This is kind of a funny story, but if you blink you might miss the humor. Anyway, I've underdressed for years and at this point I don't own men's underwear except for a shabby (but clean) old pair I keep around for scheduled visits to the doctor.

Monday afternoon was a day of unscheduled stuff, beginning with an unscheduled dismount of my motorcycle on the interstate. I don't remember anything between "of s**t" and the unscheduled ambulance ride. In the unsheduled emergency department, they wasted no time in cutting off my clothes and getting me into a gown. I remember thinking "well, there's no hiding now!" Not from techs, nurses, doctors, firemen, EMTs or even the State Patrol trooper. Everyone, check out my lacy starred thong! In the context of a medical emergency, it was a refreshingly comedic moment.

I'm ok. It could have been much, much worse. I got a displaced fracture of my right clavicle, and fractures to ribs 5 and 6 on the right side. Did I mention I'm right-handed? Of course I am...

Shock

Oh Nikki, my heart sank at the start of para 2, but lifted a bit in para 3. So sorry to hear this, but it is amazing that you can see the 'funny' side of the situation. Did you get any comments? Maybe now it the time to throw away that last remaining old pair of underpants since there is nobody left to hide from!

I do hope you make a rapid recovery.

Lots of hugs (though not too tight and hard for a few weeks), Rebecca xxx

@fembecky Nobody said anything, but in Emergency Medicine they've probably seen everything! To think, there was a time in my life when I would have died of embarrassment, but nowadays I'm "lol, lol, lol..."

@justnikki That sounds like a nasty injury. Wishing you a speedy recovery. I've had a bit of experience with a displaced shoulder fracture myself. Whilst no 2 will ever be the same, I am happy to talk you through the rehab if you ever want to message me. Mine also on my right (also right handed).

In the meantime, rest up, sleep lots as it's a great healer and let the medics take care of you. Have they recommended any surgery?

(Gentle) hugs,

Anna x

@annaredhead I have a surgery consult in a week. The orthopedic surgeon in the emergency department thought I was about 60% likely to not need surgery. Not great odds but at least they're in my favor!

@justnikki That sounds favourable, hopefully a lot will change in your favour with a week of the trauma starting to heal. Hope the week is comfortable for you.

@justnikki

This definitely falls under the umbrella of 'dark comedy' 🙁

I am so glad you're (more or less) intact.

I've had one motorbike accident in my life (unless you count a broken scaphoid bone, in which case two). It wasn't even that bad in terms of the outcome, but I went sliding one way across the tarmac on my hip and shoulder and the bike went the other. It was a 1000 cc Yamaha Fazer, and therefore big and heavy. I'm lucky I wasn't under it.

It scared me so much that the bike has sat in the garage gathering dust ever since. And by 'ever since' I'm talking 17 years now!

I can't remember what underwear I had on 🙂

Get well soon

Hugs

@ellyd22 My wife was pretty surprised when I put motorcycle road racing on the TV when we got home from the hospital last night (Moto GP British Grand Prix at Silverstone). I'm blaming it on the drugs! Glad your dismount wasn't worse! Mine was a 450 lbs. Triumph 1200. Glad it didn't land on me...

@justnikki Ow! Tough break, or two, but HOW'S THE BIKE?

One must have priorities you know. Let me see, golf, baseball, chopping wood, chopping anything for that matter. If you work this right, you could get meals served and be Chauferred around for a couple of months. Wow! This could be the luckiest break you've ever has.

Take care, move slow, learn to wipe left-handed. :^)

@tia Insurance rep says its repairable! And I have full coverage and no deductible, they'll even cover my helmet and other safety gear. Might be fixed before I am!

@justnikki Looks like we are both lucky. I just had a new engine put in my car in Southern California, drove 700 miles home and had an accident on my way to the grocery store. I was afraid they would total the car, but they agreed to have it fixed. That was a relief. Nobody injured but my pride. The accident was my fault.

Take care, Tia

As Nietzsche once said, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger"....and apparently you've a newfound sense of dark humor!

