After a shockingly vivid dream about the lady mentioned I began to think deeper about her - and the other Spice Girls’ place in my life. Awkwardly, I am certain this occurred because my daughter has come to request the video for « Wannabe » all the time and usually my deep, ancient thoughts don’t come up. Then today, thinking about her again and that very nice and unquestionably masculine reverie I remembered how many times I have fantasised about wearing a short white dress like she does in that video!
I remember all my feelings when I first saw it 23 years ago, at the very age of my peak cross dressing activity. I have always been a serious music guy and dismissed them pretty well, but it was really coming from a few jealousy, wanting so bad to be a part of their girl power and be cute and silly and pretty with a group of girls who got me.
As I’ve grown up and married and had a daughter myself I only appreciate them more and more. I had remembered earlier the envy but I see now how deep and specific it really was. To be them - and Baby most of all was the ultimate fantasy!
Aoife, I recently watched "Wannabe" and yeah I get that about her outfit. Back then I was very much in the closet but there were stirrings between them and Shania Twain's outfits in a few of her videos as well. I was not much of a fan of the music then since I was all about the new wave/alternative scene but a twinge of envy was there.

Yeah pretty funny to think I’d be labelled gay for something like that! Such escape and aspiration in there. The girls needed it but so did the boys in a very dark place with no positive outlets apart from some very negative music. Well, at least my time came eventually.
Ever since I was 4 and wearing pantyhose and heels, every time I saw a pretty girl wearing something nice. I wanted to wear what she was wearing and look like her.
For me, my I have to dress and look like her girl was Daisy Duke.
That song changed British music for a whole generation! I dismissed it at the time it was released but now, like you, I do have a new appreciation for it.
It was always Geri’s outfit for me in the video itself, although as I am more of a autumnal sort of girl, so has to be Baby’s outfit in the 2 become 1 video.
This is becoming more clearer to me now, taking more notice of outfits and styles from pop/music videos especially. Taylor Swift seems to be a good source of inspiration currently. I am sure we will do a Spice Girls day at work, Geri, here I come!

Oh yeah that « 2 become 1 » video... we don’t watch that one with our little girl. After all that time getting up every morning to wear my mom’s clothes, dreaming of being a « female impersonator, » and just dreaming of being a lady that’s what confirmed I was still straight! Yeah I was thinking about those adorable outfits, but I was thinking a few other things I understood even less too. Those five ladies were pretty damn formative for me it seems!
