunities throughout the year.

@chrissydee I like the 40s pinup girl idea. It doesn't take much in the way of clothes and you can do a lot with hair and makeup.

Chrissy, Halloween has traditionally been the”coming out of the crossdresser (me especially) so it could be anything “a day in the life”… BTW you piqued my curiosity, I would love to see your costume… no matter the contest theme!

@leonara Thx Leonora - rest assured you will (so long as the scheduled dressing date holds true).  I’ve invested too much $$$ to turn back now 😉 .  Hope I can pull it off (but it’ll be more fun putting it on…).

@billiejay My first choice would be Halloween but as you say it is done a lot. Summer with sun dresses and swimsuits sounds like it would be fun.

@billiejay  Irish and Scottish immigrants took many Halloween customs to North America in the 19th century.

@billiejay Thing about Halloween is it is open ended people can basically do whatever they want. which can make more people comfortable enough to present.  But because of that its not really  a theme. And is a very broad category for all us  Broads. 🙂  Or you can say Cosplay which is just an excuse to do halloween anytime.  not like we need an excuse. !!  something more specific will be easier to judge but may get boring for the viewers.  Something like roaring 20s or The 70s  may be wide enough to allow creativity and still be a theme.  Unfortunately I could never pull off Twiggy though.  im more of a stumpy. lol.. Cheers RC

Here are a few suggestions for themes.

Little Black Dress.

Out Shopping.

Red & Black.

Conventions.

Casual Styles.

but polls are fun, right?

How about unpassable and don't care. In other words out and about crossdressed without passing.

@tracyh Hmmm, has possibilities. Hip huggers and a tight sweater with hard hat, work gloves and an attitude. It could work.

Before I vote, I need more information. I haven't been on CDH for any previous photo competitions so do not know the criteria. Is it anything that matches a theme, or is it mandatory that it has some relevance to cross dressing (I'm assuming the latter considering where we are, but I have to ask)? Selfies seems redundant since there are thousands of pictures of ourselves here already, but trying to find other cross dressers who are willing to have their picture taken might be a little difficult.

Perhaps someone could point me to a past thread for photo competitions so I can see what was posted?

As has been said, Halloween is very big in the States but, certainly in the UK, it's a festival for children going to their friends houses, generally accompanied by non-dressed parents at a discrete distance; it is considered an annoyance by non-parents for the most part; bit like carol singers at Christmas. We are a dour, cynical lot over here.

Sometimes pubs will have an evening for it but not often.

In principle, I like the idea though.

Cheers

Becca

@rebeccabaxter Check out the 2023 Halloween Contest Rules and  2023 Halloween Photo Contest Photos. There have been typically been prizes (like a few months free at CDH) for photos in various sub-categories.

@rebeccabaxter I took my kids out on year with a fake cast on one foot, a crutch and a wine glass. It was a very good year. I haven't been a part of any photo contests here either, but I think it is based upon the best picture in a particular category.

I'd prefer a seasonal theme (any of the 4 seasons provided is OK with me). I'd really hate a Christmas or Holiday theme for much the same reason you are looking to change the Halloween theme - not everybody celebrates Christmas. I'm Jewish, I don't celebrate Christmas, and Hanukkah is really not a major holiday.

@billiejay So is that one contest around Oct 14 for those in Canada and another around November 28 for those in the US? 🤔 😋

I was thinking formal wear. So many of us girls have all these lovely cocktail dresses and formal gowns and have nowhere to wear them. It would be a chance for us to show off our best of everything.

Sci-fi. Either a known programme or film, or make something up.

@d44 I'm in the glam evening and cocktail dresses camp. Mostly cos  a/. I've never done Halloween at all, either in drab or as Caty b/. I've always loved formal and cocktail wear and c/. have the outfits to have an entry.

Happy (formal) dressing

Caty.

PS The organisers may think about various age categories. I'm an "old bird" and could never compete against a "spritely 40 year old, (or younger)

Also, have to trust entrants to post current.... shots. I have lots from ten years ago when I look a further ten years younger. Not so anymore!!..

@ryanpaul Date of taking is easy to check for using the photographs metadata.

@rebeccabaxter Thanks Becca,

But I was only using the "ten years" as a "metaphor" of "ageing" and how I have "matured"

Caty.

@ryanpaul Oh, I thought you were referring to someone, not you, putting up photographs from years gone past and therefore cheating the judging system, hence the metadata check; I think we were at cross-purposes. 🙂

I voted other. Here is my proposal:

A “Miss CDH” contest where we all show off our best pageant looks - swim suit and formal gown and a “fun category.”

Would be fun and combines a lot of ideas that many have already proposed.

I picked autumn because you could show a little skin like in summer, or a little wool like in winter.

Much as I try, I'm really self-conscious that I don't look especially pretty. I hadn't realised there was a beauty contest.

@annaredhead Anna, my dear, I'm pretty sure that most of us here wouldn't exactly be considered an oil painting. There are exceptions, but in general, we have to get by with what we have. I have seen your pictures and you look fine to me.
