Out shopping on my own in man-mode, I popped into a local charity (thrift) shop to see what women's clothes they had. Usually they have a load of dross. To my surprise they had a dress in my size (24), very nice one - navy background colour with a multicoloured small star pattern. I looked at the label - it was a David Nieper (UK), the prices of their dresses online is circa £150. The dress was hardly used and in good condition for the price of just £5. I couldn't get to the till quick enough .. 😀
Whats your recent Best Buy ?
About a year ago I went thrift store shopping the first time to the local Goodwill and found 5 wonderful Calvin Klein dresses in my size for around $7 each. I'm guessing that they were all donated by the same lady. i've been back several times since and found a few nice things but nothing that compares with that score.
I get a load of stuff on Temu, always cheap, if not always good quality, however, I have bought three very nice dresses from them and four wigs, oh, and a gorgeous pair of knee-length boots with 3.5" heels (although they weren't all that cheap).
Found a beautiful blue dress in my size at Goodwill with a Torrid label in it, perfect for wearing a large petticoat under it.
What made it so special was the price. It was first reduced by a color coded label and again by the fact it was Thursday. Goodwill stores in this area offer a color code discount each day of the week, according to what color the price tag is. Additionally, Tuesday is senior discount day, and Thursday is First Responder/Military discount day.
My walk-out price for the dress was U.S. $3.00, a fantastic price, considering most dresses in Torrid stores run a considerable amount higher.
I went to a charity shop on Monday and they have a $2 rack every Monday. I saw a lovely summer dress and thought for $2 take a risk. I bought it and about 3 other tops. So for my $8 I got a top that didn't fit me. Two reasonable tops you could wear casually and the summer dress. I put it on and nearly fell over. It is one of the best things I have ever bought. It's not often I buy something and when I first put it on I go that really suits me. I now had a problem. I just love how it looks on me but where do I wear it. I think it is too formal for shopping but I'm not sure or maybe I could wear it to get a coffee from a coffee shop but not sure about that either. So what could I do with this dress ? Then I got an idea. On Tuesday I took a picture of me in the dress and posted it here on CDH. I named the picture "Where Could I Wear This Dress" and got some suggestions from some of you lovely ladies. Yes I was right, it is too formal for shopping but no reason I can't wear it on a sunny day to nowhere in particular. And if I ever get the chance to go anywhere more formal I'm set. And all for just $2
Recent best buy- I was out with a GG friend who I meet every week. We went to a local town to have lunch and a browse. There are clothes shops and quite a few charity shops. I have no reason to buy any more things as I have too much already. We were in Romans and looking at the clothes and my friend called me over to the sale rail,'This is so you' A black and white patterned A line tunic dress with 3/4 sleeves reduced 50%. I saw it reasoned with myself, quite reasonably I might add,and then in a flash all reason left me and it was purchased.
I have these phases when I buy quite a bit then it subsides and reason returns. Then a couple of days later...
The way I see it is that spending most of my life unable to shop and have a wardrobe of nice things I am making up for lost time.
I think my own recent 'best buy' must be the pair of thigh boots I bought from Vinted for £5.
I saw them for sale and they looked pretty good - black, size 9(UK), 4" stiletto heels, and thigh length - and for £5 I decided that I'd risk them not being the right size - I've bought and returned so many pairs of boots because they are too small, too tight or too baggy in the leg.
Imagine my surprise and delight when they arrived and I first pulled them up my leg and my foot slid easily and comfortably into place! 😀
They're still a little loose around my legs, but not too bad - they look good when worn. And as I say, for £5, I'm not complaining.
I think my best value buy was a gorgeous Boden skirt in as new condition. It was sitting there in a charity shop shouting buy me. It was from their current range priced at €75 . Mine for a mere €4 .When I showed my wife she thought I'd been blowing money in the designer shops 🤣
