My wife and I had finished our morning shopping; it’s now time to drive home.

The multi-storey car park is accessed and exited by a couple of side-by-side concentric helical ramps in a dimly lit concrete cylinder. A very high central kerb means there is no possibility of crossing between the up and down lanes. The entry and exit gates at street level are side by side. There is no possibility of getting the two mixed up … or is there??? [I think you can see where this might be going]

We were half way down the down ramp when we were suddenly confronted by a car coming up the down ramp. Two ladies in the approaching car looked aghast as they realised their mistake. The driver started to back down but was instantly all over the place and in real danger of running into the outer wall. I put my hazard warning lights on, told my wife to get out of the car herself (in case someone coming down too quickly ran into the back of my car - I didn’t want her to be injured!), hopped out of the car myself and walked to the car coming up. Male arrogance bit coming up …

As I approached the car, my long skirt wafting around my legs, I did wonder “what are these ladies going to think of a male crossdresser approaching them?”. As I got to the drivers window she lowered it and I asked “Would you like me to reverse the car down the ramp for you?”, thinking it would be easy (how is that for male arrogance!!). Her response was one of utter relief and there was no hint of recognition as to what gender I might be presenting as. So in I hop and spend the next 2 or 3 minutes making a complete fool of myself as I try to get to grips with the complexities of reversing in a car I am totally unfamiliar with, in a very poorly lit enclosed helical ramp, very dark ramp surface and very dark high kerbs either side (maliciously designed to ruin your alloys), and with rear view and wing mirrors totally useless. I eventually fumbled my way through but it took several very slow minutes to get the car to the bottom and positioned at the entrance to the up ramp!

By now there were a lot of other cars backed up behind mine on the down ramp; several drivers had got out to find out what was happening. My wife happily explained that her husband was helping to back the car down (bless her), so by the time I got to the bottom I had a small audience of mainly male ‘admirers’.

Job done! I had a brief chat with the lady passenger who had remained with me in the car throughout and explained that I enjoyed wearing feminine clothes. She beamed with delight and told me she thought I looked a lot better in them than she would. We had a big hug and exchanged kisses on the cheek (I then had to wipe my lipstick off her cheek). After getting out of the car I had another huge hug from the lady driver. I am sure those two ladies had a great story to tell their friends over the following days.

Meanwhile, as for me, well … the whole episode filled me with an unexplainable sense of joy. I don’t know why, but I still smile with immense happiness at what was just a small incident where I was able to help someone in a rather fumbling way.

But that is Life as it Goes On …

@fembecky Hilarious story and well done for helping out. In either mode, I would not have done this, I am convinced that car park ramps were designer by the manufacturers of alloy wheels as a way of getting extra business.

Hugs,

Anna

@fembecky Rebecca, well done you.  Clothing does not classify how nice and helpful people are, actions do.  You are one of the increasingly few altruistic people in the world. Hugs Christine

Well done you, Rebecca! I hate multi level car parks, I'm always thinking I'm going to hit the sides. The individual spaces are never big enough, there's never any tea machines....

Even if it is a straight ramp which you have to turn onto, when I see the scrape marks on the structure at the side of ramps where other drivers have misjudged it I always get a little bit nervous.

And your observation is very true about tea machines. We used to have drinks dispensers in the office where I worked. Everyone was convinced they issued the same brown fluid whichever button you pressed 🤨 .

I've been a nervous driver since having my caravan flip over on the M6 five years ago. Not my fault I hasten to add, I never went above 60mph. It was the side draught from a passing Stobart behemoth that caught it and my wife tells me that it was my reaction that saved us. I've no idea, I don't remember anything after thinking, uh oh..

[You're digressing again] No, I'm providing background...

I'm a tea drinker so I always used to have coffee from these machines because I can just about stand bad coffee but never bad tea.

I remember sitting in a physics lecture at university ... I think it was about oscillations in mechanical systems, positive feedback etc. The lecturer used the example of an incorrectly loaded caravan to show how accidents could happen. I don't think I altogether followed the maths, but somehow it stuck in my mind. It put me off the idea of ever towing anything behind a car.

Having drinks at work was never the same after Health and Safety decided we were incapable of boiling a kettle safely. They only redeemed themselves many years later when they invited a third party to operate a real coffee and tea vending stall in the atrium ... but the queues were always very long!

And there are some very unpleasant brown fluids out there, so it's best to be cautious 🙁

Am I the only one reminded of a piece of the (very sadly,) late Douglas Adams' wit here?  A murky brown liquid almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea?

