Silicon breast forms—what's in them?

Just a quick question.

People have said that occasionally their silicone forms split and they repair them with tape. I haven't had this happen so far, but I do wonder what's in the middle of them. If I cut one in half, would I see the same texture all the way through or is there something different inside?

@rebeccabaxter No idea, put my smaller forms are transparent - the larger ones are opaque.

Well, you asked, so here goes 🙂

*Puts on Chemistry hat*

Silicone (as distinct from silicon, Si, the element) is a man-made polymer made up of silicon, oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen. These types of polymers are also called 'siloxanes'.

Silicones can be created in liquid, resins, or flexible rubber-like varieties. It's the last of these that's in breast forms and implants.

To make silicone, pure silica (silicon dioxide, or SiO2) is put into a furnace at a high temperature to drive the oxygen out (carbon is added, which reacts with the oxygen to produce CO2) leaving pure silicon behind. This is then powdered, combined with methyl chloride and heated once again to make the silicone.

The outer coating on a breast form is usually either Nylon or Spandex.

If you cut one open it will be the same texture all the way through.

If it's gritty rather than gooey that means it's starting to break down, and some of the silicone is essentially turning back into silicon dioxide (sand!). That will happen over time in the cheaper varieties used in breast forms, but not in the medical-grade silicone used in implants which has a far higher purity and is more stable.

It's the medical-grade silicone which has a QCB of 11.

QCB??  No matter.  I don't need breast forms anyway....

QCB as a technical term originated in Scarlet Laboratories (ScarLab) in Baltimore, and stands for Quasi-Cake Batterish.

Here's the original reference:

@ellyd22 Based on this information my mind has run amok with possibilities. For example, if my smaller breast forms start to go sandy, can I grow plants in them? They might need added nutrients to be successful, so should I inject them with MiracleGro? But if I did that, would it have the added benefit of increasing them from size C to a D or DD or E? What would you recommend I grow in them anyway?

Thankfully I never had puncture problems with my original breast forms (water filled balloons).

You might try injecting them with bioluminescent algae so they glow in the dark.

bioluminescent algae

I love that idea. Just googled it to see what I could achieve and came across "petjellyfish dot co dot uk". Presumably breast forms are the near perfect shape for creating glowing jellyfish.

If you had a way of keeping them sufficiently moist and  could come up with a way of avoiding the stings, there's nothing to stop you using jellyfish in your bra instead of breastforms. It would certainly be cheaper, though you'd probably need to use fresh ones every few hours.

I might need to give this a little further thought before I present the idea on Dragon's Den.

@ellyd22 Versatile stuff, isn't it. I use silicon grease to protect the gaskets on my aquarium seals; yes, I actually keep seals in my aquarium (thought I'd get that one in before you 😀)

Silicones can be created in liquid, resins, or flexible rubber-like varieties. It's the last of these that's in breast forms and implants.

Before silicone, a bunch of different materials were used as implants, including paraffin wax (Japanese prostitutes) goat’s milk, and beads.

In 1964, Carol Doda started the topless dancing craze after she got liquid silicone injections. Because of migration of the material, these were soon outlawed.

What is being worked on now is body fat injections.

And just as a cautionary reminder to us butt-challenged males, silicone butt implants are the most deadly of these procedures. Don't go there.

Carol is also known for wearing Rudi Gernreich's monokini. That would have been an interesting profile to see. Yesterday, I eyed a modern version of that - a suspender dress in something like a tame goth store. I'd love to have one!

@ellyd22 well that’s easy for you to say smarty pants.  lol. But, how do they get the caramel inside every Cadbury Caramilk bar?

@ellyd22 years ago Cadbury ran commercials on tv about how to get the soft runny caramel into the chocolate of the candy bars.

It would be extraordinarily easy to get soft runny caramel into a Caramel Bra.

Getting it out again would be an entirely different matter.

@rebeccabaxter If they are like mine they would be an outer shell filled with medical grade silicone. It will be uniform throughout the form. It's a very sticky gel substance. The shell is not very thick but it is fairly strong. Of course if it's abused it will rupture, as it does occasionally in implants.

