This is a general life issue. I get multiple calls everyday from Voice Over Internet ( VOIP) services who "spoof" a local number to fool me into answering. Usually these promise lower interest rates on my credit cards and try to trick me into disclosing my credit card information. These callers make me sick. They prey on the weak, aged, and gullible.
Recently I decided to look into doing something about it The question is, can VOIP calls be traced. I have just begun this investigation and will share what I know and discover. I invite anyone interested to contribute and comment.
"VoIP calls are the trend now. They make communication easier by allowing you to make phone calls over the internet. With VoIP calls, you can make phone calls to anyone in the world provided there is an internet connection for all parties. VoIP calls also allow for conference calls and VoIP meetings too. It is now common to see that business organizations have implemented using VoIP calls in their communication process. It helps them bypass the charges of phone companies, provides unlimited phone lines and makes communication easier, cheaper and faster.
A recent concern when utilizing VoIP calls is tracing an unidentified phone number to its owner when VoIP calls are made. When unidentified callers make a call through to you on VoIP, you only get to see the caller ID, which is the number you see on your phone. The issue is now tracing the number to the owner.
Thankfully, there are different ways to trace the owner of a number when a VoIP call comes through.
Reverse Phone Detective
The reverse phone detective method utilizes different online apps to trace the owner registered to the phone line. There are numerous reverse phone detectives available online. They are free and require you to input the caller ID in the search engine and they help produce the owner in an instant. In fact, these online detectives can be used to search for landline numbers too.

If it makes you feel better, search Youtube for "Scammer Revolts". This guy gets such calls, then while recording the video of a scammer trying to remote connect to his computer, he turns the tide and pretty much scams the scammers. Be prepared for foul language from those scammed scammers at the end of those videos....if you can make it that far without bursting your lungs from laughing so hard.
Check out NoMoRoBo if you want an effective way to cut the calls down dramatically. Or turn it into a game by seeing how much of their time you can waste without giving out any personal information.
My "favorite" has to be T"IRS will be taking legal action against you and you will be arrested next week". Once the caller ID was MY NUMBER. I told the caller "wow you are really slick. Caller ID says you are calling me from my phone which is in my hand ! How are you doing that ?" He hung up.
AT&T told me they can't (won't) and I would have to file reports with the FCC and the FTC. I just haven't been that motivated.
I was getting a dozen or more of those maddening calls every day. So I set my phone to the do not disturb mode, and then I set it to allow calls from my contact list to get through. Problem solved! If you want to speak to me and you are not on my contact list, you'll have to leave a message and I will call you back.
Hi Girls! I agree with you all......I used to be plolite on the phone.....ma trained me so.
Now if I don't recognized a number....I don't answer. Or if I do.....my first word is a resounding.....NO!

I have nomorobo but still get Voip spoof number calls
Only "legal action" call I have ever gotten with the threat of throwing me in jail I asked "So do you even know my address? Do you even know my name?"
I once had a call saying that my Windows 10 was about to expire. I asked "how can something I did not yet register expire?"
At the time, I did not have an activated Windows 10. Now I do.
My uncle once had a job as a clown when he was younger. He loves when those people call because he spends a lot of time on the phone messing with them.
Some carriers are now using their own filtering system to block phone spam. But ignoring numbers you don't recognize is the only sure way to avoid them, at present. Today, I got a call from 136 area code, which is in China.
I once had a call with a Chinese accent that appeared on caller ID with my own area code and 3 digit prefix to tell me about suspicious activity in my Bank of America account.
"Oh no! I can't believe it! Someone broke into my Bank of America account! What do I do? What do I do l?" .......no that was not my reaction, just something I made up. I don't even have a Bank of America account.
