After nearly 40 years I've decided to sell my motorbike. So it needed a good clean up for the photos. After 3 hours of fettling & polishing I went in to wash up & looked at my hands. Noooooo....... my poor nails. The  varnish looked like it had been attacked by a family of beavers (or maybe haggis) 2 had lost most of it & 1 had broken off entirely. Its funny really, 6 months ago this wouldn't have bothered me at all but now I'm almost in mourning. Also I decided to bleach my hair over the weekend (what's left of it anyway) now I look in the mirror & I see Ed Straker from UFO looking back at me 🤣 Sometimes you just have to laugh at the madness of it all.

Ed Straker from UFO!  Wow, that takes me back.

Talking of making you laugh. Episode 1 randomly appeared on a satellite channel a while back, so I watched it.
It was amazing.

The moon base girls were applying make up whilst tracking for UFOs, and the end of their shift, they took off the mini skirts and long boots they were wearing to slip into something more comfortable.

Well, it was aired in the late 60s 😀

@lucyb112 Mrs B is an avid watcher of such nonsense which is how I know what he looks like. I must say the MB girls do look good though 😀

Hi, Sasha, I'm with JJ on this, take the opportunity to try different varnishes...but maybe not gel though, it takes ages to dry and just about as long to get off.

Good luck with the sale of your bike.

@alexina Thanks, I'll need it. FB is determined to list it as an automatic car for some reason despite me putting the listing right 4 times now!

Also thanks for the tip on gel polish, I've never tried it, I just stick to regular & as Mrs B got me 8 new colours & various files & tools for my birthday I have probably got enough to be going on with for now. The big question is what colour next? I was enjoying my glittery purple but that's wrecked now. I tried white before that, hmm, not my colour & pink before that which was a bit too subtle. Mrs B tried yellow but when she took it off it looked like she had a 40 a day habit 🤣 so I'll pass on that one

I have a gold varnish that looks great on my toenails but the same, long lasting effect when it comes off!

So many choices, what's a girl to do?

@alexina well I wore a metallic purple nail polish yesterday. After 3 lots of nail polisher remover, my finger nails still have a purple tinge. I was out meeting clients today, so hope nobody noticed.

@annaredhead Do you apply a good quality basecoat first? I've also got metallic purple on so I'll find out how well it comes off tomorrow.

@sashabennett no, this was just a single coat and it seemed to have quite a dense pigment. I use a non-acetone remover

@annaredhead In the words of a famous mythbuster "there's your problem" 😘 I use a basecoat, 2 colour coats & finish with a high gloss topcoat. for most circumstances this is good for at least 7 days.

@sashabennett Thanks' I'll try that. I rarely get to leave nail polish on more than a day or two due to work. What are you using as a basecoat?

@annaredhead The basecoat is called Green Origin it is supposed to be topcoat as well but I use a quick drying one called Eveline something (I can't make out the writing, it's too small) for topcoat. For colour I tend towards Diamond Luxe shimmer colours. All are from Superdrug & are on the cheaper end of the scale. I haven't actually tried any "name brands" but with the results I've had with these I can't see a reason to spend 3 times the price for fashionable bottles.

Good luck

@sashabennett Thanks. I generally buy nail polish from the Beauty Outlet and not expensive brands. the purple has faded a bit today.

@alexina Indeed, I did Mrs B's with real gold leaf once for a photo shoot. They looked amazing but a bit pricey for daily wear 😀

@sashabennett I gave on on regular nail polish because I could never get it to dry right through and harden properly before damaging it against something, no matter how hard I tried.  My nails were still pretty weak, too, I'd be as much at risk of breaking one as I would trashing the nice surface I'd created.  I guess all this is why gel polish exists!

I'm currently two weeks into my first professional gel manicure and it's much much better, but still not completely immune.  They seem fine for the washing-up, but I was advised to wear rubber gloves when using household cleaners etc. and you'd still be in and out of work gloves doing DIY of course.  The thing the shiny surface seems most susceptible to is actually heat, all the marks I've got on them have come from cooking, e.g. taking the foil off a roast or a baked potato, which I wouldn't even think twice about without my nails done.

@finallyfiona I usually do them in the evening after the trials of the day are over. Leave for 1/2 hr between coats & then it seems pretty robust. Obviously heavy duty bike cleaning & sanding 4 miles of Oak boards takes its toll but for normal use I've not had a problem, usually getting 7+ days in without any issues.

Also I'm in Scotland so heat isn't an issue 🤣

Beat up nails is just a great excuse to get a manicure. Turn lemons into lemomade.

Unfortunately, I am speaking from experience. I had just done my nails and was rather proud of the outcome, but then proceeded to do a major woodworking project. Between all the tool use, sanding and painting my nails were trashed. I started over, but thrashed them again. I just used it as an excuse to change my nail color several times over the last two weeks.

@jjandme I know what you mean. I'm currently making 27 drawers for my kitchen & dovetailing & sanding 4 miles of oak boards isn't ideal. Like you say though it's a good excuse to try a new colour. Now then...... which colour to go for next? Hmmmmm. 🤔

There were some sexy-looking ladies in UFO, not as sexy as Space 1999 though.

@rebeccabaxter I don't know about that, that's a debate that could run & run, could even be a full on discussion topic. I'd like to put a vote in for Jenny Agutter in Logans Run. Now there's (almost) an outfit!

Fake nails time? I found some wide-fitting ones in the drag shop in Brighton a couple of weeks ago.

@annaredhead Would that be the Birdcage by any chance? I've been meaning to pop in there for a while but every time I'm in the vicinity I always seem to have my brother with me. I do have some wide falsies which I got in Superdrug for a fiver. They are really very good but way too long for manual labour so I'm keeping them back for when I return to being a lady of leisure

@sashabennett Yes, it is Birdcage. A great shop, I love going in there. Brighton is full of amazing shops.

Nail-wise, I started by using some Rimmel Supergel with it's associated hardener. It's not actually a gel polish because no ultra-violet is necessary (apart from a bit of sunlight if you can get it). I found it did odd things to my nails though, they started pitting and getting lines on them. Even now, you can see where I used it as the strange striations have moved up my nails as they have grown.

These days, I use two coats of a simple nail polish called W7 with an undercoat. The undercoat I also draw around the end of the nail as this seems to help prevent edge chipping. The resulting polish seems to last very well.

@rebeccabaxter I've never used anything except standard superdrug stuff which has always worked for me. It seems all of these fancy brands & types are more trouble than they are worth. I didn't realise that you needed UV to cure gel, that seems like yet another reason to avoid it. I learned the end capping trick early on through my extensive youtube research, I also do the same with the first coat of colour & it does help.
