Hi girls. I had the telly on tonight. Midsomer Murders was on. It's a quintessentially English series set in a sleepy UK town where Inspector Barnaby solves murders. There seems to be a murder, or two, most weeks in Midsomer. I'm sure if I lived there I'd be considering moving out. It doesn't sound safe there 😂. It's just the most English, orthodox program. Imagine my surprise when the community under investigation turned out to be crossdressers and drag queens! I had my daughters and new grandson round for dinner and they were paying no attention at all. I couldn't catch much of the drift of the story, not for the lack of trying, so I can't tell you how the topic was handled, but I was just shocked at the British TV establishment going down this road. The episode was called 'Dressed to kill' if you're interested. Some lovely makeup though 😂xx.

Hi, Chrissie.

My wife and I watched it last night, without distractions, and I think it was handled reasonably well. The focus was more on the drag acts, one of whom was a crossdressing electrician who lived in the village. They touched on acceptance at home but not outside. This was not the wife in this case, but the daughter. She thought her mum had left because of her dad's crossdressing but he told her that it was for another man.

I suspect the programme's writer may be, or know, a crossdresser and took the opportunity to introduce the theme.

I should add that the daughter, when she saw her dad perform, was proud of him.

I watched it too 🙂

*The rest of this post contains spoilers. Look away now if you intend to watch the programme yourself*

One thing I liked is that all of the drag performers, and the crossdressing electrician, were portrayed as the good guys.

They all had a tremendous level of acceptance in the local area, and a couple of the many subplots ended up with two locals (the physio and the mother of the failed actor) under arrest as a direct result of their prejudice against the community.

I started watching it thinking 'I bet a CD ends up being the villain' ... but ended up being pleasantly surprised!

Yes, that came through very clearly, it was a really positive spin on the subject.

Little by little...😊.

We have Midsomer Murders on record, so will check that out.

Your comment about moving away if you lived there reminded me of the story of when the original Barnaby (John Nettles) received his OBE. Apparently Queen Elizabeth was quite a fan of the show and told him she didn’t fancy living there as it was far too dangerous

@chrisfp99 I love that show! There’s 2O plus seasons I believe. I know I’ve seen at least a couple with drag references. I always thought the English led the way for drag references in media😊

@chrisfp99 I'm surprised that anyone still lives in Midsomer. My wife likes the programme, I can't bear it so leave her to it.

Hugs,

Anna xx

@chrisfp99 Midsomer Murders that shows been going on for so long they must have murdered everyone in Midsomer by now surely LOL. As you say certainly unexpected for a mainstream British TV show to feature crossdressers and drag queens. But again drag seems to be featuring more on prime time British TV, I remember when Ru Paul's drag race was only on late at night on MTV (which you could only watch if you had Sky in the UK at one time) but is now on the BBC at primetime and you have drag queens doing adverts etc.. So is drag becoming a more mainstream entertainment form as a result.

@shawndyglitterfiend Showing your age Shawndy! Benny Hill was a bit bawdy for me. Loved some of Monty Python. My favourites were Blackadder, Yes Minister and Porridge xx.

@erinb You might be able to get access if you use a VPN but ITV (in the UK) are, annoyingly, pretty good at sussing out VPN access. I use Google Chrome to access the site (after turning off my VPN) as it has nothing added to it—no adblockers, malware stoppers, nothing. If I use any of my other browsers it just pushes me out with one error message or another.

No worries, Erin, I'm from a computer background and sometimes just assume everyone know what I'm talking about.

@erinb I believe that PBS carried the show.  You may be able to get it through the PBS App.

@erinb If you stream your TV, it's on a number of channels through a Roku device. My limited, quick search just now, show the show available through the Roku Channel, Hoopla, and Tubi channel.

My wife is addicted (she's Irish but loves it) and I usually watch with her viewing one episode a night.  We haven't seen this episode but will be sure to look for it now.  Thanks Chrissie.  It sounds interesting.  Unfortunately after watching at night I can't get the theme music out of my brain for an entire day.  Marg

Don’t you just hate it Chrissie when there is a crossdressing discussion, tv show or something else having to do with our unorthodox habit, and people interrupt you.  But the worst part is that we can’t tell them that it’s something we want to see, because we’re crossdressers.

@jennconn Yes Jennifer, I felt decidedly odd. Although secretly I was glad I wasn't able to take in the finer details as that meant I didn't need to pass any judgement on the show. Some of the other girls have done that, for which I thank them xx.

I've seen MM a number of times and prefer the new ones (with Neil Dudgeon) to the older ones. I also like the newer ones for another reason.

I was watching one night and saw Barnaby's wife Sarah and thought that she was a very attractive woman. I didn't know who she was so when the credits rolled at the end I looked for her name, Fiona Dolman.

I had been searching for some time for a replacement name to use instead of Dianne that I had used for a while. As soon as I saw the name Fiona it jumped out at me as the name I wanted and I've been using it ever since. And I love it. So thanks to MM and Fiona Dolman!
