Here's an interesting subject. I have heard from several CDers who would like to go out in public, they feel as they can now but only one thing holding them back- is that they have facial hair. They either don't want to shave or their SO doesn't want them to shave. The only thing I could think was that Amazon sells a over the head female mask. But, I am not sure how comfortable it would be, how breathing would be or how hot it would be to wear it. Other than that, I don't know how one could go out in public dressed and have facial hair.

Any thoughts or ideas on this subject?

Christina,

I too have a full beard and won't shave it off (made a deal with my wife for her support of my dressing).  I found a great mask company in Italy called creafx dot com that makes very lifelike and comfortable masks, but they are expensive!  I wear my mask  from four to eight hours straight with little or no discomfort (except in the summer).

Private message me for more details, and check out how it looks on me by going to you tube and searching for "Leah's Musings".

Hi Christina,

What a great question!  I have had a beard and dressed.  My gf loves the beard but the dressing habit is strong.  Going out hasn’t been a problem.  I’m in my 60’s so I’m not about to change.  It seems most don’t notice or don’t care.

Do what is you!

Christina,

I have kept my hair military short since high school and currently sport a neatly trimmed goatee.  My wife loves my goatee and prefers my hair short.   Neither, however, has stopped me from dressing how I would like.  I am not trying to be a woman, aside from having deep feelings about having my own breasts.  (Mine are naturally a B cup.)  I do, however, prefer to wear womenswear as opposed to menswear.  Given this, the clothes that I generally wear would be feminine in nature.  I make no effort to mask that I am a man, nor do I present as a woman.  My goatee would make that difficult.  Besides, it is not me.

I think it's interesting how quickly attitudes can change.....

I had a goatee and it was part of my identity for many years. My first makeover blew that away in one afternoon. I still grow it back occasionally. But shaving it off is easy now. I like how I look when presenting as a woman.

My girlfriend was pretty vocal with her displeasure. One day I asked her how she would feel if I insisted she never change her hair style. End of discussion. YMMV.

I couldn't do a mask. It would be uncomfortably hot most of the year (I live in SoCal). More importantly it would conflict with my desire to live as authentically as possible. That's just me. No disrespect to anyone that wears a mask.

Those pricey Italian masks look really good, Leah!

Emily,

I agree about the heat factor; it does come into play when I'm outside.   I tend to wear large floppy hats and recently bought a pretty parasol to try to keep the sun off me.   I still have to limit my time outside in the summer months.

I live in the Washington DC area and it can get pretty hot around here as well.

But, the discomfort is tolerable and balances out against me being able to dress and be Leah for a while!

And, yes, the masks are expensive, but if cared for properly they will last.

And they do look good!   A lot of the people I interact with are not aware that I'm wearing a mask.

I wouldn't have guessed you're wearing a mask Leah. I agree they do look really good! I wish I'd known years ago that masks this good were an option. I would have bought one. Back then I had no interest in shaving. Thanks for sharing your experience with the community.
