This must be a common topic here at CDH but I would like to add a little twist and hopefully get  some feedback. Of course we have struggled throughout our lives with the desire of femininity.  It surrounds us daily wherever we go. Socially, and at our workplace ,looking at ads in a magazine, even watching TV. We try to ignore and fend off the feelings else we cave in, feeling guilty and that it seems to control our lives. Like many of us throughout our lives there have been times of addiction, an ever present stimulation we feel compelled to act on.

As it turns out for me I may have chosen the wrong profession in this regard though I sure didn’t know at the time that it would cause me so much angst.  When I went to the Navy and was stationed on my first ship they made me a barber. That lead me to barber college where I received my license. Within a year and a half I morphed over with the education needed to be a ladies stylist as well to be able to make more money. Well, that worked out great except NOW I am surrounded by beautiful co-workers , some beautiful clients of course and finding my feminine senses on overload. To this day I can get rattled almost to the point of it being noticed by my clients or co workers. It is SO HARD ( no pun intended ) not to say things like , I absolutely love your dress and shoes!! THEN I have to do their hair! The finishing work sometimes drives me crazy! Blowing their hair out with the large round brushes, using the flat iron if needed, then running my hands and fingers through their hair for the finish and primping around or away of their face accenting their beautiful eyes ! OMG! So what do you do with this?? I have to remain as much as possible in male mode. I get through the day, go home to my wife and try to get distracted with other things. Or if I am very lucky I can be alone to get dressed up myself. Just saying. Misery or Heaven?

Love, Ellen

I say Heaven Ellen,

It must be hard but so much fun being with all the women and getting to fix their hair.

It must be wonderful being able to do hair.

I am surprised you aren't a full time femme.

That must be very hard! You must know a lot of women who would be happy to give you a full makeover at a minute's notice. I think I had that in my past and squandered it, but at least you know it's always there. I hope you get the chance to explore and feel comfortable, and with all the resources at hand it could go very well if you do!

Darling, it's whatever you want to make it.

If you've done time serving in the Navy, no-one will begrudge you your feminine moments - especially since you do their hair!

I say bring on the femme, a little at a time.

I would think your customers would love it!

The personal, feminine touch!

Love Laura

Thanks for sharing Ellen.  It’s like the Tale of Two Cities, it was the best of times and the worst of times.  I would say heaven because you get to be around beautiful women all day and help them look beautiful.  It would be nice if you could feminine’s yourself a little at a time.  Who knows, some of your coworkers might even help.  Enjoy your profession!

Hi Ellen,

It may be a little of both heaven and misery.  There are bad customers that take advantage of and use people.  They complain often and are not happy with the results of your service at the salon or your associates.  But you are in the presence of these beautiful women and the lovely associates.  Their clothes are beautiful too and you are surrounded by femininity.  As others have said enjoy and appreciate your associates and surroundings.  And perhaps you can enjoy a make over from your peers.

Unless you are still in the Navy and are styling as a side-line, I can't understand why you don't introduce some added femininity to your attire.  I mean, seriously, would anyone bat an eyelid at a male ladies hairstylist wearing some makeup or having painted nails?  You are in a profession which lends itself to displaying your femme side...embrace the opportunity! 🙂

Hi Ellen,

OMG GIRL!   CONGRATULATIONS!   You live in my dream world.  I am so deep  in the closet.  I read your bio as well and you are so lucky to be out to your wife and have here support and help you shop and dress.  I can only imagine.  On top of that you work as a hair stylist.   As a CD what more could you ask for.  As others have said you should take advantage and of your situation  and present a bit feminine, people expect that.  I would simply love to work in that environment.  I have had hair cuts in salons in bot mode and loved every minute of it.   I have been lucky enough to work on engineering teams with all women and absolutely loved that.

Enjoy the wonderful situation you have been blessed with you lucky lucky girl.

Love

Melissa

In my far-from-expert opinion, this boils down to your attitude; if you are trying to suppress your feminine side, you are facing torture and a losing battle. But if you embrace it, you could be in hog heaven. You have a career where you can freely express your femme side, with no adverse repercussions. You may be perceived as gay, whether you are or not, but that goes with the occupation. If you can keep it professional with your clients, you have an ideal job situation, and I congratulate you.
