This is aimed mainly at those who are "out" and still live a proportion of their life in drab. Of course it affects everyone at all stages so please feel free to answer.
When I came out there were so many changes occurred in my life that can impact on drab dressed days. The obvious like smooth legs nicer nails and caterpillar eyebrows gone but there's other things too. Some small some massive.
For example my phone screen and theme are now a pink theme, my fave colour. My phone case, no longer black, is an orangey pink. My wife told me as part of the deal I was to stop buying blue, black, kakhi, grey t shirts, shorts etc (definitely not in my increasing lingerie collection) and get a bit of colour injected into my life lol. She also got a free hand in home design and decor. We definitely live in a feminine styled home. Love it.
How about you?
Hi Kay
One of many examples of me being more me is now my choice of car.
My youngest went off to University last year. Gone is the big black seven seater family SUV. I now drive a cute powder blue mini with pink lighting on the dashboard and pink backlit door handles inside and out. I didn’t realise until the first time I came back to it in the dark and unlocked it, the handles lit up pink!
Love it

Superb.
Well I’ve done the same in certain areas as well. Yes my nails are a touch longer and shaped more feminine with a clear coat on my hands , regular pedicures with a light neutral colour , I keep my legs and arms smooth ( while body for that matter) all year long , my eyebrows are thinner and shaped , my lifted 4x4 is gone and I drive a cute hatchback. My mannerisms are much more feminine than years ago.
I am not out but I am slowly changing my drab style with different styles and colors. I told my wife I was ready for a change in colors and clothing styles. When I described the shorts I wanted, she came home with womens workout shorts and softer fabric tee shirts. It's wonderful.
I am trying to buy less drab colours, too, but shirts are a problem when trying to be subtle. I did it with shorts, to a degree, but the flaming pink ones will be worn only indoors, for now. 😁
The deep indigo blue ones (I love the brand new denim colour) with the turned up cuffs and the light olive green ones catch a few glances, though, especially with my long, hairless legs and the femme cut. I can handle that.
My phone case is a pink/yellow gradient. Before, I probably would have ordered something like a blue, although my last one is a red.
Hi Kay,
Changes that I have made for my fem self and to just feel a bit more girly while in drab, are my pierced ears, a few rings, trimmed eye brows and lots of shaving and lots of moisturizing all over. Not to mention the underdressing.
I actually like my drab attire and have not changed it much. I just let my femme part show through a bit. I have had smooth legs for well over thirty years and don't think anything of it. Few people have commented on them over the years, four I think in all that time. Mostly they comment on my tan which means they are looking at my legs and can not miss the fact they are smooth, waxed in fact. I wear shorts all year round, so no point in hiding them. I also wax my eye brows since I had a moderately bushy mono brow. I keep having my wax tech remove and shape them more and more, but I just do not have the brows to make cute and sexy. Still, it is nice to have them shaped. I also wear lipstick frequently, just a natural shade so it is not too obvious, but there I times I bolden it up. Lastly, I do love painted nails even in drab. I don't do them often, but it sure is fun when I do.
So, I am drab with a touch of femme, and love it.

Hadn't really thought about it before because most of the changes are subtle and hidden. I shave from the neck down all year, however, my legs only get completely shaved in the winter. Starting this year I'm only shaving my upper thigh due to wearing shorts. To shave any further down would lead to questions I'm not prepared to answer. I get mani-pedi's with my wife. I do clear on my fingers and my toes I get color in the winter. To do color during sandal season would again raise too many questions. I can say however that I went to a dermatologist this past winter with my legs shaved and my toes painted. I was a bit nervous but decided what the hell. I got compliments from the nurse on my toes, no other comments were made. It was a nice feeling. My progress is slow but at least there is some as my wife becomes more accepting.
XOXO

I don't paint my nails often, but have several times over the past few years, and have never had an issue. At most, I get compliments like nice, nails, or what a nice color. Most people just do not say anything. While still rare, I do notice more men (only a handful) out with colored nails. Same with shaved legs. I find I have to make an actual effort to determine if somebody has shaved legs. As I said, I have shaved my legs for 30+ years and it just is not an issue. I started due to cycling, and still have cyclist legs since I still ride a lot, but some day if anybody asks why I will be tempted to say "because it feels so good when wearing nylon stockings".
Suzanne,
I guess I have good genes in a way. I have never had hair on my legs or arms. The only time someone even said anything was when I was in my early teens. Some boy at summer camp said I had girly legs, which I did, and that was the end of it. It’s the only comment I have ever had about my hairless legs.
Since I didn’t even have hair on my chest a nurse once asked if I shaved it. I said no and asked why, she said if I did I did a great job 😆.
So unless people are use to seeing you with dark hairy legs to start with, yes that is a problem. Otherwise it’s mostly not noticed by the masses.

Yup, always turn it around on them. They may be asking näively, but maybe not.
I don’t really have the kind of tipoffs you describe but the part about struck a note with me, Kay. It’s been a big part of my SO’s happiness with our dressing “deal”.
My drab was drab, color-wise. It was sharp, dress for success, stuff, nice cut and all that but all in black, gray, and navy blue.
Honestly, I bought a pair of bright blue beach pants and her reaction when I first wore them can’t be shared here due to CDH rules.
So, it’s really just my clothes with me, if there’s any tip-off at all. I wore this new top to pick up my new specs the other day. It’s white with embroidered pink roses. The receptionist at the eye doctor complimented me, called the shirt pretty and the eyeglass fitter chimed in.
Now did they say pretty because they knew it was a blouse and that I was Crossdressing, or just because it is, or is maybe that the language is just progressing beyond handsome for boys, pretty for girls…?
Almost always underdressed with panties and a bra, silver chain on my wrist, smooth legs and armpits. Red toenails and beginning to use clear matte topcoat on my fingers due to brittle nails. Love the winter season when I will also wear nylons under my trousers and quite often also a bodystocking or a girdle and longline bra.
Taking hormones since September 2022 and having tender but very small breasts.
Kay,
I hardly ever have a drab day so there's not much impact there. But my woman's clothing selections have certainly changed. When I started, I went with a lot of black clothes (easy to mix & match) and drab colors in order to blend in. After 6 months, I started getting more colorful skirts, tops and dresses. My wardrobe is now very colorful with floral pattern dresses among my favorite. And my new car is a nice candy apple red.