Not that your 'unscheduled dismount' needs an exclamation point!

I'm reminded of when SpaceX engineers would refer to rocket explosions as 'rapid unplanned disassembly'.  Well of course it was unplanned!  Who schedules such things?

But I digress....

I'm glad you are okay.  Relatively speaking of course.  I feel bad for your lacy starred thong.  No doubt tossed unceremoniously into a biohazard bin and subjected to high-temperature destruction.  Cold comfort that the hospital folks see things far more startling.

Now that the whole world knows, perhaps you'll be inspired to wear something really edgy?

Get well soon.  Laugh on your left side!  Enjoy the excellent drugs while they last!

Hugs,

Liz

@lizk Few things hurt more right now than laughing! And in a plot twist, I was permitted to retain my undies since my injuries didn't extend below the belt, except maybe my pride!

Honestly, in that moment, and in the context of being in the ER after a motorcycle accident and not full aware of my injuries, or even fully aware of much at all, the last thing I was worried about is what people though of my foundation lingerie!

@justnikki My wife was an ER nurse for much of her 35-year career and they see it ALL. I could write a book just on the stories she could talk about.

@justnikki Firstly, glad you are (mostly) OK. Unscheduled dismounts are never good. I very much doubt you are the first starred thong wearer who has been through the ER though so other than a loss of said thong I wouldn't worry much about that. My one similar experience went something like, car, roundabout, Ooh I'm flying? pavement, ambulance, cubicle, nurse.

Nurse - OK lets get those shoes off

Me - Picks leg up to take off shoes, at the same time, nurse bends down to take shoes off. Shoe & nurses face make contact.

Me - "Oh my god I'm so sorry, are you alright"

Nurse - "yes, I'm OK, don't worry about it"

So, lets try that again. Rather than picking leg up I bend forward to take shoes off. At the same time Nurse bends forward to take shoes off. Two heads clash vigorously.

By this time I think she was getting a bit annoyed & I was getting very embarrassed. Fortunately for us both, it didn't continue like that & before long I was back home looking at a very bent KH400 & a Big repair bill. Still, at least I wasn't wearing a thong 😆

@sashabennett I once had a go on a Kawasaki KH350. What a nutter bike. the throttle was like a switch. One second I'm behind a car, the next, I'm overtaking it while balanced on the back wheel! I rode it for about 10 minutes and that was quite enough of that. The guy I borrowed it from had just bought a KH750, I hope it was less of an animal.

@justnikki Im so glad your Ok.  I would love to ride a motorcycle but I worked in the ER for years and  ive just seen too much.  On that , yes! in the ER they have seen it all they may have chuckled a bit on the side but the concern for your well being is always up front and center.  as far as they know your SO did not do laundry this week and thats all that was clean lol.. Wishing you a speedy recovery.  Cheers RC

@river I think we all needed a laugh after all that! Doesn't bother me a whit! My mom was a nurse her whole working life; there's very little they haven't seen...

@justnikki I’m really glad that you’re alive. When it comes to bike wrecks there is a very fine line between walking away, and being dead. Thank God, it’s not the latter in your case. ❤️❤️ it sounds like EMS got to you pretty quick. That’s a good thing too.

i’ve had some close calls on a bike, but it’s been a long time. I’ve got some pretty serious issues with one of my knees now and I’ve only been on mine once this entire year. I’m just gonna stay off it. I don’t want a sudden stop to put me in the hospital if things go wrong lol

Hopefully you’ll get good news from the orthopedic surgeon and you’ll recover quickly. I’m just so glad You are here to tell us a cute Story about everyone getting a good look at your panties.

They’d find them on me too. I wear them every single day lol. Take care of yourself☺️❤️

@juststevie Thanks so much, Stephanie! While I'm not ready to hang up my riding gear just yet, I've already decided that commuting by moto is out; the risk/reward ratio is just too out of whack to justify it.

Get well soon , Nikki. Hope you have a good recovery. I dropped a bike many moons ago. I didn't go to hospital, but I'd managed to cracked a couple of ribs. You know the saying "It only hurts when I laugh"? I didn't realise how much I laughed.

