Being a young 53, I can remember like yesterday all the advertising and in store displays of pantyhose. From underalls, to leggs eggs and everything in between. My last few trips to NYC, I’ve noticed less and less women wearing any hosiery. And I can say over the last 10 years, there has been a huge decline in pantyhose being sold/worn.
I can remember walking in major department stores and seeing the aisles and aisles of hosiery. Walking slow behind my mom feeling all the swatches of the different shades and deniers. The mannequins wearing all the shades and brands of hose. Brands like Berkshire , Hanes, Hue, even the store brands like JCPenney, the hug-a-Lon from sears. Man those were the days. Nylon as far as the eye could see…. I believe this is where my fetish/love/ obsession may have started. Now there is barely one row of pantyhose and tights. The drug stores use to carry a huge display of pantyhose from leggs and hanes, yet no more hose. Maybe a cvs or rite aid will have some basic colors and sizes. Man I yearn for those days again. I can barley buy hose online anymore also. My favorite ones that fit well and slowly being fazed out.
sorry for the rambling
Thank you for the giggle!
I misread the subject line and read it as doo doo as in, well you know, poop.....instead of what I think you were referring to which is a dodo bird.
Thinking of pantyhose in the conjunction with my first thought struck me as terribly silly and I didn't figure things out until I read your actual post.
And yes, I remember those days fondly as well. Now you are lucky to find a small rack of some hose in Walmart/Target and forget about it in drug/grocery stores. Which, when I think about it, makes my first thought actually appropriate in that it is kinda sh*tty that you can't go have a fine afternoon just browsing the hosiery section at your favorite department store.
Sorry about the bird/poo confusion. Lol I should have stated “bird”.
You can’t find pantyhose or stockings at Kohls anymore. You can buy pantyhose and stockings at Target but the cheapest pair is $8:50. As wonderful as it makes your legs feel, I don’t understand why women don’t wear them much any more.
If you cannot find pantyhose you ought to look little harder. There are hundreds of types on Amazon and all the online women’s stores.
I simple don’t understand why you cannot find any???
I see quite a few brands of hosiery in the major retailers and also plenty online. I agree that the selection is diminishing as women and girls continue the path to wear jeans and leggings not a dress or skirt. If we were able to wear all that we saw when we were younger would we still have the same fascination?
One thing I have noticed is that there seems to be more dresses available this year and I get tempted nearly every shopping trip so perhaps the women are wearing hosiery..
This is just me theorizing; I love wearing tights (not a pantyhose fan as I easily create runs in them), and I have no issues with putting them on, but if I were a GG, it would be a serious hassle to put them on, and especially when nature calls.
Just imagine if you're wearing a skirt/dress and you have to hold the skirt/dress up, do your business, wipe, then wrangle with the hose back up all in a cramped bathroom stall. Not fun.
I would usually buy my pantyhose from Walgreens{we have several around here},but lately the No Nonsence brand and other brands are becoming harder to find in stock.I have switched to Amazon for my hosiery needs and very satisfied. Please give it a try.
Simply put, women are were fewer skirts and dresses these days, and wear more casual. ones when they do, hence the dearth of hosiery. They are still around and easy to purchase, but I do agree that there are a lot fewer in stores these days compared then during the golden age when every June Cleaver and Harriot Nelson wore them.
IDK. I see LOTS of fashionistas wearing hosiery these days. Vibrant urban spaces are where you'll find them. And on Instagram. Heck, Taylor Swift created a movement for shiny hose. So yeah, I think hosiery is actually having a bit of a resurgence. Some leading fashion bloggers and magazines are taking notice. It's not hard to find those articles.
And you know what? We're partly responsible. Sellers know a significant portion of their sales comes from "non-traditional" buyers. Sales data bears this out. It correlates with the rise in trans acceptance. Simply put, more of us are comfortable shopping for ourselves. There's also a growing number of guys that wear hose for health reasons.
I have ZERO problems finding hose in stores. Nordstrom, Macys, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Saks, even Target. Online the selection is even better.
Tights and pantyhose have not gone the way of the Dodo bird.

It’s the leggings, they’re the kudzu of leg wear.
Besides fewer women wearing dresses or skirts, another possible reason is that many women go bare legged. It makes sense in the warmer months, and having to buy a product that, if you're lucky, might be worn 4 times before having to be thrown out, is just not cost effective.
I buy my hose directly from the Hanes website. They sell some varieties in 3 or 4 packs, and sometimes have sales where they'll give a discount if you buy multiple pairs of packages. So I stock up when they're on sale.
I have a love for Hanes as well.
I've worn stockings and pantyhose since I was 4. Back then, they were hand me downs from female family members. One thing I learned early on was sheer to waist pantyhose was my favorite. I wore all the pantyhose that was given me, but I often kept pairs of sheer to waist stashed away for those special times when I wanted to enjoy my pantyhose experience and wear my sheer to waist with my short shirt dresses and enjoy the look and silky feel all the way up. Sheer to waist was an extra special look, feeling and experience.
So, at 13, when I pretty much outgrew the hand me down pantyhose, I decided to start buying my own and I was only going to buy and wear sheer to waist. By then, I knew a lot about pantyhose and where to get what I wanted. I had been to stores and enjoyed the large pantyhose displays. So many wonderful choices. There was a JC Penney nearby. I grew up on JC Penney pantyhose and was quite familiar with their styles and colors. I knew about Legg's in the eggs, and No Nonsense Light Support in the shiny silver package. I was buying and wearing mostly the JC Penney sheer to waist styles, Legg's Sheer Energy, and the No Nonsense Light Support. But every one in a while, I would see a new brand that I wanted to try even if they were not sheer to waist. I learned about a lot of these brands from commercials on TV and ads in magazines. I would see girls wearing the pantyhose and I wanted to wear that pantyhose too.
I could go into nearly any store and see racks and shelves full of pantyhose. I would so enjoy browsing them. And when I settled on a pair or pair I wanted, I would be so excited about my new pantyhose and looking so forward to wearing them.
Then at 17, when I began going out femme and went shopping for pantyhose, the thrill and excitement was very intense. To be wearing pantyhose while buying pantyhose was such and intense emotional experience. There was so much pantyhose all over.
Then, I guess by the end of the 90's, the big pantyhose displays seemed to get smaller. Near the entrance of department stores was huge display of pantyhose with legs in them upside down. Those thrills I got just walking into the stores and seeing that seemed to be shrinking. I sometimes had to look for the pantyhose. And the seemingly countless brands seemed to be shrinking too. Now I go into some stores and I don't see any pantyhose anywhere. I wonder if they are even being sold there.
Now if I see pantyhose I wear or want to try, I will buy all I can get in what I wear, then go try on a pair of the new brand or style I discovered and buy all I could get of them if I like them. So many brands and styles seemed to go away. It wasn't like it used to be. I could buy a few pairs, wear them, then go back and get more. Now if I don't buy all I can get when I can get them, I may never see them again.
I guess I was fortunate to begin my CDing in the golden age of pantyhose. Wear pantyhose, buy pantyhose, show off my legs in pantyhose. So many great thrills and experiences with pantyhose.
