If you underdress with tights or stockings to go out, do you wear male socks over them so that nobody would spot anything if they inadvertently saw your ankles, or do you go bare and don't care?

I seem to have fallen into the habit of, if going out alone and i want to underdress i will wear a thong  and tights, under my trousers but no socks and then glow from the frissante of risque. But if i'm going out with friends I wear socks so that there is little chance of them seeing anything but this kills the feeling of naturalness somehow. ( although I still love the feel of the tights)

I tend to underdress when going to concerts, or on special occasions

Also, from reading posts on here, some ladies underdress with bras - wow - how do you manage to hide the fact you are wearing a bra? surely the outline, even of a sports bra, would be visible through your shirt/top? I'm really keen to do this but very nervous about discovery haha

@sallybchester

I'm trans and don't care.  There is no underdress.  I wear my clothes.  People see me.  So what?  If someone doesn't like what I'm wearing it's a reflection on them.  That's never happened BTW.

@lizk Liz that’s all well and good and I’m very happy for you but not all gurls here at Crossdresser Heaven have that ability for various reasons.  Your reply had very little to do with Sally’s question.

Hi, Sally:

I have never worn socks over my stockings because most of them are black and are dark enough to not draw attention the way skin-tone stockings would.

Having said that, I had to take my shoes off, once, when visiting our daughter. Uh, that was a close call!

How does this work without detection? Practice being a magician. If you want to expand your dressing style and do more, you have to experiment. Some experiments fail. Be prepared for both learning from your successes (going undetected) and learning from when you get clocked. What worked? What failed?

Basically, it is a skill that needs to be developed because what you are doing is using obfuscation and creating an illusion. Be serious about what you want to do because of your risk of being discovered and check a mirror in good lighting.

For example, to not have print-through, you need non-transparent materials. A fall sweater with a knit pattern, a thick enough cloth with a masking pattern, don't tuck your shirt tail into your waistband. Snug tops in plain colours will highlight your shape. They will probably outline your bra, too.

Also, while you can still crossdress with appropriate women's fashions, you don't have to wear obviously women's clothing. If you do, it will be like shining a spotlight on what you are doing. This is how you can dress more often but have few people recognise what you are doing.

Are you wearing pretty dresses and 3" heels? No, but you are still crossdressing. How far do you want to go? How far can you go?

If you crossdress subtly and androgynously, you might be surprised with what you can do to disguise what you are doing. The way I view it is if the most that I do is make someone passing by me make them ask, "What did I just see?", then I was a success.

Learn from your mistakes : a few days ago, I had to dress quickly, to go out with my wife. She said, "If you are going to wear that, I will go alone".

I had put on a new, snug, solid coloured top and I didn't check a mirror. Oops!😳

@sallybchester hi, yes I do this too.  I regularly wear sheer tan or nude tights and silky undies under my work trousers - I love the feeling!! But I do wear socks to prevent being spotted.  I often drive to work without shoes and socks on, just the feeling of tights is amazing, then put my socks and shoes on when I arrive.

However, in winter, I might wear 100 denier black opaque tights, which would look like black socks unless someone was literally inspecting you feet and ankles… so you could try that?

i might not wear socks if say I had jeans on and just walking around the shops for instance, as my ankles wouldn’t be seen so easily, and if they were it would be just by strangers so who cares!

Enjoy underdressing, great to know there are like minded advocates of tights out there!

Warm wishes

Jenny x

@sallybchester I wear pantyhose basically 24/7, unless I wear shorts or go swimming. I do wear socks over them, mainly for comfort, not to conceal anything. My concern has more to do with the waistband showing when I reach for something or have to lean over and someone else is around.

@sallybchester if you call wearing pantyhose under my Gloria Vanderbilt jeans with a pair of Keds on, and a tunic, then yes I underdress. My earrings, long hair, and purse might be the give away though. LOL Be well.

@sallybchester I absolutely love underdressing but now it’s just kinda the norm for me. I wear panties and bralette daily and I add pantyhose and a camisole in the cooler months. I never wear socks over my pantyhose as I almost want people to see I’m wearing them under my jeans. I don’t feel right if I don’t have a pair of pantyhose under my jeans especially my woman’s jeans. Which I wear out a lot for just over a year now.

@sallybchester in the summer I do not care if my leggings leave my ankles exposed. In winter I wear socks over them. Camisoles can easily be hidden under a darker colored shirt, sweater etc. A bra with small forms can be hidden under a bulky sweater or a loose vest. Practice is the key. Believe me I have 50 years of experience.

I had my first really bra fitting about five years ago. I found a reputable, locally owned business and I knew that I wanted to be able to underdress and that I would not be wearing forms for I needed to be in male mode.

I went to the store in the morning hours when I thought they would be less busy.  They were not busy but they were not empty either.  I was greeted by a sales associate the moment I walked in - she introduced herself and asked how she could help me.  I introduced myself and said something along the lines of "I am looking for a couple of bras to start a wardrobe and I have no idea what size I would need.  Is that something you can help me with?"

She replied, "Are these for you?"  I answered in the affirmative and she asked if I would like a fitting.  I said that if she was comfortable with that then I was.  I was perfectly prepared to turn around and leave if she was not.

She immediately took me to a dressing room - she did measurements and I left with three bras.  But she was also very helpful in coming up with solutions to ensure maximum stealth.  After all many women don't want their bras to be seen either.  It's just and expectation they are wearing one.

