I had my first wedding DJ gig as Beth on Friday. WOW! It was a very unusual wedding. Although they are a youngish couple, late twenties, they are self identified as hippies. It was outdoors on a farm. Fortunately the only animals present were a lot of dogs.
The Groom and groomsmen all wore tye-dyed vests and shirts with shorts. The five bridesmaids all wore tye-dyed sundresses. The Bride's dress was a long, flowing tye-dyed skirt and tye-dyed halter top with bare midriff. No veil but of course flowers in her hair. Colors were all a variety of blues, greens and purples.
The wedding processional was indeed off beat. The best man in his tye-dyed vest and t-shrit with his ZZ Top beard and the maid of honor in a T-Rex costume. She took it off when she got in position up front. The rest of the wedding party walked up normally (if you can call this normal). The last of the wedding party was his and hers dogs. Then the bride escorted by her father.
I was at the rear of the wedding area with my equipment. I was wearing a lovely purple flowery knee length ensemble with feather dangle earrings and low heels. I played the music throughout the entire ceremony, per her request, playing very softly during speaking parts and at gentle background level the rest of the time. The only loud music was the processional and resessional.
It was a long ceremony with a foot washing ceremony, hand fasting ceremony, poems, speeches of intent and ring ceremony. When they were pronounced man and wife they kissed and shared a joint.
I didn't have to move equipment as the social hour and dinner were in the same spot. Of course the planed dinner was vegan but the kitchen had a power failure and couldn't finish it so several people drove into town and brought back several varieties of fast food, the only vegan food was Chinese.
The bride wanted me to do the ceremony, social time and dinner music but brought in another DJ for the dance music because she wanted a club vibe with a more modern feel. She didn't think I could get the crowd jumping. I set up my equipment in the dance area so he could use my light show as he didn't have any lights.
I did a warm up set while he was setting up, I had a good crowd on the floor then I turned it over to him. As I expected only a few kept dancing and the rest sat down to listen to this club DJ perform. As the evening wore on guests started requesting more traditional dance music which he didn't have. Finally he looked at me in frustration, I said "I got this" and took over. I played modern dance music the rest of the night. At one point the bride came up to thank the other DJ for the great music. He told her "It's not me, it's Beth." Her look of confusion, shock and wonder was priceless. I just smiled. Twenty years of experience and I can out DJ any kid with his computer and mash music.
Overall, it was a great day. I was wholly accepted as Beth, I was complemented many times for my outfit and also for my overall appearance, even my makeup got compliments. For my DJ work I received lots of thanks, even those that were fans of the other DJ loved my work. (I'm going to break my arm patting my back).
Prior to this show I had considered hanging it up but now I'm recharged. I do understand that shows for a cd will be few but that's ok.

That's really great, Beth! It sounds like a day to frame and hang on the wall. It sounds like you did a wonderful job, and are justifiably proud. We're all proud of you too.

Congrats on a successful gig!
What a wonderful story and experience, Beth!
They say you're only as good as your last gig, and it sounds like you smashed it out of the park!

Yes, DJ Beth will keep going. I have to make adjustments to accommodate the arthritis but I can still do it. Arrive super early and take my time setting up. No more carrying the equipment by hand, use a cart or pay a kid to help. Use wrist braces to strengthen the hands, use a small ladder for set up so I don't reach over my head. Take pain medication at the end of the show to stay ahead of the pain. Exercise every day to stay flexible.
I'm still going on my quest to be the oldest DJ.

We’ll done you. I’m an ex soundy soI know about load ins and outs on a slightly bigger scale. The thought of being up a 20 foot ladder in a skirt. Mmm maybe not. Glad you showed the young lad how to keep the dance floor full.
only stop when you have to but don’t be afraid to say no more. It’s hard but you need to look-after your self and stop before you can’t do anything.
A winner in the 'Battle of the D.J's'. Good job you were there and accepted in more ways than one. What a great experience for you.
