Drinks with artificial sweeteners have been found to increase food craving and appetites in obese people and women too. US researchers examined sweeteners on 74 men and women who were obese, over weight or just healthy. Test over three days on those involved were given a 300ml drink, one just water, one sweetened with sugar, and one with a sweetener called sucralose. After two hour each individual had a blood test and MRI scan while being shown pictures of burgers, sweets and doughnuts, then offered unlimited access to a buffet. Women and obese people had more activity in the brain regions responsible for cravings and appetites after eating sweeteners than real sugar. After the sweetener drinks all groups had a decrease in the hormones that tell the body I feel full. This suggests that artificial sweeteners may not be effective in suppressing hunger in certain circumstances.

Thanks Amanda for sharing this.
I decided to give up soft drinks altogether as part of my type two diabetes.
All I drink these days is mineral water.
Love and hugs, Stephanie 💖

Hi Amanda,

I believe other studies show using artificial sweeteners  leads to weight gain as you cite and a craving for a higher caloric intake.

Amanda....

I hardly touch soft drinks...but when I do, I prefer fruit squash, Sweeteners are cropping up in everything now. If the end result is that they leave you wanting more...what a perfect result for the big companies....diet coke anyone????

I once made a spongecake using sweetener instead of sugar....but never again, it was revolting!!!!

Sweet enough, grace x

Regular drinks have "high fructose corn syrup," so I think they're almost as bad.

I like Diet Coke in rum, but that's my only soft drink these days. I drink strong black tea, no sugar, and take a black Americano in coffee. No sugar on my plain breakfast cereal. Maybe a drop of local honey in my weekly mug of rooibos.

Then I can eat chocolate.

Years ago the hospital recommended to me that I stay away from sugary items like pop/candy.  As for sweetening coffee, they suggested I use splenda/stevia.  One of the reasons is my meds will increase the glucose in my blood, so if i use plain sugar, it will elevate it to the point of border line diabetic.

Since them, I've used splenda, drank diet pop, and tryed to limit my sugar intake.
