Do any of you ladies have any clothing fads that you are almost embarrassed to admit that you liked? Mine is those cheap, plastic jelly shoes from the 80s. Every girl I knew when I was in my early teens had a pair, usually several different colors. I remember staying with my cousin and aunt for the day when i was younger. My cousin wanted another pair or two of those shoes, and I had to stand there with her as she tried on several pairs... I wanted some for myself! Later on, I found myself trying on several pairs of her jellys at different times when I was at her house and nobody was around. I really liked the hot neon pink pair she had. I know they still make different types of jelly shoes, but none look like the ones I remember. I did find a vintage pair in "like new" condition on ebay a couple of years ago, and they fit me like my cousin's used to. A little tight but workable. And when I take them off, the tell-tale jelly shoe imprint stays on my feet for several minutes... so I have to be careful when I wear them. Anybody else into a fad that has since fallen by the wayside?
For me, it was all about pastel shades of pantyhose. The Fab 60's. Give me pink, yellow, lilac, red, and blue. Opaque was cool, but I loved the sheerer hose with the hints of color, if not stronger shades.
Well pantyhose for sure as I love them but cis women hardly ever wear them anymore. I also always liked jeans with pantyhose and heels. Still wear them today while home and to go out.
Oh definitely love heels, hose and jeans!
Not so much a fad but more of a basic. Petticoats should never have gone out of style.
Early in the 1970’s, bell bottom pants were a big fad. And I loved them. Then they disappeared very quickly, and were even the subject of some ridicule for a while. But to this day I still miss them.
I loved the 70's maxi dresses and was lucky to have a sister who wore them so could try them on. Now they are back in fashion and I wear them regularly when I go out. And , like Lorraine, loved slips and wear them under dresses and skirts.
I've never had an opportunity to wear a petticoat, but they definitely look like something I would love!
Aren't they called Boot Cut pants now?
The traditional "house dress" that housewives in the 50's to 70's used to wear at home when doing domestic chores rather than the very ordinary leggings and t-shirts that seem to have gained favour among the women of today.
There were different styles: some were "shirt dresses", others frocks either sleeveless or had short or three-quarter sleeves. Some had embroidery or scalloped trim, but generally they had utility pockets.
Recently, after studying websites, I had one made to my size by a professional dressmaker.
It's a cheerful, floral above-the-knee fit-and-flare style with turtle neck and short sleeves and has two utility pockets at the front (for holding clothing pegs, for instance, on laundry days).
Household chores become for me an enjoyably therapeutic past-time once I've slipped on a comfortable panty, thrown on my "housewife" dress and slid my feet into my low-heeled mules.
Love,
Katherine
I’ve never heard of boot cut pants. So I went to Amazon to look at their selection. Very similar in style, although I remember bell bottoms having even more flare. Still, I like that style a lot! I just might buy a few pairs. Thanks for the heads up, Michaela!
Platform shoes. There was a wide variety of styles to choose from.
Does anyone remember the aerobic workout tv shows in the 80s ? One that comes to mind is 20 minute workout.
I simply love the aerobic leotard/tights from the 80s. Yes, it is kind of ridiculous wearing pantyhose while working out, but hey, it was the style back in the 80s.
When I had enough money I bought a bunch of aerobic style wear. What people call yoga pants today, I had the 90s version, which was pure spandex. So couple that with the spandex aerobic leotard, it felt amazing.
Sadly I purged it all. And I am not willing to pay the vintage pricing on sites like ebay/etsy + finding the right size on top of.
Scholl's exercise sandals - the original ones, not the "knock off" imitation ones today. Both the wife and I had a pair. Fun to wear, comfy and stylish.
Hi Tiffany, I really love wide belts, which I know went out of style a while back. For some reason I really love them paired with a tight form fitting dress.
