Hello girls ....
Good morning from England....
From Mon. April 12.....we are coming back to life....shops are opening, we can get a haircut!!!.....and a pint of beer.
Grace is a real ale girl, and it's been over a year since she has had a hand drawn pint of proper beer....
but there's so much more to a pub than just alcohol. They are a vital part of British community spirit and life, often the hub of a village, a meeting point. In fact some village inns have been bought out by the local community, actually owned by members of the village, just to keep them going. Some even incorporate the village shop or post office!!!
Darts, pool, cards, football, skittles and many more pub based games are supported by the patrons, many teams pass from pub to pub to compete....it's just a wonderful social way of life that had been decimated by the pandemic.
Then there's the food...some pubs are literally restaurants that serve beer....yet another way of gathering socially, that has been so badly missed.
Working for a living is something we all do, sometime in our life, and even through this disease many of us have continued to do so.....the problem is that everything we do on our days off, the " pressure release", has been taken away from us. A terrible hit to our mental health.....humans are basically social animals....the majority of us need that interaction.
Ok, it's going to take a long time to get back to where we were, shouting " one hundred and eighty" will probably not be heard for a while.....
but the doors will be opening, the cobwebs dusted away, mice nests removed from pool table pockets....and our brewing industry is ticking again....
and my local???...very small, fifty people and it would be packed solid!!...but apart from a wonderful landlord and staff.....any time I go in, there is someone I know, someone I can bore the pants off chat to, have a drink with....and socialise!!!
once again " dogs bollocks, old peculiar, hobgoblin and old thumper " will be a part of British vocabulary.
Thanks for reading this, just my rambling thoughts.
Grace. ❤️💐❤️
Lisa...
You actually said the old roger line...brilliant 😂😂
I could have listed dozens of beers and missed a favourite...
I've had old roger...oooeerr....the beer, the beer!!!
hordes of Scots crossing the border...mmmm
Hi Grace,
If I was over there, I'd love to join you at the pub for a pint and some fish & chips.
Eva
Oh how I envy you, girl.
We had a vacation in Ireland years ago, and visited pubs all over the island, Just loved the atmosphere, and oh my, the Guinness!!! my pick every day of the week,
We dont have that special gathering place here, and it is such a shame.
Hugs, Regi👩💕
My goodness Grace - no pubs or haircuts for a year... it's hard to believe as we have been living more or less as normal for most of the time since the lockdown last April.
What's first? pint(s) or hairdo?
I'm going out tomorrow evening for a meal and drinkies with some friends so I'll be thinking of you all hirsute lock-ins in blighty - roll on the 12th!
Pissed as a parrot tomorrow
Diana
I think I would have gone out of my mind if I couldn't go to the bar for a drink for a year, we were locked down good and tight for few months. Slowly things began to open. Each states still has its own rules, one being that you can't just order drinks alone food must accompany ( how that affects the spread I have know idea) I am glad you will enjoy next time I am in one I will toast to you.🥂🍻🥃🍺
I do enjoy a pint of Speckled Hen 🖤
We have a couple of "Pubs" here, or at least that's what they have on the sign, but they're not pubs! Every place I went overseas in my career, or most places, there's a Pub somewhere in that place. The best were in Hong Kong (Bull and Bear, across from the stock exchange), and one in Rota, Spain (can't remember the name, but it was owned by a couple, an American guy married to an English girl). This were awesome places. And the beer....I only wish I could get some of those here. Thomas Caffreys was amazing. Coors night the import rights to it and went import it anymore because it competed with Killian.
It's just as well there's no real pub near me, I'd be there too much.
B...Bridge... wait, no, I got it! Bridgette!
Nothing at all wrong with a nice pint of " speckled"...
Diana...we did have an easing of lockdown for a while when everything opened, but not for long. While I did grab a haircut, pubs were virtually unusable....segregated, no standing at the bar, meals with a drink only....not even like proper pubs, so I just didn't attend......
Stephanie, that sounds as reprehensible as when the Budweiser company bought out Lowenbrau U.S. They waited a few months, quit making the dark beer, then a few months later, quit making it all together. I would have dehydrated if not for Carlsberg and Heiniken sticking to their guns.

Yay...
loads of salt and vinegar...and a pint of old peculiar....one whole bloody night without a health warning!!!!...
Cheers xx
Thank you Laura....cheers x
Once a brewery is swallowed up by a multi national....the outcome is usually very predictable....London Pride was a wonderful pint....
Hi Grace and Gals in England.
Good Morning from NW Canada. Glad to see that You are reopening next week. The pent up demand will be overwhelming. We've been through a cycle of reopening, closures, reopenings. In Canada, it is the provinces that each do their own thing. Hence, lots of inconsistencies. Some provinces have no covid cases and some are in crisis mode. Even within our very large province of Alberta, some parts of the province have no cases, and while other parts have big numbers and still increasing.
My community had a low number of cases for a long time but I think the people got a bit too cocky and as I've mentioned before, lots of rednecks here who say "I'm not wearing no stinkin' mask". So we've been on quite the increase lately, too many cases in my opinion.
But hey, we have an authentic English neighbourhood pub, the Crown and Anchor. Built by an English fellow named Nigel and his wife (sorry I can't remember his last name, he past away over ten years ago) but the guy who bought it has been keeping it pretty true (although the new guy has brought in some new non-English pub food to appeal to the many Ukrainians, French and Cowboys in the community). My wife and I go once in awhile for a pint (usually Guinness) and the fish & chips. Next time I will try the Shepherd's pie.
Have fun going out to the Pub Grace. Let us know how it turned out. Big Hugs, Krista.