Hi Liz, the first image that came to mind when I read your reply was the legendary Batman and Robin scene from Only Fools and Horses. If you have not seen it I recommend searching for it ... it will acclimatise you to British humour before your fifthcoming trip over here.

But maybe you were thinking more of a Superman cape? Surely not ... a Superwoman outfit would be much more becoming.

I actually WAS thinking of a Supergirl cape!

I've not seen that particular Batman & Robin scene.  I'll look for it.

That said, I'm pretty familiar with Brit humor, having watched a fair amount of British comedy and having several British friends over the years.

And for the record, this will be my 'fourthcoming' trip.  Not 'fifthcoming'. 😀

@fembecky That was a very kind thing for you to do!  This is the kind of empathy that is sorely lacking in our society today.  Happy for you that it turned out to be such a great experience.

@fembecky Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

We never know what is around the next corner, it literally could be a car going the wrong way. 😳

What is important is how we deal with it. Well done, Becky!

This post will probably never be seen because the topic has slipped a long way down the topics list now, but ...

IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN Shock .

This morning, same down ramp, roughly the same time, got nearly to the bottom and found a car coming towards me. Thankfully the upcoming car was only just starting to come up and the driver managed to reverse down OK (apart from nearly demolishing the plastic bollard at the bottom - the one with the big arrow on it to show incoming cars which ramp to go up!). If I had been a few seconds later coming down it might have been a repeat of the previous week.

This sort of thing NEVER happens in this car park, so to happen twice to me a few days apart ... what is the probability of that. Has word got around? Do they lie in wait for me at the bottom? But at least I  had a different outfit on this time.

Happy Woman Face

Oh the fun and joys of crossdressing!

@fembecky  If it's happening that often (even if there were only the two instances you've witnessed), then it sounds like the owners/operators of the car park should be made aware that something is not sufficiently clear or unambiguous as to which ramp to use on entry.  Even just a line of cones where the cars are crossing into the exit lane to go up the ramp would do it.  That really would be 'car park superhero' 🙂

Great account of the day. Very glad you were able to help out. I said in another post I should move over the pond, everyone in the UK seems accepting. Maybe my SO would be accepting of going out together.

It is something I would have done; and have done in the past. I used to be a class 1 driver and can drive virtually anything, so reversing is something that comes almost as naturally to me as driving forward.

Good for you for helping out and even better that you did it en femme and with no concern from the ladies as to your gender.

Good stuff,

Becca

I am always in awe of those drivers of huge long articulated lorries who can reverse around impossibly narrow junctions, missing by inches the badly and inconsiderately parked cars that are in the way 😮 .

There is much ignorance amongst car drivers when it comes to HGVs. I once worked for Parcel Force in Reading and one day, on my return to the depot, the supervisor told me they'd had a complaint about my driving. I couldn't remember any incident. It turns out that a driver had reported me because when negotiating a large roundabout, my trailer had crossed into his lane. So imagine, my tractor unit is in one lane and the wheels of my trailer go into the next lane a little bit, Quite how this car driver was expecting me to get my trailer to follow me rather than cutting the corner, I can't imagine. I asked the supervisor if he had told the complainer to f-off, he replied that the car driver had been enlightened as to how large vehicles worked 🙂

I have a thousand stories like this.

One thing I learned during my career as a HGV driver and my many years as a motorcyclist, is that if you are riding a motorcycle, car drivers are trying to kill you; if you are driving a truck, car drivers are trying to kill themselves.

I try to keep that in mind whenever I drive a car myself and give everyone all the room you can.

Stay safe on the roads.

I imagine it must be a real challenge driving HGVs around the Cornish lanes. You have my deep respect!

Over the years I have found that if you behave courteously on the roads everything is much safer. Giving space to lorries drivers and (especially) school buses to pull out and turn almost always gets a wave of appreciation. Around here we often get groups of older motorcyclists; although they might not be readily able to acknowledge it, they always seem appreciative if you give them plenty of space.

With me it's bus drivers. I've often said that I wouldn't last five minutes in bus driver training school, first tight corner and there would be extensive damage to bus and corner alike!

That was a joy to read Rebecca. The admirers must have had a good laugh and, if they didn't realise made some remarks about women drivers. All's well that ended well.

Rebecca, what a selfless act, and equally with no sense that how your self presented would be anything other than accepted as read.  What a mini-adventure 🙂  Good on you girl!

Great story. Not only did you have an audience of the women you helped out, you had an audience when you got back to your own car.

Male arrogance? I think you've got it wrong. It's the male problem solving that kicked in.
