  • Hey girls.  Just saying for the first time I had my nails done.  They are medium in length and I can’t believe how feminine my hands look.  Wish I did it years ago.
it is a learning experience picking and typing.  lol.
but with my jewelry on my hands they look fabulous.   I’m so excited with this.
love to hear about your first nail experience.

@rosiebeth hey Robiebeth!  It’s one of my favorite things to do…and have!  I’ve done it many times as Emily which is great but the whole voice thing is difficult.  I’ve gone a couple of times as “me” and it was so much fun being honest telling the technicians why I was a male getting satin pink gel nails with tips with a chrome finish….they were always so receptive and friendly!

@emily2626 I agree.  It was fun.  I just got glossy French nails.  But I love how it makes my hands so much feminine and my fingers are longer looking.  Still mastering the the little things.  Like no choice but to type girly with them.  Lol.

@rosiebeth Rosiebeth, what a lovely experience for you hun. I'm not ready to go out and get my nails done. I'm really keen on getting some false nails but it seems a bit of a minefield. I have a lot to learn xx.

@rosiebeth My first pedicure happened by chance when I was a 23-year old student in a German city.

I was passing by a beauty salon in a quieter part of downtown when my attention was captured by some beautiful lace panties in the display window (they sold these items on the side, apparently).

By this time I had a well-established passion for lingerie but was then thinking they'd be more suited to the anatomy of my girlfriend than mine. (BTW, she soon after became my wife).

When I poked my head in the door to get a better look, one of the two beauticians came out from the back and engaged me in conversation and to my surprise, quickly offered me a pedicure.

I'd never considered anything like this before and had no idea what a pedicure would entail, but delighted at being so casually invited into this mysterious feminine "boudoir", readily accepted and was ushered into a treatment room.

Reclining on the pink treatment bench while my feet and toes were soaked, scrubbed, filed, shaped, massaged and buffed was incredibly relaxing.

All the while, the beautician (a beautiful and charming lady in her late 30's) chatted with me casually, even offering me a ladies' fashion magazine to page through while she ministered to my feet.

I declined the magazine, wanting to bask in this heavenly experience and also listen to the snatches of female conversation I could overhear from the next treatment room - where seemingly a lady client was being waxed.

Leaving the salon that afternoon, I felt I was walking on air and I became a lifelong afficionado of beauty salon treatments.

Back in my hometown a few years later, my now late wife (who was in on it), okayed my getting salon treatments and I one day boldly got my toenails painted in a thrilling shell pink.

For weeks I wore a strappy mule sandal at home so as to revel in the delicate, feminine look of my feet.

Love,

Katherine

PS I ended up buying two of those lace panties for my wife (one white, one black); the fabric and construction were of such high quality that they endured for years, a beautiful reminder of the time my wife accepted me as "the junior woman" in the house.

@rosiebeth If I have a photoshoot planned, I grow my nails out. I have tried false nails and was less fussed with them really. I found they were a nuisance for wearing whilst working. I am saving a set I bought for a particular photoshoot, but I prefer nail polish.

I'd love to get my nails professionally done, will need to be away from home, have a photoshoot and be able to keep the look for a few days.

Hugs,

Anna xx

@rosiebeth Rosiebeth, such a great question. My first time to get my nails done was a little over 3 years ago in late August. After reading so many of the stories here at CDH I wanted to have my next HUGE step. About a year earlier I had my hair colored, for this year I thought I would get my nails done, but I was scared to death. So I asked my niece if she would help take me to a nail salon.  She lived in another college town in my state, so went there for a couple days and she took me to a salon where I had a mani/pedi. I ended my with pink toenails AND fingers in my college colors. If you want to see, in my profile are my nails.

I had I-S-U-CY on my nails Go Iowa State, CY is our mascot. I figured that having nails that supported my team was acceptable in male mode.

@rosiebeth I’m an underdressed/stealth dresser. Painted toenails were my first visible femme thing. I’d been wearing panties for a couple of years, and decided on a lark to get a couple of toe rings. I was afraid to display them in public, but I liked them, and began to become more aware of my feet. I decided to try a pedicure, with color.

I absolutely loved it! I’d look at my feet and think “I have pretty feet!” It felt weird, yet satisfying to say that, and I began to wear sandals in public whenever I could, which I had never done before, except at the beach or pool. It was the first thing that made me feel girly. Even though I present mostly as a man, my polished toenails and toe rings are a subtle nod to my feminine side.

Since then, I’ve never been without polished toenails.

My first time was during an airport lay-over. I had time to kill so went into an airport nail salon and had a manicure. I just did a clear coat as I was traveling on to a ski trip in Europe. I was surprised how well the clear coat protected my nails. I have had a few mani-pedi since mostly with a clear coat, but just recently had a subtle but sparkly gel coat done. It is not too obvious unless in bright sun, but I am going on nearly three weeks and they still look great with no chips in the gel and no cracks or splits in my nails, even after skiing, which usually trashes them. They are starting to grow out, so there is an unpolished area at the base, but since the color is subtle it is not obvious.

I've never had a manicure, but I wear a clear coat to protect my nails, as I get older, I find my nails are thinner and much more brittle than they were when I was younger. Besides, I love the way they look.

Rosiebeth -

My wife took me for my first mani-pedi and it was an enjoyable experience. It was nice being pampered. I got clear polish the first time on my fingers and toes after joking with the technician to do black on my toes (it was Halloween). My wife told me I could get color on my toes if I wanted so the next time we went back I got red on my toes and clear with a pink tinge on my fingers. Now we go every couple months, I get the clear gel with a light pink tinge on my fingers and pick out a color for my toes depending on the time of year which are gel as well. At the moment I have a tan on my toes with pumpkins on my big toes. Soon we'll be going to get Christmas colors - I'm thinking a sparkly red for Christmas. As has been said gel nails are pretty tough and last a long time. Getiing a mani-pedi is a fun girly day out for us.

XOXO

Hi RosieBeth.  I can recall vividly the first time I had nice long fake nails.  I didn’t get them in a salon, but bought the Kiss Press on ones.  I was so excited the way they looked, that I never wanted to take them off.  I was also really nervous in case they wouldn’t come off too, but that wasn’t a problem.  Press on nails don’t stay on as well as glued on ones.  I can vouch for that too, since I’ve done both.

The last thing I want to talk about is when I had long nails on and really wanted to sleep with them on.  I wear contacts, and I tried so hard to get them out without doing damage to my eyes, but I couldn’t, so off came the nails.  I even wrote a forum post to see if any body knew how to do it, and Liz K had some nice advice, but alas, it only worked for me once and the next morning I found out that I had actually cut one of the lenses almost in half.

But there’s nothing more feminine than having really nice looking long nails on your hands , I can’t wait to do it again!

Thanks for sharing RosieBeth.  I'm slow learner because my much needed week off last week ended up being a wonderful week of firsts, including polishing my toenails.  Couldn't bring myself to remove the pretty pink and am now setting up my first pedicure appt to try to make them more presentable.  We'll see what the highly recommended tech at the salon says about a manicure.
