It seems anxiety attacks can have a positive effect!
I work as a part-time assistant manager for a church-run thrift shop. I present as male at work as I am a closeted trans woman. Being called 'Sir' by the customers has been increasingly hard to tolerate. Today I had one volunteer repeatedly call me by my male name and several customers calling me sir. Add to the mix having to tell several customers they needed to wear a mask (the shop is small and can get crowded so we have a mask requirement for everyone in the store) and getting pushback from one of them all became too much for me and I spiraled into a full blown panic attack. In my head I heard the thought 'I can't do this any more.'
So I spoke to my general manager and told her I'm trans. Her reaction was wonderful. She asked me how I wanted to play this. We've arranged to sit down with the priest who runs the church next Tuesday afternoon so I can tell him and then we'll come up with a plan for how I can come out at work with minimum fuss. We rely heavily on volunteers and they're the ones I'm most worried about. I have no concerns about telling the priest as I already know this church is LGBT friendly.
I am so excited to think that in just a few weeks I could be working in my job as Diana. I will post updates as they happen.
Wish me luck!
Well done Diana!
All the best for your meeting with the priest. Let us know how everything goes.
Love from Stephanie 💖
Thank you. I will.
Good Luck, Diana! I'm so glad your general manager was open and accepting! What a great first step to a world where you can be YOU!! I look forward to hearing more from you and hope that you are met with only acceptance!
*kisses* tara 🙂
Thank you, Tara. I will definitely post updates as they happen. I still can't believe I've done this!
That’s fantastic Diana, it all sounds very positive. I don’t think you will need luck just a great plan in place to help you navigate the next steps.

Hi Diana, kudos to you in being so brave to come out in a religious establishment. It is very nice that the church itself is LGBTQA-friendly, but hopefully the volunteers and customers will be accepting as well. Hope it all goes your way, GF!

I think it's really wonderful that churches (some at least) are making the effort to become LGBTQIA+ friendly. I'm on a committee church to do just that. I'm hoping we'll be at a point where we can have a congregational vote to make that official in a few months. I'm so happy for you, getting to be yourself. I wish you good luck with the volunteers.

Diana....
Working in a thrift store....gosh, that's almost as good as a child working in a sweetie shop......all those goodies every day.
Regarding masks....every village has its idiot....
I do a LOT of thrift store shopping, and the volunteers in my town are always wonderful....they love to meet and greet people, and I would be highly optimistic that your volunteers will be glad for you.....with the backing of your priest and manager, i hope it's a smooth ride.......
and Diana's store will soon be an even better place to work in ......and visit.
Best wishes honey, grace x
Wonderful, Diana.
I hope all goes well for you, and you can move forward and enjoy your new freedom to the max.
Hugs, Regi👸💖
That was a huge step to take Diana and proud of you and the way your manager dealt with it. I hope it has paved the way for you to get further acceptance to be the person you were meant to be. i also hope that you able to be Diana at work too and, as Grace said, there will plenty for you to choose from in store. My best wishes to you.
This is wonderful, I love that you have the courage to turn a bad day into positive growth.
Diana, I'm sorry to hear that it took a panic attack to get to this point. But, congrats on coming out to the general manager! That is a huge step. I hope your meeting with the priest goes well. I'm going to be honest, I got concerned as soon as I saw the word priest in your post. But, if you have found an open and affirming priest and church, that's wonderful!
Good luck, and leave some of the nice skirts for us thrift store customers too! 🙂

Thank you. The plan is to talk about what steps to take to make my coming out at work easier.
Thank you. I'm hopeful most, if not all, the volunteers will be accepting, I'm not sure about some of the customers. I guess we'll see what happens.
