When we were out in the big city recently we passed by one of those nail bars you always see in the shopping centre. Funny how it always seems to be the Chinese running them, I wonder why that is? Anyway, I just happened to look in at all the people sitting there & Mrs B said, thinking of getting your nails done? The thought hadn't even occurred to me but once she said it I did consider the idea. As it happened the place was too busy & it was nearly time to head home anyway.

The idea had been lodged in my mind now though so when I went grocery shopping yesterday I popped into superdrug & picked up a pack of "kiss 200 full cover nails" & some blue metallic nail varnish. They were a bit of a bargain at £6.99 considering other packs were more than that for one set. So I sorted out which ones were the right size for me dabbed on the glue & stuck them on.

I normally keep my nails well trimmed as I am usually busy either cutting wood or fixing motor bikes so this was a new look for me. It didn't take long to realise that I could now do neither of those things! For a start I decided that I really didn't like the square look & it was darn near impossible to do anything. A bit of trimming, shaping & filing later & I got them looking a bit more classy so on with the paint. Again this is something I have never done before but looking at them I'm pretty happy with the result. It is still tricky to do anything with them being this long so it's going to take some getting used to! but some women do it every day so I guess it's just a practise thing.

Oh yes, I also forgot to buy anything to get them off with. Errrmmm...........bugger!

Sasha, my wife goes to a local place every two weeks to get her nails done. She's tried a few but never the chinese, or Vietnamese places, she believes they use superglue instead of whatever the right thing is.

She initially got false nails but she's been doing it for so long that her own nails have grown out and seem to be stronger than before. I think 500 coats of all manner of stuff have helped that. I may have slightly exaggerated the 500 bit 😊.

I tried false nails once but I couldn't do anything!

Enjoy the feeling ♥️.

@alexina Reading the ingredients on the glue that came with them, it is pretty much superglue. It certainly keeps them on but as you say, doing anything is tricky (including typing) 🤣 & I have no idea how I'll get them off. Have to say though, I love the look, it's my new favourite thing!

I keep my fingernails short to avoid the horrible twang when I pluck the strings on my bass but I'll happily apply varnish to them just the same.

I agree though, Sasha, the look is not the same as longer, gently pointed nails.

@alexina Allie, I keep my nails short so that it's comfortable playing keys in my various local bands (I play a bit of bass too). Hence the urge to wear lovely elegant false nails if an opportunity would only present itself. I'm a bit obsessed by this idea at the moment xx.

I've got this in my notes on glue-on nails:

'The adhesive that comes with the nails can be very variable. For consistency, buy a small bottle of a reliable adhesive such as Weldwood Contact Cement. These usually have a small plastic applicator. Under NO circumstances use superglue!

'Apply the glue to both the artificial nails and to your own nails. Wait for 15 minutes (or according to the instructions on the bottle) and glue the nail to the nail bed. If you try and stick the nails on before the contact cement has set then you may distort the nail as it gets momentarily soft. Once the adhesive has thoroughly dried then you can do anything, even shower, and the nails won’t come off.

'When you need to remove them, use a small nail file to pry into the corner between your natural and the artificial nail. You can then twist the nail off; usually, the adhesive will stick entirely to the artificial nail. You can save the nails and use them again. If you have difficulty removing glue-on nails, try applying a thick coat of clear nail polish to the nail, and let it dry thoroughly, before applying the glue-ons. This should mean that they come off much more easily.

'An alternative to prying the nails off is to soak your fingers in a bowl of acetone-based nail varnish remover. Given enough time, the acetone starts to dissolve acrylic nails and you’ll then be able to rub or scrape off what’s left. A nail scraper tool can be invaluable here.'

@ellyd22 Do these notes come from practice? Being a furniture maker I have plenty of experience with contact adhesive & I have always found it to be a stringy nightmare to use although I haven't tried that brand. Prying anything off once it has been fixed is not usually possible, as I have found to my VERY great cost (i.e. throw away a complete dining table) I was thinking the acetone bath myself to get them off when I get round to it. Right now I am loving them & I mentioned to Mrs B that I would be a bit sad to take them off. So keep them on then, was the reply. You know I might just do that.

The notes are gleaned from my cross dressing reference library.

It's just a summary of other people's advice 🙂

@ellyd22 Thank you. If I could add my bit to your advice then, I would avoid contact adhesive as a "safe" alternative to super glue. It is pretty heavy on solvents & difficult to handle. Next time out I am going to try double sided tape (another tip from the furniture world) I have some from a company called Tessa which is very grippy but might be easier to remove. Worth trying at least.

@ellyd22 Yesterday on of my thumbs fell off. Wait..... that could have been better phrased couldn't it 🤣 Let's try that again. Yesterday one of my false thumb NAILS fell off just as we were heading out to the pub so I thought it's a good time to try the tape.

Results - It worked (ish) I cut a piece & fixed it to the false nail & then pressed that onto my thumb. It needed to be held in place for a few minutes for the glue to get stuck properly but was sufficiently attached after that. As a quick fix for a couple of hours it was OK but isn't a replacement for the real glue. The glue that came with the kit worked great for 5 days & then I was able to tease them off without too much difficulty & no damage to my nails.

Hope that will add some more useful information to your notes.

@sashabennett I recently used Kiss Nails imPress press on from Amazon. They held well, were a good length and I was able to apply my make up with them on.

I highly recommend these nails. They come in a variety of fun colours.

@carolinecd306 Hey Caroline, these sound exactly what I'm looking for. They come with adhesive already on? So you just peel them off and stick them on? Sounds like heaven! xx.

@carolinecd306 That does sound good. Are the sizes OK? I found such a different range, especially the width. But then women do tend to have smaller hands so that's not too surprising. The thing with getting them in store is that you can check things like that.

