Hey Ladies,
Just wanted to let everyone know that there is a new documentary about Casa Susanna. It was produced by PBS and is currently streaming for free on YouTube. I encourage everyone to watch it. It's informative and moving. Personally I love all things related to crossdressing history and have been waiting for the release of this film since last year. It didn't disappoint.
For those unfamiliar, Casa Susanna was a crossdressing retreat in upstate New York in the 1960s. People came from all over the world to visit. It was also the epicenter for an organized movement to connect crossdressers nationwide through a sorority established by Virginia Prince. The story was fictionalized with the Broadway play "Casa Valentina" by Harvey Fierstein in 2014. Which I haven't seen, but have read the script and it's very good. You can buy the script on Amazon, but I got it from the local library. The entire story would have been lost to time, if not for a bunch of photos that were uncovered at a flea market and published as a book in 2005.
You can watch the doc for free on YouTube:
Our very own Mona ( @yestothedress ) wrote this CDH article:

And I wrote this tribute article to Virginia Prince and her magazine Transvestia:

If you are interested in CD/TG history, then I think you'll enjoy it.
Marie
Sadly, it does not stretch itself all the way down here to the Land of "Oz".

Hi Marie,
Thanks for sharing this. Since youth I have always been fascinated by Crossdressing. Now that I'm embracing my desire to present myself feminine more often I find myself wanting to search for films, shows, and books similar to this!
I would love other recommendations if you have any.

If the video is geoblocked where you are then setting your VPN to a US server should unlock it.
Christine
And if you don't have a VPN now, there are plenty that offer a free trial period. Pick one, watch the video and cancel.
I watched it last night with my wife. We both felt it was both interesting but sad too. However, it was also beautiful and inspirational, in that, even back in the 50’s and 60’s, there were wives who supported their husbands! That was hard to believe. It’s worth the time to watch, in fact, I may have to watch it again when I’m not so exhausted.
Hugs, Jill
I watched it when it aired recently on PBS and I agree with you Marie, it was excellent. I found it so interesting to hear about the lengths these ladies had to go in order to lead their lives. And their emotion and passion still came through loud and clear all these years later.
Thanks to all who have tried to help with "unblocking". I use Firefox or Yahoo as my browser and I do have a VPN.
I'm reasonably sure the both above browsers are US based , but Istill cant get into the documentary.
Thanks for trying to help..
Caty.
OMG this is a must watch! I watched it last night. It is so touching and beautiful. What these women went through in their time was beyond courageous. Not to mention they were just wonderful people.
What a beautiful story!
Thank you so much for sharing this!
Love and hugs,
Becka!
I wish there were more films, shows or books similar to this. Personally, I've found very little. There is this Grayson Perry doc on YouTube, which I think is good. Also, I'm a big fan of the 1991 doc Paris is Burning which is about the Harlem drag ball scene in the 1980s. Mona just told me about a doc on Netflix called Eldorado: Everything the Nazis Hate. It's about the trans/queer scene in Berlin in the 1020s, just before the Nazis came to power.
Thank you very much Marie for sharing this very well done and rare look into crossdressing history here in the US.
Hugs,
Michelle
Just watched Paris is Burning recently, was really good and brought out all the emotions (also fun to see where so many of the references in Ru Paul's Drag race came from). Will be looking forward to watching these others too. Thank you so much for sharing them! 🙂
Thanks, Maria for posting. A very well done, emotional movie even if you are not CD.
I wonder if there are simialr sites/clubs in the NE USA?
Best, Marlene.
Hello Marlene,
Tiffany Club of New England should fit the bill... I went there a few times back in the late 80's and early 90's. They should still be going, others who read this may care to comment on same
Caty.
Thanks, I will look it up. Quite a distance for me though (from essentially Philly) but it may be worth it. Best, Marlene.
