At this time of year I usually review what clothes I have accumulated and decide which ones to keep.

I usually keep my favourite items, however my general rules to keep something are:

  • do I look good in it
  • is it comfortable to wear
  • does it fit me properly
  • have I worn it over the last year or so ..

if an item passes the checks it stays .. otherwise it goes into a bag to be donated to charity. Mind you there is always that one item or two that you want to keep ‘just because’.   So far I have a few items to go, perhaps with a bit more thought there may be a couple more before I take the bag of clothes to the local charity shop.

Do you have a regular clearout of clothes you no longer want ? or do you just keep everything 🙂

Hi Alicen

Since I've been single for the last 16 years I'm in the fortunate position of never having to purge.

However, I DO have regular clearouts ... principally to make space for new stuff.

My criteria for keeping things (or not) are pretty much the same as yours.

Since I came out to my Mum and sister I've had lots of help and advice about putting outfits together (almost entirely from my sister, who is DELIGHTED to have a 'new sister' to go shopping with). That prompted a major review of my overall wardrobe. All unwanted items, as in your case, went to charity shops.

Local crossdressers shopping in my nearest town must have wondered quite why there was a sudden influx of clothes and shoes in their sizes. However, I'm sure that they welcomed the unexpected bonanza 🙂

The items that pass all of the tests tend to get worn up until (or even beyond) the point of total disintegration.

Hi Alicen,

I have my clothes stored in a number of plastic tubs in the loft.

As they were reaching capacity around Christmas, I decided to have a clear out of stuff that I hadn’t worn in quite a while that I probably wouldn’t wear again. That’s gone well and I did make some space, although I’ve now filled it with newer stuff that I will definitely wear.

So in my case it’s been more of a refresh than a clear out.

Some time ago I ran a thread about closet and wardrobe sizes, and the consequences of running out of space.  Not surprisingly, responses were all over the place.  I don't remember where on the spectrum I fell.  But I do remember that at the time, I still kept a significant drab wardrobe.  That problem has now been solved and I have plenty of rack space. I haven't had to weed thru my fab wardrobe in some time.  Instead, I'm finding some things I'd forgotten about that have a new lease on life!

we have both just done this, sent bags upon bags of stuff to charity and don't actually seem to have generated any space.

I do have the occasional stock take. I follow a similar pattern and go through everything and put aside that which I feel should go. More often than not it goes back as it may not have been worn for ages but there is that attachment to it and it might be worn. I did have a purge and a friend of mine is the same size as me and she gratefully took then from me. A lot of my excess goes into a holding area, that is the loft. The intention is to sell or charity shop., so far the boxes have grown not decreased. I have a philosophy of one in one out that hasn't quite worked either.

I love my clothes and they love me.

Although I have exclusive use of one bedroom in our home for my crossdressing activities, I still sort through all my clothing items every 60 to 90 days.  I don't want things to accumulate that I have not worn in a long time or will never wear again.

The bedroom includes a large walk-in closet, and I have several dressers in the room.  Additionally, my wife and I store clothing and shoes in our finished basement.  Those portable garment racks on wheels are very useful and convenient.  Petticoats and winter coats in particular are stored downstairs, as they take up a larger amount of room.  My wife and I both seem to have way too many pairs of shoes.

Nevertheless, about every 60 to 90 days I conduct an intense sorting job and then cart everything to Goodwill.

I have several stages of managing my wardrobe:

a. Things I wear

b. Things I would like to wear but don’t (too small, too not age appropriate, too sexy, worn out, …)

c. Things I can’t wear but don’t want to loose them (these are in the attic)

d. Things for friends (obviously this cannot be shoes, all out her clothing could conceivably be my wife’s)

e. Things for charity.

it can take several years to go from a to e.

We also have a policy of nothing new in unless something(s) of equal weight or volume goes out.  I got a lot of credit when I got rid of a car!

Hugs

I went through my closets and found my bag had only three items in it. Damn I guess I will have to do another rerun now. It is just so hard to let loose of things.I am determined to though to let go of clothing that's now too tight

Unfortunately I had a purge about six months ago which I'm now regretting, I got rid of some breast forms and underwear and general clothes that I hadn't worn or used in ages however I've recently lost some weight and those items would've been very useful now. So a cautionary note, think twice and then think again before you purge.
