Earlier this week I had a pedicure for the first time and after that experience I have made a decision. I am never trimming my own toe nails ever again. It's pedicures for me from now on.

This all came about when the daughter of a female friend was staying with us for a few days. We told her about Olivia sometime back and she has seen me as Olivia once before. She said she was going shopping and was going to have a pedicure and did I want to come too. I said I was happy to come but not sure about the pedicure as a) I might look a bit out of place as I'm not too sure how many blokes get a pedicure. And b) My toe nails were currently painted pink. She said well you better change and come shopping with me as a girl then.

So I got changed into some leopard print baggy slacks and a black top with some black open toe flat shoes. I put on my usual makeup, jewelry and my new black handbag and off we went. Why she had her eyelash extensions put in I tool a leap and had my eyebrows threaded for the first time and they looked so good. For those who haven't heard of it before (because I hadn't) instead of waxing to remove the hairs around your eyebrows they use a string that tightens and literally pulls the unwanted eyebrow hairs out.

Then it was on to the pedicure. Firstly the scene I just loved. Here I was being a girl in a massage chair chatting away to our friend's daughter in a nail salon with my feet in a foot spa with other women having their finger and toe nails done. I just thought this is so cool I am just one of the girls.

After they washed my feet it was time to trim the nails and push the cuticles back. Then they clean up all the skin all around each nail followed by washing your feet and the bottom of your legs with a exfoliating soap. Then once the soap is rinsed off they massage your feet and calf muscles with heated rocks. Then finally once your feet and legs are dry they paint your nails. In my case I had them done clear as surfing season is about to start and I am in bare feet and thongs most of the time through the summer. You then walk out the door feeling a million dollars. The whole process took about an hour from start to finish.

Do any of you regularly have pedicure's. I'd love to hear what your favorite part of process is. I found it made me feel so feminine as here I was as a female in a store that usually has only female customers. Looking forward to hearing about your pedicure experiences.

While I have read discussions on CDH about threading, I finally watched a video, to see it in action.

There is a cashier at a local store who has outstanding eyebrows. I had wondered if she had had her eyebrows threaded. Now I know that something else is going on. I really don't want to ask her about them and weird her out.

I totally understand Harriet you being hesitant to ask her about her eyebrows. However in the past few months I have realised that girl girls are very different in the way they think about that sort of thing to us. Just how we wouldn't hesitate to compliment another bloke on how shiny the paint is on his car and then ask what polish he uses, a woman wouldn't hesitate to compliment another woman on something about their personal appearance then ask what they did to look so good. So if you were dressed in femme I'm sure you could compliment her on how nice her eyebrows looked then ask her if she did have them threaded.

On the threading all it does is remove the stray hairs you don't want at all same as waxing or plucking the hairs individually would. They still then trim your remaining eyebrow hairs to a uniform length then brush them so they are all pointing in the same direction.

At some point, I will ask, but not when five or more customers are waiting for me to get out of their way, so that they can go home and start cooking supper.

However, this part was not described in the one video that I watched. This leads me to believe that her eyebrows had been trimmed and that she brushes them. I have the feeling that without trimming them they would be very dense.

@harriette What you say is exactly right. After the lady had done the threading I remember looking in the mirror and still seeing a few feral eyebrow hairs that were then trimmed with what looked like small nail scissors before she brushed the remaining hairs straight up.

@oliviac Yes, this woman's eyebrows look as if they are brushed up on some sort of natural angle, but for them to stay there and to stay separated, she may use something like hairspray to keep them in place.

@oliviac Have been getting pedis for year and absolutely love them. At first I was to nervous to get them painted there but now my nail tech is really great and I told her about Ashley. Now I’ve gone in with my toenails painted and get them painted when I can. I get the deluxe and the massage is to die for.

I had my first pedicure last year. After some surgery, I was unable to bend over and reach my toes, or lift my feet high enough to do my toes. I was never interested in polish on my toes, even clear. Also, after the winter my feet get callouses and dry skin.

I did another one this year (along with a manicure) before the Keystone conference, again to soften the feet and remove the callouses. I still didn't get any polish on my toes, but got clear on my fingers to act as a base coat.

While I like it when they cut my toenails since I have a hard time reaching them, it is pretty expensive to do that all the time, so I will save it for special occasions.

