...why I should never make a change."
I was recently re-introduced to a song I'd first heard a year or two back - "Budapest" by George Ezra. It's a fun little melody that gets my toe tapping.
I was listening to it today via a Youtube lyric video - a habit I have to help me sing along better and avoid that dreaded situation where I'm singing the completely wrong lyrics 🤪 In doing so, the refrain to the song caught my ear: Give me one good reason why I should never make a change. My mind started really turning that phrase over again and again. I should need a good reason not to change. 🤔
The more I chewed on that the more I felt that most people seem to feel the opposite. That they want to go through life expecting that things will stay the same...finding some comfortable groove and trying to settle right into that. However, invariably something comes along and then they're forced to contend with a change pushing them out of that comfort zone. Trying to avoid that change... trying to keep things in their same, comfortable state.
When I was just a boy at the beach, I was getting knocked around by the ocean. My lifeguard father hauled me up and showed me the best method to deal with that incoming wave - don't try to run from it, it's far faster and far stronger than you. No, you lean right into that sucker. Feet planted, shoulder forward, brace, and cut right through it. I remember being astonished at how what had seemed like the most foolish idea, actually worked best.
We've spent so much time trying to make life easier, that I think we're forgetting how amazingly flexible and capable we are. So with my remaining time, I'm taking that attitude and extending it everywhere. When life is coming at me, I'll need one good reason not to change.
I'm learning, dad....I'm learning. ❤️
@melodeescarlet isn't it amazing when a song you've heard a million times sinks in. The "ohhhhh i get it now" moments. I also always love how you keep your father's memory alive with your andecotes its so sweet. 💋
My dear Melodee, what a lovely story and thankyou for sharing your little song with us all.
Kind regards Gwen.
Love this !!
One oxymoron I learned many years ago:
The only thing constant is change.
What a wonderful way to star this beautiful day! You are so right that most people's natural tendency is to avoid change, to seek comfort and solace in maintaining the status quo. And, in so doing, all they really do is set themselves for a constant fight because change is the natural progression of our lives.
You've given me so much to help me on my journey forward in such a short time. I'm leaning into the change I avoided for decades now. With each wave, I get stronger and more able to maintain my balance and to be able to face even bigger waves.
Thank you for that.
My wife and I often make up our own lyrics to songs. I'll have to share some of those with you sometime.
Much love,
April ❤️ (Where's that bacon emoji when you need it!)
It's a thing to find words in songs that we feel apply or inspire us in some way. The Reason sung by Hoobastank has some poignant lines....
I'm not a perfect personThere's many things I wish I didn't doBut I continue learning
I've found a reason for meTo change who I used to beA reason to start over newAnd the reason is you
The you in the words is the female in me.
Lovely interpretation of a lyric, Melodee. I've been very much like that in my life, taking inspiration or comfort from song lyrics that I like. On the subject of change, this wonderfully ambiguous lyric rings out
"Nothing's gonna change my world"
(From "Across the Universe" by John Lennon)

This post reminded me of a song I'd had in my playlist that I liked for its melody, never really thinking about the lyrics. One day, not too many months ago, like you, I saw them on a YouTube video and.....Oh my God!
The song is called, See the Changes by Crosby, Stills & Nash
And for my second reply to this thoughtful topic I have to veer off towards songs and lyrics. I was getting “dressed” a few weeks back and ‘Girlfriend In A Coma’ by the Smiths came on. I always liked the jangly rhythms in it but hated the ridiculous words. But as I listened and applied them to my crossdressing alter-ego I thought: Yes! It’s a crossdressing song for sure! I finally found Morrissey’s hidden meaning!
And you just know that Morrissey has slipped into a few dresses in his time🥰

Nice lesson, Melodee. You are so right. There is not a single good reason why you should not change. Thanks for share your thoughts.
I always remember a writing by Jorge Luis Borges where he points out that sensible people cannot help but change. So, to a lesser or greater extent, I change every day, because as Heraclitus said: "Everything flows." In a dynamic, sometimes crazy world, the sensible thing to do is to adapt to changing circumstances and try to live life fully in your own way and under your own rules, without submitting to the impositions that besiege us.
A big hug, chica.
