Hi Ladies!

Well, from an inexpensive and fun experience last weekend, I certainly know what dress size does not fit!  Therefore, can anyone point me to a good size conversion chart for dress sizes?

I'm thinking the next time I'll go at least a couple of sizes larger, but it may help to have some guidance.  Shoes and pants, even blouses are pretty easy, but dresses!

Thanks Loves!

Rebekka,

I really don’t think you’ll find that size conversion table (if you are talking converting fom men sizes to women sizes that is)

Pretty much each brand goes by hips/waist/bust measurements. And there are many variables to that. Is the fabric stretchy or not? Also, as you may have noticed, they just don’t contemplate shoulder width or a thick torso.

Still, you’ll need to do your homework srtarting on taking your own measurements while weating your body shaping garments. From waist cincherto corset, breast forms, hip padding, etc.

You can start by thinking that dresses size 0 are the equivalent of  24” waist. Two inches for each 2 sizes. A size 6” waist would be about 30”, etc. Bust size for the matching waist size will be about 1.3 to 1.4 times the waist measurement. Now, that is for misses sizes. Juniors are numbered in odd sizes. And the waist to bust factor is 1.2 to about 1.3. Same for hips. Smaller since juniors are less likely to have pregnancies.

Confused yet? Now lets talk dresses in small, medium, large, xl sizes. Small is usually size 4/6, medim 8/10, large 12/14 and xl about 16/18 misses. Oh yes, this is in the US only! Then you have womens sizes. From 14w to mostly 24w, or 0x, 1x, 2x, 3x...

1x will be more or less 16w, 1x about 18w/20w, 2x about 20w/22w...

then remember that unless you like your hip padding to give you a JLo like look, hips are usually not an issue. And some brands which are tipically “curvy friendly” will usually allow for larger hips/butts than chest-bust.

Sooooo... at the end, it comes to what most women already know... you will need to try the dress on to know if it fits! Keep all your receipts!

Love

hi rebekka. dress sizes....yes. a big bone of contention we me too. here in the uk, dress sizes are not always what they say on the label, well as opposed to different manufacturers anyway. this has caught me out a few times now, I seem to be a base size 12 but sometimes a 10 or 14 will fit. I suppose the obvious way is to try it on in the shop but if you shop online or you, like me, dont want to try it on in the shop for fear of looking different, then its impossible. as a rough rule of thumb, I was told by a very helpful member on here that you can use the add 20 theory. it works like this..... size 18 then add 20 gives you a 38" waist for men. so backwards a 34" waist for a man would roughly equate to a size 14 dress/skirt. as I said this is a very rough estimate but it gives you some sort of idea from mens to womens or womens to mens waist sizes. I hope that helps!

A lot depends on what shape you are, how long your torso is, and what type of dress it is.  For instance (and these are UK sizes) I can fit a size 12 maxi dress with spaghetti straps, a size 14 slinky sleeveless evening dress (with stretch fabric), but usually need a size 16 to fit my upper body, even though my waist is size 12 and hips are size 14 according to size charts.  I find a belt is useful to pull in the dress at my waist (if it is suitable for the dress style that is.)  If your arms are not slim then sleeves and armholes can be an issue.  As I have a long torso any short dress will hover around crotch level not mid-thigh!  Also fitted waists could be higher than your own waist.   Yes, it isn't straightforward.

I started by buying some pre-owned dresses cheaply from eBay in sizes 12 to 16 which taught me a lot about what works and what doesn't.   The one in my profile image cost about £2.50 (just over $3) including postage and it fits perfectly!

Have fun shopping!

Jasmine.

Enjoy the info, much appreciated!

I'll just have to get up the courage to start trying things on!

That will be fun!

If it helps, and I apologise for duplication: I’m just under 6ft, slim build and a UK size 14. I think US sizes are different however....❤️👗
