Hi everyone!

If you thought this post was going to be about an outfit you can stealthily wear outside at night..... that's not why I made this post!

This one is for the programmers of CDH.

Can we please have a dark mode?

The white background can be painful on the eyes. Especially when logging into CDH while in bed at night in the dark. I don't know if anyone else has this problem,  but when I dim the screen enough to make the pain from the brightness go away.... I feel I get eye strain trying to read the words.

Does anyone else think dark mode is a good idea?

Hugs,

Autumn

@augustvaliant I don't know what's involved in that, but I might suggest a pair of blue blocker glasses. I'd not heard of them, but our company gave pairs to all of us and they turn the white into more of a beige - softening the glare a bit. I saw some on Amazon for as little as $15. Could be an option and also work on any site with a white background. 🙂

@augustvaliant

I'll make an educated guess that it's not possible to do this for individual logins.  It would be an all or nothing proposition if it's possible at all.  I don't see that happening, to be honest.

I think the best bet is to enable 'night' mode on your device.  Most have it.  This will lower screen brightness and change the color to a warmer white.  This will in turn reduce eye strain.

Hi Liz,

I did some digging on my Samsung Gal phone (galaxy), and I found out "Night" mode is a low light camera option. "Dark" mode is a systems option that I already have turned on. I played with the setting to see the difference. In most apps, including browsers it appears to change nothing.

I did determine my phone's lock screen is unaffected by the setting. With it on, my lock screen is bright, and phone dims when unlocked

Thanks!

@augustvaliant On Samsung Galaxy phones, the minimize blue light setting is called Eye comfort sheild. On my phone it is below the brightness bar and to the left of Dark Mode on the extended pull-down menu.

@augustvaliant I use google for my browser and it has a dark theme you can enable in settings.  For apple folks, Safari also has a dark theme you can enable in system preferences.  Your eyes will thank you

@michellemybell Hi Michelle!

I use Firefox and checked the settings. The choices were - light, dark, use phone setting. It was set to use the phone setting. I changed it to Dark. As it turns out phone was already set to Dark so no change unfortunately.

Hi Autumn,

Yes, having a dark mode is a terrific suggestion.

I can definitely see a benefit to a 'dark mode' setting/option. Probably take some serious coding though. I know when I'm in bed late at night and want to check something without turning on the lights, upon opening my phone it goes into night mode (which is the default option), which is fine for some apps, but all of a sudden I can't read others unless I turn off night mode and then other screens become way too bright.

@chloecHHo Chloe!

I played with phone and browser options and I completely agree with you. I have the screen brightness on auto most of the time. At night I adjust the brightness manually to dimmer settings. It is just that when it is dim enough to not hurt from the brightness, the words are hard to read due to.... poor contrast I guess? I have ordered blue blocking readers as Melodee suggested. Hoping it helps

I have a dark mode browser - Opera. There may be others, but that is what I am using right now.

There is no perfect browser, and some browsers are more perfect than others *, so don't ignore other browsers, to get certain missing functionality.

* Opera is not compatible with writing posts, so it is best used for reading messages. But at least you get the dark mode.

@harriette Hi Harriet's!

I use Firefox mostly and chrome sometimes depending on what I am doing. I haven't tried Opera on my phone, but I didn't care for it on my laptop. I am go to give it a try on the phone. I am curious to see what you mean by not good for posting. I know some websites work better on some browsers. I once tried to pay a medical bill on a hospital website and it just wouldn't work on Fitefox. On a lark really, I tried on Chrome and the payment went through with no problem. Weird.

@augustvaliant Yes, compatibility issues continue, even though a lot of second tier browsers are derivatives of major browsers.

You won't like Opera here. Editing posts suck.

Somebody suggested Brave and it is much better. It has a dark mode, too.

@augustvaliant Remember that if you have trouble logging in that I have to reply to a post first, which will pop up a login bar. Then you can login.

At least that's what I still have to do on Android. 🤕

I don't know of any browsers that don't have a 'dark mode'. I use Brave nd although I don't use dark mode, I know it is accessible by typing brave://flags in the address bar then searching for dark mode in the subsequent page. Other browsers will vary but can easily be changed.

@rebeccabaxter Hi Becca!

I haven't heard of the Brave browser. I have just made a note to check it out

@rebeccabaxter Hi Becca!

Stops all those annoying mid-roll and pre-show adverts on YouTube too and I rarely have to drop the shields to access any other site.

I use Firefox, that has a dark mode in the tools/settings/

Funnily enough, I set it back to light mode, yet CDH and most websites remain in dark mode. Now, that bit, I can't understand.

@michaela2001 on my Samsung Gal (galaxy) phone, phone was set to Dark mode, and Firefox set to follow phone mode . I think I might just try turning it off and seeing if dimming in normal mode is better or worse.....

@augustvaliant I will check on my galaxy phone & tablet for that, but it's on my desktop computer (win 11) where Firefox is remaining in dark mode, despite being set to light.

@michaela2001 my laptop is a MacBook Air. While the dark and bright issues are similar, when I dim the laptop screen I never feel like I am straining to read. It's only on the phone. Even when I make the text bigger.

I use dark mode whenever I can. It's much easier of the eyes. Both Firefox and Edge have settings to enable it.

@d44 Hi Fiona!

Turns out my browser and phone were on dark mode. I have blue blocker readers coming, and I am going to try Opera browser and maybe Brave to see if any differences. Thanks!

I have a Samsung android mobile. In Settings / Display there's a section at the foot of the page titled "Looking for something else?". One of the options listed is "Vision Enhancements".

Clicking this brings up a page of display options, one of which is "Colour Inversion". Selecting this gives a dark mode, and works fine on CDH.

Thank you Jacqueline!!!

I turned the Inversion on and then dark mode off and I believe this is a setting that will work for me at night in bed in the dark!

Awesome!
