I have far too many clothes! 200 skirts!!! 40 dresses. Dozens of tops, jumpers..... It's a small mountain.

For the past few weeks,  most of this has been piled on the bed in what used to be my son's bedroom before he moved out. It's a bank holiday weekend here in the UK, and my son said he'd be coming home. No problem, but what do do with my clothes? Sort through them and get rid of what I no longer want, what no longer fits, or what I don't wear.

This has taken 3 days!!!! trying most items on. Yes or no? Bag or keep? 95% of this mountain was tried on and assessed.
At the end of it, I have SEVEN large bin bags of clothes. What is scary is the mountain doesn't look much smaller. This mountain doesn't include the clothes, mainly skirts, that live in 4 large drawers in the bedroom, and the wardrobe filled with longer dresses.

After three days of filtering, I still have far too many clothes. It's an addiction. I have 10 bras!!!!! TEN!!!!

I'm lucky to have a very supportive wife.
Normally when I have a clear out, the bags go to charity, but unless things change, I'll be out of work at the end of next month as my contract ends, and it's not likely to be renewed has it has for the past 2 years. This means that rather than go to charity, most of my unwanted clothes will be put up for sale on Vinted, a 2nd hand clothes selling site.

I have twice as many clothes as my wife does, and she has a lot of clothes!!!!!
One benefit of this exercise was that I found/rediscovered some wonderful things that I had forgot that I had or lost in the pile.

the pile is a magical entity. I can take something off and throw it on the pile. ten minites later, I can look for that item and it's gone. The pile has devoured it. The item somehow gets swallowed into the middle of the pile. This only happens with things that I am looking for. Thi gs that I'm not looking for are easy to find.

So, I've had a busy few days. It was worth it, and when/if things start selling on Vinted (that's a long process), I might gain back some of the expense of my buying addiction 🙂

@dazzler Wow! that is a lot of clothes & I would guess a pretty substantial investment as well. Hopefully you will be able to get some of it back on vinted. Just be careful not to spend all the profits on buying more stuff 😆 (easily done).

@sashabennett The vast majority comes from charity shops, so not as expensive as it could have been. This is the problem. I see a nice skirt, it's not a lot of money, cheaper than a coffee, I buy it. I see two items. Which one do I buy. Neither is expensive, cheaper than a sandwich.... I buy both! Do this a few hundred times over a number of years.....

@dazzler I find myself in a similar situation, easily done isn't it? There is currently a battle for wardrobe space between myself & Mrs B 🤣

@dazzler You are my kind of lady that is for sure! I have a pretty good pile on top of my dresser in my bedroom. I have a wardrobe, which is packed full of all kinds of stuff and my closet is quite bursting at the seams. I also have an auxiliary rod down in the basement with a ton of dresses, and nightwear on it

I am quite impressed by your efforts Cerys!  I regularly shop at a number of thrift stores locally and I would say probably 80% of what I have comes from there. The rest from Poshmark and eBay primarily. I’m not a brand snob, but I know what I like. Like you, I don’t sweat spending money on clothes because most of it is relatively cheap. I can get several pieces of clothing there for 20 bucks. Their shoes are a little pricey sometimes but Goodwill definitely has the best selection. I threw $40 at a pair of thigh high taupe Colored patent “leather” boots a few months back. That’s more than I usually spend, but they are deliciously beautiful and fit me perfect. I couldn’t resist lol. Plus, Goodwill has a 14 day return policy. If it doesn’t fit, I just bring it back and exchange it for something else.

I know I also have to get rid of some stuff. I had five large trash bags recently that went to the thrift store and I still have garbage bags full of stuff in my attic. I definitely know how the shopping thing goes lol

I wish you the best of luck in getting your pile under control.

Every once in a while, I will empty part of my wardrobe with those slinky little cowl neck, sleeveless shirts, or a dozen dresses and throw them in the bed with me. They are heaven to cuddle up with.😁☺️

@dazzler I feel for you hon. I know firsthand the issue of too much. My wife and I both have a rule now going forward. If we haven’t worn it in six months, off it goes to charity, very few exceptions.  That’s everything, polishes, costume jewelry, shoes, omg, shoes, lol, wigs, purses, the list goes on. We find stuff we bought with tags still on them. Bathing suits, are you kidding? Way too many bathing suits. In the end of the day, it turns out to be about five big bags of stuff every six months.

@dazzler The problem with Vinted is that it is too tempting to buy even more 😀

I have nothing like that many clothes but I've been having a clear out too over the last few weeks, I've been trying to get down to a wardrobe of "normal" women's clothes, work, causal, etc. and I keep finding gaps particularly with shoes, boots, tops and accessories...  back to Vinted

@dazzler For me it winds up being a case of getting rid of things bought on impulse or those that "seemed like a good idea at the time".   I find it hard sometimes when I need to face facts about something I found really beautiful or incredibly sexy that just doesn't fit my lifestyle.  It has also been affected by the fact that I am trans and my wardrobe planning is focused more on everyday outfits.   On the other hand though, I still like to have nice dresses and heels for wear when the appropriate occasion arises.  It's always nice to feed my inner sexy woman now that I have started to discover her!

The pile is a magical entity. Formed by the will of its creator, an extension of its creator. It knows what is valued most so those items get sucked into the interior to keep those treasures safe. I have to consolidate my piles, sort and purge. I've been told no more cloths until the purge is complete and everything put away. This after my wife ordered me a black n white plad skirt. It arrived yesterday. Then turned me loose in the women's department today. Go find a top for your new skirt. I picked a black one and a white one. How could I resist both at $8 each. Wait, isn't this how I got into this pile situation in the first place?

@sarahl If your wife is turning you loose to shop, then all you can do is obey her and do what you are told😁😁😁😁

it is absolutely not your fault that you have so many clothes. It is your wife’s. I would quickly point that out if she seems to bring it up lol.  It is a wonderful thing to have a supportive partner. After two failed marriages with ones that weren’t, I have one now that is. It is indeed a great thing

I know how the whole “pile” thing works too lol

Ten bras does not seem like much at all. I have probably twice that. I only have half a dozen dresses and similar number of skirts, but they do not even constitute a small mole hill.

@jjandme Hi jjandme

I have a variety  of bra's,  some for exercise,  some for dresses and elegant  ones for other occasion. Now don't  get me started with panties😆 or shoes, and dresses galore.

Living on a tight budget limits pile height. Some say that that is a good thing.

Cerys,

I know the feeling.  My wife and I culled our wardrobes about 18 months ago.  It took us several weeks as we were reviewing everything.  We were sorry to see a few cute things go, but there is no reason to keep items that no longer fit or have worn out.  I will have to say though that the end result was a positive.

We have another cull coming when we move into our new place in a few months.  A good portion of our wardrobe has been in storage for the last 6 years.

@dazzler

I sympathise Cerys, it's so easy to end up with a large  wardrobe (in fact, compared to my male wardrobe, it's vast!), if like you, one frequents charity shops.

I also suffer from The Pile! Despite my best efforts to keep it under control, it always develops.

Unlike you  though, I am absolutely terrible at getting rid of clothes and it takes me a good two or three attempts to actually part with anything. It's probably OCD combined with a 'I'm sure it will come in handy sometime' mentality lol

Anyway, let us know when you've got them listed and give us your Vinted handle. I love a bit of shopping on Vinted 😁

I've just culled my wardrobe too. When it gets to the point that you can't get the doors to close it's time to do something serous. I was surprised how many outfits didn't fit. So now there's lots of room for some new fashions. Yeah !!
