Here in the UK crops that have been Gene - edited could on sale here in supermarkets with in years. Public consultation here found overwhelming opposition from the public and businesses.
The government here are looking at changing legislation in favour of this technology. In other words genetic changes made to a plant that "could" occur naturally would no longer be classified as genetically modified and no longer have to meet GM regulations and can go general sale.
Argentina and Japan have approved similar advances too. Critics claim there is a risk of unforeseen health harms and contamination of other crops. Supporters argue it make plants more resistant to pests and disease, like cancer - causing acrylamide in wheat.
What's your opinions girls on genetically altered foods and DNA from a different species being introduced into plants and animals.
Will you buy it and try it, or you are not quite sure?

Sorry about that, Amanda. I suspect there was much back-door arm-twisting from my side of the pond to pressure you in the UK to accept our grains and such.

Money, money, money.... Sigh...

(No horns growing out of my head just yet, but I do have some strap-ons for when I enter The Forums, but just for defensive purposes! .)

I have a horticultural and farming background. People have been naturally selecting strains to breed with for thousands of years. Some become better, some worse.

I have no problem with some forms of edited dna in plants, such as creating a wheat more tolerant to rust, or low water cotton.

I do draw the line when the grain needs a chemical to be used to activate the growth, or fruiting of the plant. Such as some of monsantos creations need.

I'm now into heirloom varieties of organics for personal use. I hope to get to the stage where we no longer buy any fruit of vege from the shops, because we grow our own.

I haven't tried such foods, and I don't want to try them either.

I think I will stick to natural or organic food for as long as possible. Ok, I'm old fashioned, but as long as I have a choice, and before we are all brainwashed, no thanks

....anyway, I live on my own, why would I need an 8lb carrot!!!!!

I will....reluctantly. It would seem that our reach (as a society) has exceeded our grasp. We can do things like gene editing...but should we yet? I'm not sure. Much of the human genome is marked as 'junk DNA' which means we don't know what it does.Hope I'm not going to start growing 12 toes.....oh wait maybe boobies!

Oh Grace! I jest (joust?) of course!

I'm having the time-of-my-life on CDH! I had NO idea I was in such amazing company. I'm still a bit green around the horns, but I'm learning. And it's only been two weeks since I joined! Imagine what a year will produce (verb not noun)? Yes, I tend to go against the grain, especially when I'm on a roll, made from Canadian wheat!

I would not be too against it as if they are able to produce food in poorer countries and climates if the benefit outweighs the risk.

Hi Angela,
More research is needed I feel, eventually it will be the norm to eat these products.

Hi Mary,
My worries come when they start talking about cross contamination across crops, anything that without chemicals added is fine by me, you can't beat organic grown.

Hi Barb,
Yes money, the root (no pun intended) to all evil Barb, maximise profits.
No strap- ons allowed in the forums unless they have been genetically grown.