@alison-anderson I didn't mention the cost. It isn't too bad here in Australia. $35 Aussie dollars which is about $20 US dollars. Is that similar to what you pay in the US.

@oliviac At least by me, it was about twice as much. I believe it was $35-$40 US.

I go monthly with my wife and love them! I don't get color but was Ok'd to do so by my wife last winter but didn't. I probably will 1 time this winter. I think having my nails that lovely holiday wine colored red would be so lovely. I love the pampering. I love the leg massage and that now they know me. They even ask me if I want a manicure and if I don't go, they are asking my wife - where is your husband! I have been surprised by the number of guys getting them. it seems to be more acceptable all be it with super hairy legs. I am in the same boat as you are now. I only want to get pedicures. My toes and feet look wonderful and I feel better after the treatment!

@jjorgenson That was one thing that struck me similar to your experience, how nice all the staff were to me. Also I think that is positive that there are guys getting them. Anything where people are free to be themselves is a good thing.

Olivia, I got my first pedicure more than 30 years ago, a gift from a dear friend of mine, and have gotten them about once a month since then. I always loved how they looked after being buffed but about 2 years ago I went for the polish, right now I have French Tips, next time I'm changing to a deep red, seems more winter like. Do yourself a favor and get into the habit it's nice to be good to yourself.

@blondsherri I am going to take your advice and get into the habit for sure. You do feel so pampered. I had painted the pink on my own toenails and I didn't find that an easy process so for the summer months when I am mainly in bare feet and thongs when I have my pedicure I'll get them to paint clear and I'm looking forward to trying some different colours in winter.

I go for a pedicure every 5-6 weeks with my daughters. My late wife got me started on pedicures when I had a knee replacement, about 6 years ago, and couldn't reach one foot. It is such fun going as a family and that now continues, without wifey. Roll on Sunday, my next one!

I go every month and a half or so and I love it.   Makes my tired feet feel so much better and look a lot better.   The fact that it comes with a leg massage is an added plus!

I love em, I had been getting one just before i took a trip somewhere, usually in drab. This has been going for a couple of years now. Then earlier this year my wife started asking me if i wanted to go with her to get one. I don't think she knew that i had been getting them so this was a pleasant surprise for me. Now we go about once a month together.

My feet are so much better shape now.

@robertaf I had been focusing on how good the experience is and how good the massage feels I forgot to even think how good it must be for the health of your feet.

@oliviac It's hard to believe the difference it made for me. I had so much trouble with dry calloused heels. Not so any more.

Painted toes in sandals I love them too. Especially with a just above the knee summer dress.

My wife and i go once a month.  During the spring/summer seasons, I usually get my toenails painted as well.  The estheticians don't even bat an eye when I pick a colour for my nails.

I've noticed a few guys go in for pedis too, and saw one guy had his toenails painted.

However, if you want a totally different experience in pedis, try the fish pedis.   If you're ticklish it'll be hell but the fishies do a better job than any razor can in smoothing out the rough skin.

My wife told me about the fish pedicures a number of years ago. I thought she was joking. I do have very ticklish feet so I'd be afraid I'd jump and kick the fish. Having said that a friend of my wife agrees with you that the fish do the best job.

My wife and I were regularly having pedicures for 9 years now. Sadly because of inflationary costs and budget restraints after covid lockdowns we only go on an occasional date.

.I go in drab. But get my toes coloured..

That was the one thing I didn't mention was the cost. I had them done at this little nail salon in Chatswood and it was $35. I hadn't thought how much it would add up if you got it done every few weeks.

Have you ever had one while femme? I only ask as there was a real feeling for me of being included as one of the girls and I was wondering if you experienced a similar thing.

I got my first pedicure with color this summer and I was immediately hooked! I found it relaxing, and it was also so nice to be pampered. I love glancing down and seeing my toenails painted in my sandals during the summer. I go every 4 to 6 weeks.

