I am wondering what your opinion is if there are more British cross dressers than American cross dressers on this site. Or, if in general, cross dressing is more accepted in Great Britain than here, and if so why? I know there is a long history of British comedies that featured cross dressing from Monty Python to Benny Hill and beyond. Just curious as to your opinion

@maureen76

As a percentage of the population, I suspect the numbers are similar.  The US has around 5x the population of the UK, so I would expect the total number of CDs in the US to be correspondingly higher.

As for acceptance, I think it varies from region to region.  Some parts of the US and UK are very accepting.  Others not so much.  Cities tend to be more accepting than rural areas in both places.

@maureen76 - I think we should each form an orderly queue and see which is the longest. Happy Woman Face

@sunnyday without looking, I suspect that you're from the UK given the use of the word "queue". Laugh Cry

@katie71 - you guessed. And if queueing was in the Olympics, we'd win by a mile, or an hour or two - whichever was the unit of assessment.

@sunnyday no contest that the UK has queueing down to an art. That's why it and softball aren't in the games, people hated knowing they couldn't win LOL.

@maureen76 well l am from Australia and l know in regional areas people are pretty strict and not open with their minds. However it's a good question and l would say it would be very close on a percentage basis but in numbers l would think the u.s.a would have higher numbers

@maureen76 At a guess I would say there would be more in the US just based on population density. By density of topic posting though, I think we in the UK are punching well above our weight so maybe that gives a skewed impression. Not having experience of the US in that way I couldn't say whether it is more or less accepting. From what I see on youtube the US looks more accepting but from what I read in the media, less so. Go figure! Perhaps we are both the same. At the end of the day people usually are.

@maureen76    For a sampling, take total # from each country on site, divide by total adult male population of each country.  That should be a fair % representation.  To be unscientific, seems the English speaking countries. ( including Australia 🤭)  seem to have more on site.  Of course we will never know how many of our sisters live in places where they are serious social outcasts, and  who we are is punishable up to and including death.  Those are the ones we should feel for.  😥😪

@maureen76 No, there are 400 million people in the US vs. only 40 million in the UK. I was in London a few months ago and saw more CD's in public than I usually do here in the States.

Umm.  These are 2024 estimates.  345M US.  69M UK.

Yes, London has many visible CDs and trans women.  So does New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Minneapolis, and many other cities.

Many parts of the US and UK are among the most accepting places in the world.  There are also parts of both countries that are far less accepting.  It really depends where you are.

@lizk Ok, I'm not sure why the umm was used. My stats may have been slightly off, but my point was valid. In no way was I rude or attempting to be. I never said anything about the US being less accepting. I was making the point that we have nearly 10x the number of people or 5x according to YOUR stats, so that would almost guarantee that we have more CD and Trans citizens. Thanks for your response

In the US public crossdressing was illegal for many years. Those that performed in the public eye,we're called Female Impersonators. Many movies, TV shows had such performers. Some were big name stars.

I think Europe in general has done a better job with tolerance for the CD and Trans communities!

Hard to say based off the demographics of this website.. I also wonder how many men have desires to crossdress but never act on it

Hmm, interesting question.  I guess this calls for a correlation of the numbers of UK vs. US members on here, against our respective national populations.  Or at least, the proportion of them that most closely match the age demographic of our CDH population.  Could go either way, couldn't it 🙂

@finallyfiona

I did do the maths for that once, after @lizk told me the number of UK and US members on CDH.

I divided each by the national populations of each country, then multiplied by 100 to get the percentages. The results for each were extremely similar.

If I could actually find my original post it would be a bit more informative, but it's half past midnight now and I'm off to bed ...

I expect the numbers would tilt to the US strictly because of the volume - there are 5x as many of us in the world.

I'm sure one of the Managing Ambassadors could give a count though.

@melodeescarlet I was thinking numbers compared to population difference would give you a per capita figure

There are about 25,000 US and 6,000 UK members (looking at the members list). As always on forums, there is a core group of active and enthusiastic members and I would say, subjectively, that there are six times as many active US members as UK members but how many of each only the admins will be able to estimate.

Taking just the registered members (contributors or not) and the relative population sizes of the respective countries, it seems pretty even per capita.

It would take a bit of statistical voodoo just to arrive at a rough estimate.  Someday when I have nothing better to do (never) I'll see about that!

@rebeccabaxter Thanks for those figures---335 million population for US and 68 million for United Kingdom --- I am not good at math but I think US has 5 times as many people as UK while CDH has about 4 times as many Americans as Brits ---

I think the more realistic figures would be the number and ratio of active members. I believe the total number of registered members is over 45,000; if everyone of them joined in, that would make for a very busy place.

While some things on here are location specific, the general theme is international and I only check a members location if it is geographically relevant to a topic.

Maureen,

It’s likely to be quite difficult to answer as other have pointed out.  Many are deep in the closet and unlikely to admit that they crossdress.

My very unscientific assessment is that UK CDs seem to be at least more prevalent online. But I have no stats to back that up.

I would say there are more US cross dressers just due to higher population. But the UK certainly accepts it way better than the US. Now the Midwest conservative belts is the most unexciting while west/east coasts are more accepting

I would be curious how many are curious about cross dressing but never act upon it ??

@leah63 but although a larger population one has to compare what the percentage is in relation to the population difference --- I don't know if there are any stats on those who never acted on an impulse---but who knows now--there seem to be stats for everything now

To look at the U.K. from outside I can see the point made originally by Maureen to surmise the percentage is higher in the U.K.

In history there has been many crossdressers or 'Drag' on the stage. T.V. programmes that are put out for family viewing where dressing up was quite common but in either a drag way or parody. For entertainment there was plenty, it was fun but if you were openly a crossdresser or trans outside of the theatre or Televisual world it was a whole different ball game.

These days crossdressing or parody is quite frowned upon in this woke world yet, ironically, Drag is still revered and the likes of Rue Pauls drag race is high in the viewing figures yet is the most extreme parody of women going! Go figure...

At 2:30pm EST, the registered members list stands at...

USA Members 24,780

UK Members 5980

That only takes account of actual registered members who show their country. Then there are the odd ones out, like me, who are actually British, but registered here in the USA. And, of course, it doesn't take into account percentages of population size between the two countries. Nor does it show how many of those members actually remain active in these forums.

Thank you for those figures on CDH membership Michaela----the population of the United States is about 340 million and about 25,000 CDH members are Americans. The population of the United Kingdom is about is about 67 million and about 6,000 CDH members are Brits.

So the population of the US is about 5 times greater than the UK. Also the number of American CDH member is about 4 times greater than Brit CDH members. After saying all that, I am not sure what that proves---LOL---

My "guess" is that the number is higher in the US. Certainly in absolute numbers just due the larger population size, but also relative numbers...and here is why....

People from large, ubran and or more libersl areas tend to dress more, or at least admit to it. Here in the US we have many more liberal areas from California, to the Pacific North West, and the whole northeast. Then there are many liberal areas even otherwise conservative places. Think Atlanta, Denver, Miami, to lost just a few. While maybe not as open as some areas, even Little Rock, AR and Oaklahoma City I have found accepting.

There just more places to be a CD/trans, and when an area is more accepting it either draws such people who can be more open, or being around open people allows others to open themselves.

The more interesting question to me is, is the percentage of people with a desire/interest in dressing high or lower as a percentage in eithr country. I have no doubt there are a lot of people in very conservative areas who would like to dress, or at least try it, but are held back because off too much peer pressure or religious beliefs.
