I've been thinking & reading alot about what it takes to "pass" in public, and it seems that one way is to "dress down" when dressing up.

On a recent shopping trip, I took the opportunity to observe what the GGs were wearing, and it seems pretty clear that womens' daily fashion these days is all about PANTS.  Out of 200 women observed, 190 wore some form of long pants or leggings (and of the 10 that did not, half of those wore dress that was cultural/religious in nature). Only 4 wore dresses or skirts, while the fifth wore shorts and hose, and most stood out.

I get it - in order to blend in, we need to take our cues from the GGs we want to become, yet I just don't feel feminine in pants/jeans (and I don't have the body for leggings).  What's a girl to do?!?

Rachel...

Please do not find any role models at Walmart! I have seen, just recently, a plethora of hilarious pics of all the retards that go to Walmart!

Ohh, what a laugh!

Polly 💋💋💋

I’ll post a pic of me in pants!

Hee hee! I would never consider Walmart customers as role models!  But it was a chance to view GGs shopping, and for me to observe what would be required to blend in.  I went to another store later that day, and pants were 30 for 30 (1/3 jeans, 2/3 leggings).  But I love, love, love my dresses, skirts, hose, heels, etc.

I guess I'll need to find a nice feminine pair of jeans!  How tricky is it to find a pair that fits well?

Hugs,

Rachel

I go to senior dances twice a week, in male attire.  Out of maybe 50 women, two will wear a dress or skirt.  So jealous of their ability to do that.

I just found a lovely pair of easy wear pants in stripes at a Salvation Army shop! The material is fab, the drap is fab... and the price? $2.00 US or $4.00 NZ!

Please dont go to Walmart... the very worst of places for finding role mnodels! Even in the evry worst of places in my city... there are no people like Walmart customers!

Save our souls! Polly

Hehe.  Someone mention pants?  190 out of 200, that's more than I thought....  I guess that means it's quite "womanly" to wear pants.  C'mon, ladies pants are shaped and styled differently than those drab drab jeans we had to wear.  Be it a nice high rise or lower cut faded jeans, they look quite feminine on the ladies I have seen.  And capris were designed strictly with women in mind, and go nice with heels and a nice blouse.  Looks hot.  Now, no pitchforks and torches please, I have said yes to the dress.  I do love my dresses, especially with spring springing up, but I love my comfy - and feminine - pants too.  It takes more than a pair of pants to make me feel less feminine anyway.   🙂

Pants vs skirts or dresses depends where you go shopping. High end mall I see skirts and dresses quite often and the pants are nice and form fitting. Walmart I see sloppy dressed GG's wearing everything from wife beater's, tent dresses and bedroom slippers. I'm always the best dressed girl at Walmart when I have to go for cheaper paper products and other things I can get a deal on. I do wear nice denim jeans including Capri jeans. I also wear skirts without thought even to Walmart. If I'm going to a really nice area shopping I will put on a nice dress usually from Draper James. What I have noticed is quite a few GG's have totally forgotten how to dress nicely and are starting to mimic looking like sloppy guys. I was in Publix the other day in my denim skirt, sleeveless top and sneakers, I saw other GG's in denim skirts, so I blended in completely.

Wow....

I never wear pants!!!( In England it's trousers, not to be confused with panties....I always wear them!!!! )....leggings in winter, dresses, skirts in summer...I bought a pair of pants from  a Tesco's sale rail....but that was really the " heat of the moment"...haha

As ms Plumb put it so eloquently....

"The ability to “pass” is a myth.  Aim rather for being “accepted” as female. You don’t have to be perfect, just convincing. Which is more about confidence than appearance."....

If you don't have the legs for anything short....a long dress with heels or ankle boots....or even flatties is beautiful!!!!....

In the warmer weather in England, there will be plenty of dresses and skirts about.....never limit yourself.

