A little context to start, my wife and I live in Canada, but she is an American.  So she has shopped at Torrid since they opened.  In 2015 Torrid they came to Toronto (Canada).  I live about an hour away from there.  Since then they have been expanding and stores have become closer (one in my city now).  My wife orders online from them a lot and what she doesn’t like I usually return for her (she works nights).

Now for the good part:

Torrid recently got this shirt in stores that she likes (and I love her in it 😂). So we decided to get it in different colours.  I called around to a couple of different stores to see what they had in her size.  I ended up having to go to 2 different stores to get all the colours we wanted.

At the first store after I had grabbed a couple, I was looking around and one of the associates came over and asked if they could get a dressing room started for me so I could try stuff on (I was in full male mode).  Now I do have long hair that I wear in a high ponytail and did have my finger nails painted at the time.  But I was pleasantly shocked that they would think I’d want try some stuff on.

Then at the second one I had a similar experience. I had gone straight from work so I was wearing my work pants(loose fitting with side pockets style) and T-shirt(very male looking) I had put the shirts on hold, so I told the associate that I was picking them up (under my male name)  she asked if I wanted to try them on first to make sure they were what I wanted.  Again pleasantly surprised.  They were all so very kind when asking and seem to genuinely want to assist me.

I can’t speak about stores in the US (maybe you American lady’s can tell), but the Canadian ones seem to be very accepting.

  • I’m glad to see some stores are becoming more accepting of the wide range in which people exist. ❤️

@jane2024 That’s great the sales associates suggested you try things on. I ‘have had the same kind of treatment at shops before. DSW is my favourite shoe store and a few sales associates there are always super helpful and also suggest I try on some heels.  One time I was shopping for my wife in male mode and found a red skirt for her and the tag said small but it looked really big. She came up and asked if I needed any help so I brought it to her attention and the first thing she said was. Come on and let’s try it on. Not sure why she thought it was for me but I liked the fact that she didn’t have any problem with it. Now some shops I go to always ask if I want to try things on as they know I’m a crossdresser and are super friendly and very helpful. Maybe the barriers about crossdressing are changing with the times .

@jane2024 Torrid is the best. Thier sizes and the cut is great for us CDs. Many of the tops are larger in the shoulders than most other brands.

I had the opportunity to work there on Sundays for 3 hours for 14 months. I was told I was getting let go because I couldn't give them enough hours.

I did try once to order online but it took so long to be shipped to me.  I have bought 100's of dollars of clothes there in store. The first couple of items was in drab, but the rest as Cassie, trying on most in the fitting room. I have had a fun couple of hours going in trying on mostly tops and dresses. Sometimes I would only buy one or two things and at least 3 times buying at least 5 items. Sometimes I am trying clothes on and doing a little dance to the music in the store. I fear singing along, like I would like to, because my voice would sound to masculine.

Hi Jane,

The Torrid stores I’ve visited in the US have been exceptional with CD’s and trans both in male or fem mode.

Sounds like you’ll be back very soon!

I have always had a lovely time at Torrid stores.  I have been offered (and taken them up on) dressing rooms to try on clothes as well as a custom bra fitting - not done that yet.  The staff at every Torrid store I have been to are very open to a crossdressing male being there and trying on clothes.  So sweet.  Have fun at Torrid.  Staci...

I have never been in a US store where trting things on was an issue. True, I live and mostly shop in California, but I have traveled across the US and have openly dressed and shopped in Little Rock, AR, Oaklahoma City and Salt Lkae Ciry, all conservative states without an issue, to name a few.

VS and Soma are other chains particularly receptive to CDs

I was in a store called American Outfitters looking at their Lingerie when a young male SA walked up to me an asked if I wanted to try anyrhing on. I had never openly shopped for myself at that point and paniced and said no thanks. All week I regreted it, so I built up the nerve to go back and try on some bras. The same SA was not working, but it was not an issue to trt things on and another SA set me up in a dressing room. It was a winderful experience.

I too have had good experiences at Torrid. One time I was en femme with my daughter looking for something for her. While she didn't find what she was looking for, I found some earrings that I bought. I gave them my phone number for the rewards points which is linked to my male name. They verified it with me with no judgement and I confirmed it.

A few months ago I bought some spaghetti strap summer dresses and a strapless bra to go with it. The dresses fit fine, but the bra cup was not sitting flat against my skin at the top. I brought it back to Torrid for a refund. They had no problem with the refund, but found a bandeau top that could work as a strapless bra. They asked me my size, found the top, and asked me if I wanted to try it on. I did, and it fit, so I ended up getting the bandeau top instead of the bra.

Customer service at Torrid is great. My biggest problem (that Jane alluded to) is that their brick and mortar stores are like closets with a very limited selection. They're more like an online store with a physical presence than a physical store with an online presense.  It's rare that I find something in their physical stores that I want.

Lucky you! I envy all of you, girls. Torrid has good merchandise

I have had really bad experiences with that store online. So I hate Torrid, although I keep receiving their mails since they made me impossible to delete my account. And I like their clothes but they treat me bad.

They have made me waste a lot of my time. And I don't like that. First they accept my order and then a few days later they cancel it. Systematically.

And despite having communicated with them so many times, we have not managed to resolve the problem. Finally I gave up and told them that they were nice incompetents. In response they sent me a satisfaction survey which I answered honestly.

The thing is that I have never had problems with other American stores when I buy my clothes and accessories. I also have had a good time shopping en femme at USA stores.

Sorry for taking the opportunity to vent.

Gisela
