Laying Flat, a world wide movement of millions of people who have quit work entirely for a better standard of life.
The pandemic and working from home has made millions of people re-evaluate there chosen working life, and make drastic changes.
In America "The Great Resignation" as its called four million people in April alone handed in their resignations. In England here the numbers are rising many changing jobs, or creating new ones in home based "cottage industries" many more just simply drawing on savings and part time working. China too "signing off" is now known as "Lying Flat" "
So girls has the Pandemic or Lockdowns made you want to join the new revolution, could you afford to or want to just walk away to a simple life, or is there something you've always wanted to do other than the career you built years to aspire too.
Maybe you have walked, was it the right decision?.
I wasn't affected by the lockdowns and was lucky or unlucky depending on which way you look at it, to be able to work through them. Definitely not thought about ". Lying flat".
What's your say ladies?,

I have thought about it.  I had to go to work everyday through the pandemic.  I have had to deal with pissy people who are mad because I can’t get parts.   I really need another $500,000 to reach my goal but that might take about six years.  I am happiest when I am at my trailer house at the lake. I bought that 15 years ago for next to nothing. It is worth a small fortune now. I could never buy a comparable place.  I know that when the boys are out of the house in six years I won’t have to work so hard and can start to scale down. The boys have been asking when I can retire. I tell them that I can’t. The government won’t let me. The people older than me can’t work anymore and the people younger don’t know how to. I have to be the one that pays for everything.  That is until I don’t.  Sorry hit a nerve.

I'm already long since medically retired, so the pandemic had no real effect on me. But years of stress in traditional alpha male jobs while not being true to myself took it's toll on my heart. If others are waking up to the better things in life, then I'm glad for them!

I'm working with computers and been doing that from home for the last two decades or so, so this wave of more people working from home is more of people catching up to me.

Now quit work entirely - no, don't have that amount of savings, I still need to pile up a some money to be able to have an ok retirement.

Also, I can't understand people who looking forward to do nothing, I would go crazy, Sure I can take a vacation break from work or so but I would go crazy to just lazy around all day. I need to make stuff to feel alive.

As Andy Dufresne said, "get busy living or get busy dying" and to me sit in a boat fishing or be at the beach or some kind of party every day would be "busy dying".

I would love to walk away from my job (i call it a job, but its actually career. I lost the love for it 4 yrs ago).toxic management.

Unfortunately it has its claws sunk to deep into me for me to leave. There are things I'd much rather do that lead toward my dreams.

Someday perhaps

If only....

I work in Construction, long hours, stress, often away from home. Been working through the pandemic so luckier than some who lost their jobs and have had it tough. But been wanting out for some time. Just can't afford to. And I'm coming round to the belief the Lottery might be quite difficult to win.

Hi Kyra,
I know what you mean sweetie, certainly harder to make a decision to walk away if you have many dreams to fulfill and obviously money plays a huge part in any decisions.
Certainly admire those that have the courage to try it.

Hi Amanda,

Lol, looks like I've become fashionable again - I've being lying flat for most of my life !

Some simple guidelines:

- become frugal, you don't need half the S**t society insists you need to 'fit in'. Enjoy / make do with what you've got (sorry, trenders)
- become debt free! Put off for tomorrow what you can't afford today (sorry, credit card industry)
- work at what you like, not what pays the best (sorry, breadheads)
- mate wisely (sorry, divorce lawyers)

And spend time in the third world, see how the other 95% live. Reflect on it.

No, it's never that easy, and I've had to eat humble pie plenty of times, but a simpler life is a dream worth dreaming.

Hi Amy,
Yes money is the key issue in this factor in sustainability in long term.
As for the lottery, well we all do it, but if not in it you can't win as they say. But like any gambling you have to have a limit to what you outlay.

Hi Marti,
Your absolutely right we become obsessed with the need to have, fed by the plastic pay later mentality that keeps us on the treadmill of corporate manipulation.
If people step back and took time to evaluate they maybe mental health problems would begin to drop.

"Laying flat" - honestly, never heard of this movement. I suppose one of the reasons is that I make it a point to keep my life simple by staying clear of much the so called news of the day or what's trending etc. It is all so negative. Negative is not me. Tried social media for a while. Don't do any of it now, none, nada - except CDH. [Is CDH considered social media?]

In this way I am living the simple life for me.

Work - two views as I see it.

1) find something you love to do, do it, and you never will have to work a day in your life. I live here.

2) toil - as I listen I understand this is where many live. I am sad for them. I can understand wanting to escape; perhaps why they would join the "lying flat" movement.

However:

Work is good. From the beginning ordained by God. Work is an essential part of the human condition.

But toil? Not necessarily. Toil is what makes work seem bad.

Find a #1 for yourself and "lying flat" won't be necessary. This ancient proverb will become true, "the desire accomplished is sweet to the soul."

Ah, soul sweetness, I don't expect that to be found in lying flat.

Blessings,

Charlene

I have been blessed. Every job I have ever had has been an outgrowth of my volunteer work I have never worked a job for income; instead I happen to earn a living doing the work I love to do. The pandemic offered me the opportunity to work from home, which means I work in a horizontal position and dress as CeCe whenever I want to do so. It does look like I will have to return to office life in October, however.
I am enjoying my work so much at 68 years old that I have no immediate plans for retiring. Maybe I will switch to part time in a couple of years. To be honest, I do have a bit of concern as to when my savings would run out if I retire and I live a very long life. In the meantime, however, I will continue loving my work and my life.

I love this topic Amanda (even if its not what I expected, lol). I am currently taking a little time off from a long term, somewhat "alpha" career to consider doing exactly what you have described. I have been somewhat frugal for years, completely debt free, but like many of us in the US the issue of healthcare outside of an employer is a big question. I am single/divorced with kids at, or on the way to college and I would love to truly have time to myself for the first time. I would love to hear others thoughts on the topic.
