Hi Ladies,
I've never posted in the forums before so here goes (about to lose my virginity). I love to read the obituaries in the newspaper. I think it stems from being a child and watching my mother, before even looking at the headlines, she'd go straight to the obits. She still does to this day. I love them too.
Todays New York Times had the obituary of Sandie Crisp aka Goddess Bunny of the underground scene. It begins "Sandie Crisp, a transgender actress and model who under her stage name the Goddess Bunny served as a muse to generations of artists, gay punks and other denizens of the west Hollywood avant-garde died on Jan 27 at a hospital in Los Angeles. She was 61." It was covid 19 apparently. She really lived an amazing life. It's worth reading about. I always think why can't I be so brave and live a life like that. My obit will be blah.
Also this week past another Transgender artist the DJ Sophie Xeon died in Greece after a fall. Only 34. From Glasgow. I'm not familiar with her music but it's just really sad.
On a happy note Rachel Levine a transgender lady was picked as assistant secretary for health. Not sure if she's confirmed yet and of course Mayor Pete will be the transportation secretary.
So am I alone in my morbidity or do you ladies like reading about the lives of those who've left us. Hope all are well and happy.
XX
Kim.

Its just another item if interest. No need to be hung up about it. At least if you are reading the obits you know you won't be listed there.

Oh so true Suki!

I’d be horrified to read my own obituary! Who would’ve written it? Not me that’s for sure...

Mostly I don't seek them out. Occasionally I will if I happen to leaf through them, or in certain speciality publications I read when one of the members or subscribers has passed.

My grandmother used to read them every day, and I thought it was pretty weird, but I was a teenager at the time.

On a similar subject a radio station in Northern Ontario a friend used to work at had a "Funeral half Hour", I think it ran from Noon-12:30 PM where they announced the recently deceased. This made some sense actually as the area was somewhat remote, and communications were slow, and if you didn't get a phone call you wouldn't know till the paper came out the next week.

No, most obituaries are not remotely connected, sadly many are really not the true personality of the departed, and it's always sad to read of a friend.

Hi Kim.

I agree with Celeste...wake up, check the column, if you're not on it just carry on with your day.....

also , I don't know about worldwide, but in English newspapers....everyone seems to die in alphabetical order!!!?

Smiles, grace xxx

I knew Sandie Crisp she was so nice to me. I met her at the Spotlight club in Hollywood  around 1991 when I was 21.

Not sure how this relates exactly, other than the topic of death, but it reminded me of the time when my wife -- who was then accepting -- asked me if I wanted to be dressed in girl clothes underneath my suit for the funeral when I died. It had to be the strangest question I ever fielded, and it might also be the most oddly sweet thing she ever said to me (not that there haven't been other sweet things, but this was oddly sweet). I doubt she would advertise my status in the obit, however! Lol.

I read them occasionally. Where we used to live in a small town, the obits in the weekly paper were one of the major items to read as the town was small enough that you probably at least had heard of the recently deceased if not actually knew them. We knew enough people including both morticians that if it was somebody we knew, we'd find out sooner than the paper. My SO and I occasionally go to their online sites as we do know (or remember) more and more in the listings.

Now in a much bigger community, I just barely glance at the Sunday listings and since we've been here not all that long, there is really nobody either of us know.  Now I just pay more attention to the listing of well-known celebrities, many now whom I've followed for years.

And of course my extended family, many cousins who are also aging as I am, 4 of the 12 (who were older than me)....so far. sad to say.

I read them occasionally because of my interest in Genealogy which I have been my family's genealogist and family historian for more than 50. years.

I read them. They’re great reminders to stop wasting your damn time.  Time is all we have and there is not enough of it to waste. If you want to wear a dress to the grocery store, what are you waiting for?

See you at the market,

Clara