@sashabennett I have small hands so had no issue. I’m in Canada. they were $11 so not a huge investment to try them.

Sasha -

How wonderful for you. I've tried false nails a couple times, the stick on kind not the glue on. They were okay to be able to add color and yes they do present a challenge when doing things.

My wife and I visit the nail salon every couple months. Most of the ones where I am seem to be run by Vietnamese, not that that matters. We get mani-pedi's when we go. It is wonderful to be pampered, we refer to it as a girls day out. I get clear with a pink tint on my fingers and either clear with a pink tint or color on my toes depending on the time of year. There have never been any issues going, I've seen other men there getting manicures and pedicures. You should talk to your wife about going especially as she was the one who brought it up. Out of curiosity what did she say when you put the false nails on.

XOXO

@cdsue Hi Suzanne, maybe I will suggest it the next time we are there, like you say, she was the one that mentioned it in the first place. She was complimentary on my varnish application, especially with my non dominant hand. She did say she would do it for me but I wanted to at least try it myself. I like the sound of pink, it would be a little less obvious than bright blue 😆

That;s nice that she was complimentary of your nail varnish application - the non dominant hand is a challenge. My wife has done mine in clear a couple times after I tried. She was the one that suggested we go for mani-pedi's. The first time we went I joked with the nail tech when he asked about color for my toes - I told him black (it was around Halloween) but told no I was only joking. When we got in the car my wife said I could have gotten color if I wanted - surprised me. The next time we went I got red on my toes and loved it. My wife liked it too. I'd sit around the house with my socks off just to admire them. Hope your wife agrees to go to the salon with you.

XOXO

Sasha, lovely to hear about your nail experiences. I just adore nails. So feminine and elegant. I had some lined up for my ultimately futile attempt to dress in May so I've still yet to try them myself. I love the oval ones. Square not so much. And I'm a bit old-fashioned. It's red for me. Pink at a push (see my makeover pics).

I know what you mean about not being able to do anything. When I had my makeover I was rendered completely incapable! The MUA had to literally dress me 😂.

I've seen other girls mention press on nails. Does this mean they come with some sort of adhesive already on? I've scoured Amazon but can't find nails like this. Ideally I'd like pre-coloured too.

Hugs, Chrissie xx.

@chrisfp99 Agreed, it is oval all the way for me. As for colour, there are so many choices that red seemed a bit too obvious to me. I recently saw someone on a reddit called malepolish who had blue on & it looked good. Now I have it myself & I still think that happily. I'm starting to get used to them now & I don't want to take them off so we will have to see how that works when I get back to kitchen fitting on Monday. 😏 Caroline O'Brien said she had found exactly what you were looking for in a reply to this post regarding the press on, pre coloured nails so maybe she can point you in the right direction if you look at that.

Chrissie, you get both, some have adhesive already on while there's also little, double sided stickies. I've read that they are easier to remove...quickly should the need arise 😊.

I love having my nails done. That being said I have only done it myself.  A few observations from me.

1.  IT is very hard to find the right size at the store, make sure you do not get petite because you won't find anything that will fit especially your thumb.  If you are lucky you can find a wide fit, but even on the internet I have found them hard to find.  Even with a wide fit the nails will not completely cover or fit my thumbs but close.

2.  Press on nails are terrible imo.  If you are just going to be dainty and have everything done for you it is fine but there are advantages to having well glued on nails and using that nail for different things, like picking up small objects off the table.

3.  The glue on nails will last a while but nowhere near what a manicure does.  I have always been able to peel off the nails after I glue them on, but I only glue them on when I know I will be full Stacie for a while.  It is a longer process to put on, the nails are not cheap and are not really reusable because of the residual glue when you peal them off and they get bent out of shape.  You can just basically peel them off.

4.  Way better than painting your nails and worrying about nail polish remover and getting every last bit of color off of them.

5.  As far as doing things with the nails, you will get used to it, I promise!  The hardest part for me are my contact lenses but I seem to manage.  Yes nails are scary but they are beautiful.  A good french manicure is probably my favorite.  We CDH girls sometimes have a tendency to push the female limits and look a little too standoutish.

My wife and I get matching pedicures and lately we have been getting gel polish which is tougher and stays on (they have to grind the color to get it off for next time).  If I ever have a bit more than a weekend to be Stacie or the time is right I really want to get a full manicure.

@staciebobacie I will take your points one at a time if I may

1 - There are a huge number of sizes & the pack I got has a variety of different sizes in it. The wide ones actually fit my thumbs very well so I'm very happy with them.

2 - This is my first experience with nails so I have nothing to base an opinion of press on's from. I had considered using double sided tape as an alternative, maybe I will next time, just to see.

3 - There is no way these will peel off. They are going to be tricky to remove but they were cheap anyway so no problem there.

4 - Getting nail varnish off may prove to be easier than nails. I won't know till I try so there's something to look forward to.

5 - I already am, didn't take long & I'm considering leaving them on for the rest of the week or until they have got in the way too much. We will see.

My finger nails are real and are kept slightly long, I did worry trying to get false nails off and didn't want to mess around with debonder or acetone.

They have been spotted the odd time whilst I'm in drab but as with smooth legs, most people won't notice. I tend to put coloured polish on them on an Anna day, on a drab day they are plain.

My toenails are normally painted (glittery purple at the moment)

@annaredhead I have tried to grow mine out a few times but sadly they keep breaking. I had never thought of fake ones until Mrs B mentioned it so I blame her, Also she is encouraging me to keep them on even when the weekend is over & we are back out in the world again. I sometimes wonder where she is going with these suggestions 😀 Glittery purple sounds lovely.