My grandfather passed partially due to an open sore on is foot from a callous.  My father got pedicures regularly but did not take care of himself and had neuropathy so he succumbed to the same thing.  So I am very diligent with my feet.  In todays day and age men have way worse feet than women.  My wife and I go every two months or so and we always get matching color and often times gel because it lasts.  If people question me I have two responses.  First it matches my wife’s and it is her idea.  Second I ask, who has grosser nails….obviously guys, so they should be painted.  It’s better than looking at gross toes and foot fungus.  Noone has really ever argued it because it makes sense.
as far as my favorite part….gosh it’s all so fabulous, from the meticulous care to the massage to the paint.   Although it drives me nuts because I’m ticklish bad when they sandpaper my callouses I love watching the persons reaction.  They always laugh.

I love your reasons Stacie you tell people for getting your nails painted. I'm going to remember them for if I have to show my bare feet in the winter when they aren't painted in clear.

I found your comments really interesting about what had happened with your Grandfather and Father. I thought you might find it interesting that I from my mid 40's suffered from cracked heels and had the odd callous. I would regularly have to put moisturiser on my feet to stop the cracked heels. I have dodgey knees and a friend of my wife suggested I try taking collagen to help my knees. It's a powder and you put one scoop in your tea or coffee once a day. It doesn't taste any different with the collagen.

I have been taking it for about 5 or 6 months now. It has helped my knees a bit but unexpectedly my feet are now perfect. I no longer have to moisturise and my heels are just fine. Also my callouses I had on my feet are almost gone.

@oliviac that’s amazing!   I hope to never have that but I’m glad you mentioned collagen.  My grandparents were kids in the depression and my grandma would soak my grandfathers feet in epson salt and then cut off his callouses as best she could with a paring knife, the same one she cooked with.   So gross.  She was a frugal lady that was amazing.  She would make countless Christmas cookies and gave them to all the service people and family on the styrofoam plates that chicken comes from at the grocery store.   Oyveh!

I have had a few and loves them. Spending time doing nothing but letting somebody fuss over your finger and toes is wonderful. So is having a make over. Just spend an hour in front of a mirrior while somebody applies makeup is wonderful.

I just had a mani-pedi on my last of a month long trip to Africa. My nails were trashed from days and days diving in the Indian Ocean, doing game drives in the desert, and paddling rafts and canoes. I just gave my self up to two ladies, one on hands the other feet, and just melted in the chair for an hour. I had them apply a UV hardened gel in a soft white/silver that is subtle and traveled home with pretty nail fully exposed. It was wonderful.

The trip sounds like it was amazing. So does the mani/pedi with two ladies pampering you.

OMG - there is nothing better than a pedicure (of course there is but I think you understand).

My wife took me for mani-pedi's a couple years ago for the first time. I didn''t know what to expect and was nervous but it turned into an enjoyable experience.  I was the only guy in the nail salon but no one made me feel out of place. The first time I didn't get any polish of any kind. The nail tech did ask and I jokingly said black but was only kidding. When we got in the car to leave my wife told me I could have gotten color if I wanted. Then next time we went I got red gel. My toes looked lovely. Since then i would get color when it wasn't sandal season. This past year I threw caution to the wind and get color on my toes all the time. During sandal season I get a neutral color - tan or something similar and wear closed toe sandals when I go out, I do wear flip slops in the yard. I've had red, pink and tan on my toes. I've had hearts for Valentines Day, Snowmen for winter and currently have pumpkins for the fall. I think they are really cute and so does my wife.

We go about every 6-8 weeks for mani-pedi's. It is a fun day out for us to be able to relax and be pampered. As others have said it is wonderful to have your feet and legs massaged as well as your hands when getting a manicure. I only get clear with a slight pink tinge on my fingers. It costs us about $200 for both of us but we get gel on both fingers and toes. It is a bit pricey but and indulgence we allow ourselves.

There are times we have been there that there are other men getting mani's and pedi's. I think more people are aware of the health benefits of getting them done. I honestly haven't paid attention to whether they get color or not and really don't care. I have had a couple women I know ask me if  get my nails done. When I told them I do they said they looked good and wished their husband would get theirs done. I tell then I've seen other men in the nail salon and they should try to get them to go.

That is my experience and I'll never deny myself going to the nail salon. When I go I'm in drab as my wife doesn't want me going out of the house dressed. I do think it would be fun to go wearing a skort though. Maybe someday.

XOXO
Suzanne

@cdsue You are so lucky to have such a wonderful wife to want to share that with you and be happy to have your toes and fingers painted.