So these were the things she taught me -

1.  Well fitting bra - a well fitting bra is easier to mask.

2. Dark colors and patterns - there are I am guessing a lot of us hear who have very limited to non-existent chances to fully dress.  This is a place to come and talk about when have or what we would like to do.  If you run into me though in real life I am mostly like to be dressed like I am in an LL Bean catalog - but with a bra and panties on underneath.

3. Layers - I can wear a white t-shirt and white dress shirt over a neutral colored bra and it will be almost undetectable unless it is really hot and I start to sweat - I prefer my dress shirts that are a little boxier anyway so there is not close fit.

4. Finally social expectation - (a) people are generally not looking for other people's undergarments; (b) people are not expecting a man to be wearing a bra; (c) people see what they expect to see so even if they see a bump on the strap or something they really aren't going to immediately go to "bra;" (d) the likelihood of them saying something is limited unless they know you or have a specific issue.

I think I was made once - and but no one said anything.

Do what you are comfortable with but don't overthink it either.

ETA: When making purchases also consider color - what you like v what is easier to mask - if you are just wearing a shirt/blouse - skin tone is key. The hardest color to hide is going to be white.

@sallybchester Today (Sunday 9/1) will be my first day-- I'm trying out some Spanx footed tights that I bought for this very purpose.  I've been waiting all week knowing the weather was going to cool off today!  Hmm... I think a black Fantasie thong would be a nice touch to go with it.

I underdress to some degree almost always. Sometimes it's just knickers, but usually I wear tights as well, and as often as not a bra (sometimes I'll wear a body or panty-corselette) , tops and sweaters along with women's jeans.

I tend to wear socks if I am wearing tights with a denier rating of 20 or less, simply to stop the tights getting damaged. I usually wear Dr Martens or Converse boots though which don't often show much nylon (unless I'm not wearing my tall girl jeans of course!).

I absolutely see where you're coming from , Sally. I might have posted the same query a while  back.Yet here I am, stopping over at friends and I'll be wearing a soft padded bra and clothes I bought in the women's section when we go out.

Just try to let it be and see what happens.

If I'm wearing sheer or semi-sheer stockings or pantyhose, I will usually wear socks over them. But I usually do this when I'm planning to go out later anyway.

When I do it in the wintertime, I will wear (opaque winter) tights as "extra long" socks. It's a little smoother than socks, but no one is really going to be looking at my ankles in case my pant leg raises a bit to see that I'm wearing tights and not socks.

I have done both, but these days I just wear my sheer stockings. Nobody notices or cares, and if they do....so what? My wife doesn't complain, so I no longer worry about it. We often go to the synphony as a date night and wearing nice lingerie is part of that for both of us, and that includings sheer stockings. I especially enjoy wearing a suit with a nice, matching lingerie set.

I've only underdressed in tights a small handful of times, and I've worn socks to hide the fact that I am wearing tights.

Most times when underdressed it is usually panties or during winter months (thanks to heavy parkas) a one piece swimsuit to hide the straps.

Hi Sally, I under and stealth dress almost everyday. For me everything depends on the situation of the day. I prefer to not wear socks over my pantyhose or tights. I’m pretty sure like me you feel that wearing socks takes away from the joy of wearing legging of some sort. But there are situations where I just have to wear socks. I’ve realized that most people in passing don’t notice what I’m wearing. Today I’m wearing women’s khaki shorts with women’s polo. There are telltale signs they’re women’s clothes but you would have to look close. Most people aren’t looking at your feet. But if I was in a situation where people could clearly view my feet and ankles I would wear socks. I wish that weren’t the case but in my life that’s just the way it is.

It all depends on when, where and what I will be doing. Higher-denier tights (or stockings) worn under trousers will not attract any attention in normal outdoor wear - including on buses, trains, etc.  However, I would be more cautious if visting friends or in an environment where my feet and ankles would be more visible.  On the other hand, another way to look at is that wearing socks over the tights or stockings allows them to be sheer - and sheer hosiery is so pleasant to wear!

As some have said, wearing a bra (though without forms) causes no problems when out and about and with a jumper and/or an outer jacket or coat.  You don't normally take off such clothes in shops, on buses, trains, etc. so nobody is going sto see straps or bra lines.

Likewise a panty girdle is unlikely to be detected under looser-fitting trousers and, in winter when wearing a waterproof jacket that covers my hips, even an open girdle or suspender belt with stockings will not be detectable in most out-and-about situations.  Of course, you have to think carefully sometimes - such as going into a pub or restaurant where you would expect to take off at least the coat or waterproof but even then I don't think the underwear (even quite substantial items) have been noticeable under trousers (though tight jeans would be rather different!)

I wear knickers most of the time. If I'm wearing tight whilst out it means I've got a dress one. I'll just slip a pair of trousers on to get past the neighbours.

I do possess a pair of yellow Doc Martens. Not sure if they count as drab, underdressed or femme.

I wear knickers every day. Have not found any of my outfits allow anything to show (although i now appreciate that high waisted knickers under low waisted jeans was not a good look). I wear knee high stockings (skin tone and low denier) with most outfits instead of socks. Gives my ankle a little colour. Don't think anyone has noticed. I have not tried a bra yet (being summer it would be fairly obvious, I did try a camisole and that worked well). Saoirse gave some great advice above on getting fitted. Will have to give that a whirl.
