I am not above thinking out of the box.

A new pair of shoes is really snug, overall. The length is good and the toebox is being massaged with a shoe stretcher, but if I  stretch the front too much, then my heel will slip out even easier than it does now. Stockings would be even more slippery, too.

So, there are silicone shoe straps that can be stretched over everything and it should comfortably keep the heel in the shoe, but most of them are clear. That isn't stealthy, but there aren't any black silicone ones that I have found yet, either. There are some bejeweled straps that can come in black, but they would attract even more attention.

So... I thought what about a narrow, black zip tie? Is that evil genius or do you have a better idea of how to keep a slippy shoe on our feet?

@harriette Cut pieces from a bicycle inner tube, they are round and black.

@rholtman96rholtman96 OK, but how would those pieces help?

If you are thinking of filling in the heel cup for more grip, the shoe is already snug enough that there isn't any empty space to fill. The problem seems to be that there is nothing there to grab my heels.

The circumference around the shoe and my arch, to put an elastic band around it, is around 11", so that would take a number of ponytail hair bands, for example.

I saw some elastic headbands for children that might work, but they were all bright, sparkly colours. I could try these at home, twisted into an 8 around my ankle, just to see if they work, then go on a hunt for some black ones. 🤓

@harriette

What works for me for shoes that is. Shoes with straps. This way I don't walk out of them. My slip on heel are either to tight for my larger right foot and to loose for my smaller left foot. So I'm strapping those puppies in. I do well with a Torrid woman's 12ww U.S. size.

I hope you can solve your footwear issues.

I have had occasions where the shoe is a bit loose (I may have needed a larger size because of width or availability), or one shoe is a bit looser than the other. I tried the heel pads to push the foot forward to make a better fit, but never had very good luck with it.

What I found works well for closed toe shoes is to push the foot back by stuffing the toe with poly-fill (synthetic cotton, think teddy bear stuffing, available at craft stores). This works because you can add as much or as little as you need, and the stuffing is soft on your toes. Too tight? Pull a little out. Too loose? Just add a little. The fibers will stick into a single wad. They fit the shape of your foot because they're so airy.

@alison-anderson I have enough cotton stuffing from medication bottles that I have filled up the front of the toebox of a few heeled shoes.

So far, it seems to work reasonably well and it compresses which easily takes the pressure off the front of my toes. I need more time to test this with more shoes, but  like it.

I have also seen foam toebox fillers for pointed-toe shoes, but my guess is that they will always be stiffer than cotton balls.

Thanks, Alison!

An excellent idea! Thank you, Alison.

With some of the medication that I take, the bottles come with stuffing.

I have used silicone toe protectors quite a bit, but even they have a few problems. Modifying them has helped, but they can't help keep my heel inside.

I have seen pointed shoe stuffers, but I am leary of them hurting my toes.

Harriette -

My advice would be the same as Allison's. My first pair of heel were too big (I used the advice of 2 sizes larger than your male shoe - didn't quite work). My wife stuffed some of the craft fluff in a pantyhose toe and put it in the toe box. It worked very well. Over time it will compress and need replacing but it's easy to do. The craft fluff is at any hobby store is fairly inexpensive and can be used for anything requiring stuffing. Good luck getting the shoe to fit.

XOXO

Literally just solved this problem myself. Amazon do a soft sponge adjustable toe box fillers by WLLHYF. They are shaped and worked perfectly, heel of my foot do not slip out. The heels are perfect bar this so perfect result.

I tried stuffing the toe with cotton batting and it did move the foot back slightly, but it didn't  resolve the problem which I think is because the heel cup isn't the correct shape for my heel bone.

I don't need to fill in the whole cup because that will force the foot forward and my toes are already tight enough.

I am still thinking.

Has the shoe go a strap or a buckle? In running parlance, the wisdom is to wear a shoe with your heel set right at the back of the shoe, then lace so you cannot slide forward in it. I've applied the same with femme shoes when they have a strap or laces.

I've been lucky with shoes so far as I've not had any that fit really badly.

@annaredhead I have a pair of Mary Janes and some others that come with straps, but the particular pair only has an outside of the arch, nothing on the inside of the arch, which is why I mentioned putting a silicone strap around the arch, if I can find black ones.

Go your local dept store. look to where they have shoe laces. They sell a self adhesive pad that you can place inside the back of your shoe that will help close up the gap that allows your foot to slip out of the shoe. Some people reccomend a short insole pad that will sit in the bottom of the shoe that will push your foot up to the top of the shoe. Helping it to stay on. You may have to try a few things to save a nice pair of shoes.

@robertaf I compared these problematic shoes with a pair of non-problematic shoes and the heel cup doesn't wrap around the heel bone enough to control the heel from lifting out, so I have to take them to Gino and get him to sew in a small soft pad at the top of the heel cup.

This is when I will find out if Gino is a good shoemaker not. 🤔

In the meantime, I am going to have to check out my headband idea, too.
