As the Progressive commercials infer "Are you turning into your parents?" Specifically your mother! Do you find that you are emulating or turning more and more like your mother. Dressing as she would, listening to her type of music or picking up her habits. It seems funny but I find myself taking on some of her traits, such as listening to 40's and 50's music, dressing as she would and picking up other mannerism. Though I grew up with her and two sisters I find that I was more enthralled with her style and behaviors than that of my sisters. It seemed to be more feminine and romantic!

@genievive My mother was always very Stylish in how she dressed. Note that I did not say In Style. She passed away in 1988 and I have continued that. However, she never knew DeeAnn as my coming out was October 10, 2015.

Thrift shops, physical and on line, are perfect for me in that there is a broad range of styles and fabrics without the seasonal constraints. I could afford to shop in department stores, but 80% to 90% of my wardrobe came from thrift shops for the reason that I mentioned.

I would say that my mother and I were fairly aligned in our thought processes. She was an IT person, systems analyst and ultimately a department manager. Her interests were very broad. I am a retired mechanical engineer and I’ve said that working got in the way of pursuing my interests.

Actually I probably channel my grandmother more than anyone as I often quote things that she told me. She would tell me things like “Lies have short legs.”. Or, if there was someplace where she didn’t want to go, she would say “I ain’t lost nothing there."…

@flatlander48 Not so much dressing like her or like her music but I certainly look like her.  When I am dressed and look in the mirror, she is staring back at me!

@genievive Of her three sons, I look the most like my mom. Of the few pictures of her when she was young, she was a handsome woman. I have her father's/her big nose and pencil neck. Emotionally, I am certainly more like her than my father. I have no idea what kind of music she would chose on her own, beside maybe Anne Murray, because my father monopolized what was playing. This is a far cry from my varied tastes.

Would I look like my mother if I was all done up? I may never know. I have a hard enough time remembering her fashion styles, too, so there is no style being handed down from mother to, um, daughter. I remember in my early teens that she bought me a fairly bright green pants. Not your normal type of outer wear for boys in those days. I wasn't afraid to wear them, though. In the late '70s, I returned from Panama with some jeans that had multi-coloured strips of leather on the legs. Not your normal style of jeans in Canada, but I was willing to experiment. Who knows what happened to them, but I never got accosted for wearing them. I didn't hold back when buying flowery shirts, either, but none of this involved my mother or her style after I moved out of home. It was all me, baby.

@genievive  I was about to say I am nothing like my mother.  She was a farm wife raising 5 boys.  She was barely 5 feet tall and a simple woman with simple tastes.

Then it just popped into my head that i have been coloring my hair now for over 3 years and the last time I had my hair colored red (mother was a red head)  and I just LOVE my red hair and I think I'll do it red again in the spring.  I HATE MY GRAY HAIR.

@genievive in some ways yes. She always had shapewear and great lingerie when I really became enthralled with dressing as a teenager. And I enjoy wearing similar things - Vanity Fair Lace Nouveau briefs are still my all time favorite and that’s ALL she kept in her top drawer. It was pure bliss.

in terms of mannerisms, quirks, etc. I find I channel more from 2 girls I was close to in high school/college - 1 a huge crush I had for 2 years and the other I dated as a freshman in college. Looking back, I sometimes I wonder if I really liked/was attracted to them or if it was more I wanted to be them.

I don't have my mother's style. She was kind of a tomboy. The only thing that comes close is that for a crossdresser, I often dress casually, kind of androgynous so to speak.

@kimmes The tomboy style is so true with my younger sister. I sometimes think I dress more like a lady than she does. I haven't seen her in a dress since her wedding day so many years ago.

Apart from a few traits I am not turning into my mother. When young she dressed nicely and there was never a moment when wearing something of hers was not taken along with my sisters. Alas. like so many women who's style diminishes with age at no point would I dress like her now. The only musical reference would be Shirley Bassey a that lady has a voice and a style to die for.

My mother worked for an insurance agency in the 1950s & 60s, so she wore fashionable clothes, which included high heels, stockings, and many pretty dresses and skirts.  She had her hair and nails done monthly.  I wore many of her girdles, bras, slips, petticoats, and foundation garments.

As a young CD, I did follow much of her style but was also influenced by younger female relatives, as well as females in my neighborhood.  However, I do believe much of my mother's style influenced my dressing well into my early 30s.  Beyond that, I did start to develop my own style, which I believe was strongly influence by rarely being around my mother and being exposed to so many other females in the world.

My mother's music?  I have no idea if she ever really had any particular type she listened to.

Traits?  Yes, I still have several of her female traits.  She was meticulous how she applied her lipstick and makeup, and when wearing stockings with seams, they had to be perfectly aligned.  She maintained her high heels in good condition and took them to a shoemaker, when required.

I don't think I behave like my mother at all.  However, sometimes when I'm dressed I see my mother staring back at me.  It's uncanny and cause me to pause.

For myself, none of my appearance is anything like hers. I recognized that Melodee's look is a reflection of what I find attractive in women, not anyone I'm basing it on. Honestly, I've found it rather easy to sculpt my look because at my age I now know exactly what I like about a woman's look. Frankly, I don't know how women do it - just...trying to figure out what look they like. I'd be at sea. lol

I don't think I can resemble my mother when I dress up. When, very occasionally, I manage to have the time to put on makeup and dress elegantly, I am inspired by a model of woman that I like. Most of the time at home I usually wear shorts and sweaters or blouses and perfume. Little or no makeup.