Pants, however they are styled....are still pants!!!!!..( thanks Bart)

Just my humble opinion,

Grace xx

This is an interesting one because at home (if dressed), I would never dream of wearing pants/trousers.  Skirts and dresses or maybe my fav leggings, leather of course *giggles*

I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the outfit I will wear out (not ventured outside yet) as things look to slowly start getting back to normal.  I do not have a femme body in the slightest and my drab body isn’t exactly great either so I (almost) decided on either girly jeans with ankle boots or long dress with strappy heels.  I’ll probably go with the jeans and boots for the first time if I’m honest.

As Grace said earlier, aiming for accepted is much more appropriate and, as such, a lot can be achieved with deceiving clothes and hose for ‘non femme’ legs (like mine).

Summary is that, for me, it’s almost certainly a confidence thing and I’d like to think that in the fullness of time I will get out in a skirt or shooter(er) skirt.

You’re so right, Rachel W, that GG’s are not being the most girly in the main and that could be contributed to the pandemic, year in lockdown etc and I for one certainly hope that as time goes on, we’ll see a return of a plethora of gorgeous dressed gemmes to admire and take inspiration from.

Love Rachel H

I hear what your saying but I do wear jeans when I’m out at times. I find it doesn’t draw as as much attention. In saying that I’ve also found that most people are just not that interested in what others are wearing.

I have to wear trousers at work. I can attest women's trousers are so much more form fitting than guys. I also have the option for black jeans and femme jeans too which just emphasize the hips and derier.

I do love my skirts though. I have 3 denim, one stretch cotton and one pleather, most of them are pencil with one fishtail. I wear them all out. You do you honey there are gals that prefer skirts tooand can wear them with out over dressing.

I've studied the GGs when doing the weekly supermarket shop and it is much the same - they mostly seem to wear jeans or leggings (typically of the sports variety) with trainers.

I try to blend in by wearing slim fitting jeans (female but look unisex) and a pair of flats. I do sometimes go out wearing a black skirt or a knitted sweater dress but the fancy frocks don't get worn outside of the house.

I’m with you Rachel. I feel like wearing pants kind of defeats my purpose but I’m going to give it a try. Observing what ggs wear has lead me to this(don’t want to stick out anymore than I know I will) I just ordered a pair of dress slacks I plan to wear for my first trip out. They are boot cut with a kind of a flared bottom I plan on wearing with a pair of heels and a cardigan on top. Hopefully this will be a happy medium for me. It really does depend on where you are though I think. The supermarket or Walmart are on one end of the spectrum while a higher end department store is at the other. People dress according in most cases

Rachel I have pretty strong opinions on slacks when I’m out and about, I am definitely a skirt or dress girl. The caveat is, I own a nice selection if women's slacks and jeans I wear everyday in man drag. It gives me a bit of “me” even when I have to dress as a male. Yes I underdress every day, and some of my “shirts” are women’s blouses, sweaters and T’s. I don’t own any male underwear or socks anymore and my man shoes are Dansko clogs. Nobody notices and yet I am entirely dressed in women's clothes. That should be a sad note on “women’s” attire these days. I always get compliments when out fully dressed as so many women still appreciate nice clothes, skirts, dresses and feminine blouses as well as heels or nice sandals or flats.

walmart....  🤮. Yes it is unfortunately necessary to do some shopping there but any store chain that has a web page dedicated to “The People of...” as a humiliating example of what not to do is definitely not the standard to strive for. I many times get done with work in the middle of the night and stop for necessary grocery items and quite frankly am almost fascinated in a morbid fashion as to what horrors I will see. Go to a nicer store such as Dillards, Macy’s or Neiman Marcus and you will still see ladies dressing properly.

Don't worry if  you feel over dressed. My grandmother always said, “You can never overdress, others are just under dressed.”  She always looked nice and classy and was always treated with respect. As for “passing”, the plethora of ladies that have said it is about your attitude and demeanor are correct. Just own it girl!  Hope everyone is having a lovely day?