It's something like Jello but denser and very sticky. It's difficult to wipe off things as it clings very well. It has a good density which makes it perfect for breast forms and it moves under compression which gives it the "feel" we love.

You can use tape to cover a rupture but eventually it will spread. Sadly I've had that happen for various reasons, all my fault.

@rebeccabaxter I had a small hole and did just patch it with duct tape. What little did come out was sort of...grittily gooey? Like quasi-cake batterish? But a bit thicker?

Hope that wasn't too scientific an explanation for you 😉

@melodeescarlet I believe there is an SI unit called the Quasi-Cake-Batterish, or QCB for short. Foam forms have a QCB of 1 and top end silicon forms have QCB 10. There used to be a spoof rock band called Spinal Tap who perhaps wrote a song about a form with QCB of 11, but opinion is divided on this.

Oh gosh we have a bunch of scientists here. It's beyond me and with growing things or  keeping seals I wonder if I need to replace my bra with plant pots or goldfish bowls....

So would the bit between the breasts be called Silicone Valley.....

@ab123

If you get the water salinity right (35 parts per thousand, i,e, 3.5% NaCl) then you could have a transparent sealed bra in which you could keep small tropical fish. Your body heat may even provide sufficient warmth to sustain coral growth.

It would provide a welcome talking point if you were out and about en femme in a social situation and the conversation was beginning to lag.

Oh I thought that they were made of sugar and spice and everything nice?   (I like my suggested synthesis of the ingredients better but that will probably just get me a fruitcake and not a passing grade in Organic). lol Marg

Two Blueberry Muffins might make a good bra filling, and also provide a tasty snack while you're out and about.

@ellyd22   You do that too?  Well, I only do one on the right side (it's my smaller side) and then put some packets of white frosting on the left side.  So then, when you're having a winter cuppa your bun is nicely heated and the warm frosting has perfect viscosity and flows easily for a great presentation....it sort of has a mum's touch....and what's more, you don't have to go to the gym to work off a second bun....that would now be in your oven?.  (have we all gone daft?...watched too much British Baking Show?.....or perhaps got the wrong mushrooms at the village market?).  lol  So now I have to be lucid again and go out and plow snow.  TTYL Marg

I'm with Marg... They give me a feeling of contentment and "belonging" that when I wear them I get as close to being the "other me" as I can be.

Like right now for instance. "The Boss" is out for the day, so I'm Caty as much as I can be, the only thing missing is make up. Cos I dont have time to put it on and take it of.

Caty.

PS I have an old pair that leak like a sieve. Taped around every edge and splits on the inside wall. Very.. expensive, but worth it. Will have to Juggle/jiggle  some funds, (as well as them when I take off my bra soon!!!) to get some new ones. The oldies will end up with a CD friendly costume hire place that helps disadvantaged folk.

Caty.

It's my wig that does that for me, it's that that really changes my appearance and makes me feel I am Becca.

All foolishness aside.  Caty mentioned leaking forms and yes, some forms are too expensive or too precious to not attempt a repair.  So here's what I've done with costume forms that need a semi-permanent repair.  I just take an old nylon stocking or pantyhose and cut a repair patch out of them that can fit over the rip in the form.  Then I spread a thin layer of industrial silicone caulk over the patch and then smooth it over the rip.  If done carefully you can stop the leak and extend the life of the form.  Sometimes I added a second layer on really big rips but you have to be careful or the form will get too stiff in that spot and not flow or bounce naturally.  I hope that is some useful info.  Marg

@margprodue I did similar but with plastic from a plastic bag. I’ve since changed to Invicta and all is bouncily squidgily sleep-in safe! And cheaper than the ones which split. 🤓

I feel fully informed as to the contents of silicone breast forms now but it brings up another subject, which is how does one dispose of an old pair, they don't seem very environmentally friendly. I get the impression that, like plastic, artificial breast forms don't decompose in landfill. Of course, compared to the amount of plastic in the environment, a few pairs of fake tits from a small number of cross-dressers is hardly going to poison the world. 😀