Oh Nikki, I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I've had my share of broken bones, mainly through sports injuries, so I feel your pain. Any surgery required? I think you're going to have to give it time. No squeezing into any slinky dresses for a while I'm afraid. Did any of the hospital staff say anything? I'm sure they've seen it all before.

Underdressing has never appealed to me, which is a shame really as I have no other opportunity to dress. It's all or nothing for me. Heal well hun.

Hugs, Chrissie xx.

@chrisfp99 I’m with you on underdressing.   I have tried it on several occasions and just want it all.  I’m trying to convince myself that panties are far more comfortable especially in the summer heat then my boy underwear which are bulkier.
oh the mind games!

Hey Nikki,

Ouch!  Wishing you a quick recovery.  Reminds me about 12 years ago I passed out.  Woke up and enjoyed an ambulance ride to the ER.  Fortunately didn’t have my clothes cut off.

@aliceunderwire I have no memory of the actual cutting itself, just of finding the shreds of my t-shirt in a bag after the fact. The jeans coming off, though, was a moment I'll never forget!

You and Ellie ride / rode the BIG ones! No 100 cc pip squeaks for either of you. 'Never have driven a motorcycle. Many miles and memories in my Nishiki and Schwinn bicycles. Now, seriously, I'm very impressed with your attitude in this accident and your replies to comments! I - like all girls here - hope for you a full and speedy recovery! Same for your machine!

Oh, I CAN relate to this : " only hurts when I laugh, cough, sneeze, move, or breathe..." Right collarbone fractured once. Left clavicle: 4X.No surgeries. Last break was rough, in 9th grade gym class, "touch" football. Second biggest guy slammed into #1 me. Down into the muddy grass went I. Crack. Fracture healed into a bone plate from broken ends overlapping. Maybe surgery would've been better. Rest, recover.

@conniech Thanks, Connie! I try to find the humor in things, especially the hard things. The difficult part of past couple of days has been the fear, the shock, the pain, the frustration, even the timing (first day of school is 8/29 and I might miss it). I'm 58, I don't bounce back from injury like I used to, and that scares me. But finding the humor and absurdity in it helps rob it of its power so I can focus on the gratitude. Grateful I wasn't more seriously injured, grateful for my loving family, grateful for the spontaneous expression of love and support from my friends and my community. I will heal, my machine can be repaired, but what I'll take away from all it is the gratitude, the stories and the jokes!

Nicki,

You're 100% correct. Docs, the ER, police have all seen it before, to them it's usually no big deal. But that's a nasty ouch you've got there, the next few weeks are going to be very uncomfortable. I used to ride a Vulcan cruiser and only went down once, luckily it was at 10mph and all I got was a sprained shoulder.

Take care of yourself. Very soft hugs,

Fiona

Having rolled a car off the freeway at 70mph and walking away from it, I can say the gact I was wearing panties never crossed my mind. Fortunately other than some rattled guts I was fine and passed on the amblance ride to the hospital the fire department EMT was suggesting. Afterwards it did occur to me that I was wearung nice panties, buy at keast they were clean as my mother aways taught me.

Nikki -

Sorry to hear of your unscheduled dismount and glad your injuries weren't worse then they are, no that what injuries you have aren't bad enough. Wishing you a speedy recovery. I don't underdress very often and that is one of the reasons. Personally I could care less at this point but my wife is worried about what would happen if. When I first brought up underdressing with her she said what would happen if you wind up in the ER and your daughter comes to pick up your clothes. I understood what she was saying so abide by her wishes. That doesn't mean I don't push the envelope sometimes. If it was up to me I'd wear panties all the time.

XOXO
Suzanne

Her Nikki,

Having spent 20 years in Emergency response, I can assure you that no one is going to remember the exact details of the incident. And even if someone on scene or at the hospital did it would not matter. Your condition and stability from a medical standpoint are all that matter. Glad to hear you are OK.
